well, i think my response was multi-faceted.
1) the author was a little too open with her feelings on the topic. she's entitled to her opinions but the things she said could be hurtful.
2) people making out on TV gross me out no matter their shape. i just don't want to see that unless i want to see that. and if i wanted to see that, i'd seek out the playboy channel or something.
3) overweight people make me cringe not on an individual basis but in the fact that i hate how we have been taught to eat (or not taught to eat really). i just get mad when i see overweight people because we have been duped for so long into believing that these foods that are created in labs are actually GOOD for us. i mean, yes, MOST people are obese because of what they put in their mouth, but many of them believed the package labels that scream things like "low fat" and "diet" and whatnot.
i wish we weren't held captive by the food industry. i wish the people who make food were honest and had our best interests in mind but instead, they have their wallets in mind.
i can wish all day that people would educate themselves, and i still wish that, but you have to REALLY want to and you have to have time to do that, energy to do that and a certain level of intelligence to comprehend what you're reading and put it into practice in a way that fits with your lifestyle.
we're set up to fail and to be fat and that's what is really disgusting.
No one set me up to be fat. I am completely responsible. I know the right way to eat, I just choose not to do it. And I'm comfortable.
I just think very few people are good looking enough to be deciding who is attractive enough to be seen kissing.
The author of the article has a huge nose, droopy eyes, and a sideways smile that looks like she got punched in the face a lot as a child. I don't want to see her kissing anyone either.

On the BMI scale, I am obese.
I rarely buy "junk" foods. For breakfast I will have a whole wheat bagel w/ light cream cheese or PB, 1 frozen waffle toasted (unbuttered, no syrup, just eat it dry like toast), or a banana. My lunch is 95% of the time: a turkey sandwich on "light" (low sugar) 12 grain bread, with a slice of low fat cheese and some mustard. An apple or some other fruit (depending on what is in season). Usually greek yogurt but sometimes I'll have archer farms low-fat. Lowfat string cheese. Water, tea or diet coke. Dinners vary - but anyone who knows me on FB or Twitter often sees what we cook and it is almost always well balanced and homemade. I can count on one hand the number of potato chip bags we purchase each year. We rarely buy processed snacks. I do have a tremendous weakness for sweets - so I don't purchase them. I just don't, becuase at the store I have willpower. it's once I get home that I cave in and eat too much of a bad thing.
I didn't grow up with good nutrition. I'm positive this is a huge part of why I am overweight. I'm also naturally big. I did weight watchers, lost a lot of weight, was down to 135 lbs and I had to starve myself and work out daily and I couldn't even maintain that weight. I was eating a hard boiled egg for breakfast, for lunch was a big salad with 1/2 grilled chicken breast on it, with 1 teaspoon (measured) of olive oil for dressing, 1-2 cups of fruit and usually a cup of raw veggies w/ hummus. Dinner was the other half of the chicken breast and more fruit and veggies. I had 2 graham crackers with 1 tablespoon (measured out) of PB and a glass of milk for a snack. I was jogging Lake Nokomis daily, with weights. That wasn't a healthy or fun way to live.
SO yes, some of the obesity problem are a result of choices. But not all of it. I think the idea that "fat" people need to stay off of TV is unbelievably rude, and her article had me nearly in tears. I didn't realize that people might be personally offended to just look at someone like me, who is considered obese. It's sad.

F*ck them. Imagine how miserably self-absorbed and insecure they must be to have that reaction to people ON TV. Seriously. I'd go f*cking insane if I felt bothered enough by crap like that to write an article about it. (And then get blasted so bad that I had to come back and admit that I had an eating disorder to the whole world like the author did.)

P.S. I think they are jealous of our boobies.

