When are you planning to have babies?

Hi Ladies,

It's Friday and I thought we could have a little poll... now that we are actually all married and stuff :)

So, when are you planning to have babies? Are both you and DH on the same page about this?

For me: I turned 30 a month before our wedding, and I would like to be pregnant when I turn 32.  DH likes the idea, because that means, there are additional 9 months without the baby out (initially I wanted to have a baby before 32).

Re: When are you planning to have babies?

  • I said 2-5 years, I'm thinking sometime after 30 (I'm 27 and will be 28 in March).
  • I said 2-5 years, but it may be longer. I just turned 22 and DH is almost 24. I still need to finish school and DH is going back to get his masters in a few years. I want to be settled down before we start have kids. Cause ideally I would like to take a couple years off so we don't have to send them to daycare.

Me and DH are mostly on the same page. I think when the time is right we will both know.

  • I said after 1st anniversary...we aren't really sure yet..and originally anticipated 2+ years...however, I've been doing really good paying my student loans down...so it's really just a financial thing...so probably eliminate the BCP's around the 1-1.5 year anniversary

I'm 24, DH is 28...we're in no rush or anything..but both have stable jobs, a house, etc... so once the debt is paid down-we're good to go.  i work in labor/delivery so at least i get my baby fix there!

  • I said after our first anniversary however we actually hope to get pregnant next August exactly (in a perfect world).  I am a teacher and would ideally like to deliver around the end of the school year.  DH will graduate from nursing school in December.  I am already 31 and DH is 29.  I have owned a home for 9 years that is the perfect size for the family we want and we don't have alot of debt so we feel pretty ready.  And I have baby fever like crazy!  I teach kindergarten and it just makes the baby fever worse!
  • I'll be 30 in Jan and dh will be 33 in Nov. Our "baby" is 10. We go back and forth with whether or not we will have more. I have baby fever like crazy. Ideally we would start around the 1 yr anniversary mark.

I graduate in Dec from nursing school as well!!

  • We want to start trying in the spring.  I just turned 32, and H will be 32 in March.  We both have baby fever, but I have it worse.  I can't wait!  Unfortunately we don't have insurance figured out yet, or I would start now. Neither of us gets it through work, so we're pricing out our options now, and talking to a broker to make sure our policy has everything we need and would be valid for maternity before we start trying.

  • Interesting poll, since I just bought my first pregnancy book tonight :)

DH and I won't be starting for a year or more, but we are really into planning, and neither of us know anything about babies.  I have a precious friend that just gave birth on Wednesday and she has been a sort of 'pre-pregnancy mentor'.  I told her DH and I were wanting to begin learning about pregnancy and she reccommended a book to me.

  • @louieblue - I think DH would die of a heart attack if I brought home a book about pregnancy, but can you share what that book is?

I love the answers to this post. We August ladies rock :)

Congrats!  It is a huge step for my DH.  It took him awhile to figure out what he wanted to be when he grew up.  I am constantly amazed at what a good nurse he is!

  • We are trying now.  Both of us have know that we wanted to start a family right away.  Having children is something that is very important to both of us.  Plus things are starting to settle into place for us, we've been through a lot over the 8 1/2 years we've been together, and we're finally getting to the place where we've worked so hard to get to (school, work, etc).  We just feel like it's right for us :-)  I can't wait!

  • We started trying on our wedding night and did so until recently. It's way to stressful with people always asking, and then offering up their advice (when you haven't asked for it), so DH and I discussed it and we have decided to hold off until the spring.  I really want to lose some weight and be healthier before getting pregnant, so this gives me 6 months to do so.

With DH back in school, we were thinking that at least by then, he'll be finished his first year and well into his second year when the baby comes (if we are so blessed).

It was a bit heartbreaking when I found out that another one of my students is expecting...unexpectedly and unplanned of course.

I think it is really important and good that you are thinking about your health first. One of my BMs was planning on having a baby this summer, and she got pregnant but lost the baby in 8th week. Her doctor said that she had really bad blood results, she needed to lose some weight, work on her circulation, and take at least 6 months off the pill. She was so ready to have this baby, but her body was not.  When your body is ready, you will get pregnant. And all of us will keep sending you knottie vibes when that happens :)

  • We're going to start trying around May-ish 2012. That way we have two years of just being a married couple before we bring another person into the fold. I have baby fever like crazy, but I know for our relationship, and our finances it's just better if we wait. My parents are dying for a grandbaby too

  •  I've never wanted to have kids before I was 32 (I have no idea why this idea popped into my head when I was 18, but it's what I've always thought).  When I turn 32, DH and I will have been together for 5 years, married for 2, and it really does seem like the perfect time to spawn.