I think in general, show biz feels the way this writer does. You know, we don't see a lot of overweight people cast in shows. She said all the things that TV, movies, and ads say everyday. You won't see a plus size woman in her sweatpants on her sofa eating a Ghiradelli square seductively with her finger in her mouth. I think it is wrong that things can't be more realistic in regards to TV shows and media in general.
I guess I'm not surprised that she would say something like this when that is what TV has been. I was surprised that it was on Marie Claire, when they have the plus sized fashion blogger. I was happy that they seemed more relevant than most magazines.
I think that obesity is more obvious, thus easier to point out as a negative. Where a skinnier person could be 10x less healthy than someone who is slightly overweight, and not get any discrimiation or negativity.

Seriously, yes. Fvck people like her. I get that. But this girl is PMSy and cranky and has no tolerance for people who think fat love is ugly. Love is love, maaaaan. Can't we all just get along?

There are certain situations I cringe at. My BF used to work at a Pizza Hut buffet, she did the lunch buffet every day of the week for 8 years (her last day was last week). (I also worked here doing the lunch buffet for 6 months or so, but it was 8 years ago).
When I worked there EVERY single Friday two extremely obese ladies came in to eat at the buffet. They drank diet soda for 2 hours as they ate as much as they could. Over the last 8 years they have rarely missed a Friday and, this is no joke- I am not kidding, for the past 5 or so years they bring a small TV in with them and watch that while they eat (the manager allowed it). - situations like this- I cringe at. A. because it's sad. B. because I feel bad for them.
I could not have said it any better
i'm not picking on what you eat (because it sounds pretty great) but i wanted to point out that what you listed, depending on who's manufactured it, can actually be really bad for you and that was my point. with all the chemicals and "enriched" this and that, something that sounds good for you, can actually be worthless. so, it's a bummer to me that people can think they are being healthy and really aren't being.
again, not saying the brands your buy aren't good because i don't know what they are, just saying that sometimes things sound healthy but aren't.
Most telling to me is the author admitting she suffered from anorexica, because that skews her entire notion of normal, thin, heavy, etc. I believe she came across as ignorant, rude, condescending, patronizing, insulting... to not just heavy people but those of us MARRIED to heavy people that we love dearly.
I think science is sloooowly catching up on this whole weight issue. For example things coming out: a woman's weight while pg has a dramatic impact on her unborn baby's future of being overweight. Researchers are looking at the uterous environment as a factor beyond "nature vs nuture" post-birth.
Science is finding exersize does little for weight and in fact can make people gain weight because their appetites increase and/or they splurge more because they "earned" it.
There is something, sorry I don't know the science well, but allellil? they'd found that is like a virus where people who get it will be heavier than people who don't have that marker. So sorry for the lack of more info except it's from a long NYmagazine article a few years ago. The idea of "catching obesity" is slowly coming out more in the media because of some of these scientific findings.
Then we have the whole calorie thing not correlating perfectly to what goes in vs energy expected by people like me who have always been thin, eat anything I want and never gain weight. I don't eat super healthy, don't work out, have spent months on bedrest that make me weak but not heavier.
And we have interesting studies on food deprivation in all sizes of people and the "bounce back" effects not matching between fat vs thin people. There is something different going on in heavier people explained beyond simple calories in vs out.
Allele. It just means gene. Different variants of the same gene. So your variant keeps you thin, someone else's allows them to get fat. In the perspective of evolution, the "fat" allele would have been more preferable because it would allow a body to store more fat during times of scarce food. Therefore, it would have been more likely to be propagated to future generations as their offspring would likely be more successful.
Honestly, I'm surprised evolution has not made us all a bunch of fat people.

I know skinny and fat people who are both healthy and not at all healthy. My old boss was 5' 2" and 100 pounds, and she ate ice cream, cheese cubes and slices of ham every day at work for lunch. She regularly said that "vegetables are icky!" and refused to eat them. Her favorite food was a McD's fish sandwich. She also told me that she has high cholesterol.
I'm overweight/obese/however people want to put it and my cholesterol is perfect, my bp is perfect.. so ??