Now I'm trying to decide if I want to try to get another masters before we try for kids.

  • We have been talking about having one, but I know we both aren't ready. I still have to finish grad school, and I would like to be a little more financially stable before we have a little one.. having a child is incredibly expensive...Good luck to all the nesties TTC!

  • We are not baby material.  I am 33.  DH is almost 35.  We just don't see a place in our lives for a child.  We agreed on this early on in our relationship.  We still struggle with explaining this to others.  People don't always understand.  We are set in our careers, financially stable and just don't want to rock the boat.  The other factor is that I work 2 hours away and live there 2 nights a week.  It would be impossible to work out unless I got another job closer to home.

LOL!  DH bought the book for me!  We went to B&N together to look for books.

My friend recommended 'YOU: Having a Baby' written by Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen.  I read some last night and I like how it speaks in layman's terms and there's not a lot of unnecessary medical garble.

Most reviews on Amazon are good, but the few that disliked the books said that the drawing of an episiotomy is inaccurate because it shows a scalpel instead of medical scissors.  But I seriously take that with a grain of salt.  The important part is that the woman understands why one would need it performed

I'm a labor/delivery nurse..and can tell you that it's not really accurate that a scapel isn't used for episiotomies.  While using a surgical scissors is much more common..scalpels are used sometimes too...just depends on the OB'd preference. :) So the book is accurate.

  • That's good to know!  I was miffed by the reviewers comments that the drawing was inaccurate.  You'd think that the artist would be smart enough to consult an OB before drawing.  Maybe that's what the OB who contributed to the book likes to use.

I should go back to Amazon's commenters and tell them to suck it!

  • Oh god, can we not talk about episiotomies!! That makes me sick to my stomach. I would much rather have a c-section than that!! I know it's a fact of life, but just thinking about it makes my girly bits nervous

  • I said 2-5 years.  We agreed to discuss after one year and either decide to try or wait some more.  Right now I'm thinking more, although I do have a bit of the baby fever being around pregnant women at work.  I know it's just fun to think about, however, I also know I'm not really ready to have one just yet.
  • For you ladiess that are TTC now or in the next couple years you should watch the documentary "The Business of Being Born" It is about It is about the hospital expenice vs. home birth and midwifes. It is quite a bit bias toward midwifes. But it is AMAZING. I streamed it off of netfilx. http://www.thebusinessofbeingborn.com/

LOL. Our Best Man is a big guy. When this summer, he was reading "What to expect, when you're expecting" and when the book got to the topic of episiotomies, he commented: "I just can't even think about it. Nasty" His mother was laughing that he should be the last person discusted by them, because he caused her a double one... he was such a big baby.

When we have a baby, I will have c-sections.  No offense, but I want my vajeyjey to stay intact :)

  • We're not baby material, and have agreed on that from the start. I don't even like to babysit. I'm okay with kids as long as their parents are nearby.

Pets are quite enough. My brothers and his sisters can do the baby-making, we'll be the fun aunt and uncle.

I didn't watch this yet...but I will tommorow or something.  I'm quite biased about the hospital experience, just being a labor/delivery nurse...too many times do women end up in very complicated situations during birth which can result in maternal/fetal death..or other problems..and so the whole midwife outside of a hospital thing scares me.  We see the worst of the worst from those situations as they come in in an ambulance in an emergency.  I'm all for midwives in hospitals though..we dont have any at the one I work at..but where theres tons of nurses to help, anesthesiologists in case of emergency..and obs on backup...I'm all for midwives.

I was talking to an OB dr recentley on this..apparently in some parts of Europe this is commonly done to preserve the pelvic wall muscles.. it's growing in popularity recently. I've seen this grow in popularity a bit here too

You mean c-section is becoming popular here? I thought it already was. Out of like 5 girls at work who had babies, they all had c-sections. In Poland, c-section is really expensive, and not covered by insurance, unless it's to save the baby's or mother's life. I hope I keep working at the same place in two years when we plan a baby so I can have a nice c-section without a cent out of my pocket.

  • I meant- elective C-section is becoming popular here.

C-section out of necessity already is...i.e. failure to progress in labor, non reassuring fetal heart tones, breech position/other malpresentation, etc, etc