This. I spent money to go to a nurtitionist last year. I learned and read boxes and spent hours int he grocery store trying to figure out what was "good". Spent hours each week at the gym and planning meals and all that. Last weekend I went to a conference about all this and was told that anything with over 5 ingredients on it is bad. The trainer at the gym told me to eat meal replacement bars while trying to lose weight.
My point is that I AM TRYING. But I'm getting a different answer from everywhere that I turn and I have no clue what to do sometimes. Obviously I want to eat healthy things and I try. But I have to be realistic in my schedule too and work some things in that aren't fruit & veggies I carry with me.
It's increditbly frustrating. Incredibly.
Oh, and I think the author is an a s s.
exactly. I've been this way my whole life.
I'm now at the point that realizing that my weight has a HUGE effect on me getting pregnant which is something HIGH on my priority list right now. It sucks because I know how far I need to go to be at a 'healthy' weight so that I can conceive and start a family. It's depressing, really.
I'm absolutely flabbergasted that a former anorexic can't comprehend disordered eating and unhealthy relationships with food go both ways. It floors me. I mean, what if I went to her when she was at her skinniest and said, Dude, it's not that hard. Have a cheeseburger and fries everyday, and you'll put the weight back on. Stop when you get where you want to be. Duh, it's totally within your control. People would freak the fvck out, because it's insensitive, and a gross oversimplification of the issue.
SAME effing thing here.
I also object to the idea that anyone gives a flying fvck what she finds aesthetically appealing. I find the notion of people wearing leggings as pants displeasing, but I'm not about to argue that those people should not be shown on TV.
I just find her point of view to be dehumanizing. There is a legitimate conversation to be had here, but her approach was absurd and insulting.
I agree, however, that Mike and Molly should not be on TV. I just feel that way because it's not even remotely funny or entertaining, not because fat people are gross.
This. It's hard to know where to start, where to go...

This is not very relevant, but I'd also like to take a moment and express how misleading the BMI chart is. I have about 30 pounds on my best friend, she's 3 inches taller, and we wear the same size clothes. She wears them a little better, but not 30 pounds better.
At my heaviest, I was 260 and a size 20. Right now I'm 225 and between a 12 and 14. The actual fat/muscle composition is so important. Last time I weighed my goal weight of 185, I was a 12/14. Now I have muscle.
BMI does not tell all. My doctor picked my goal weight based on my frame. It puts me solidly at overweight.
Most annoying to me is that MC keeps getting site hits and was at the top of twitter trending today because of this and the other article about the healthy living bloggers a few weeks ago. I am sorry that I gave them one click the way it is.
That being said, this author was writing a blog post on their website. I can't see why MC wouldn't have had an editor at least look at this even for a blog post to approve before posting - especially after the last outrage they received.
I for one don't bother with lady mags because they are full of the same crap that I don't need but if I had been a reader or subscriber they would have lost me. I have a feeling they have lost a lot of reader ship between the last two stints. And maybe that is what this was: publicity stunt for a dying media.
In regards to health and obesity, I personally don't think size is an indicator of health. I do agree with those above that or food system is flawed. It's unfortunate that it takes so much work to learn how to eat properly.

My boss is the same way. She is really thin, but she eats really poorly. She had to drink ensure when she was pregnant, and went on bedrest often because of health related issues. I sincerely doubt she's had the dirty looks that bigger/overweight/obese people get when eating the same types of foods.
I don't know if you were wanting me to explain what you quoted. I meant that it's just more visually obvious for people to see a bigger person and label them as unhealthy. I don't think that's right. I'm just saying it happens.

Jen Lancaster wrote a response to it on her site.
And I want to say that BMI is bullshitt. Anita, you are not obese, and unless you've changed dramatically since i last saw you, you're not unhealthy.
BMI is nothing more than an equation, but without enough variables. According to BMI charts for my height, I should weigh 120.
WHAT? If you've met me, you know, I would look sickly and unhealthy at 120-125.
No, not wanting you to explain what I quoted. Just backing up what you wrote with my own personal experience. I agree with you that skinny doesn't automatically equal healthy, just as fat doesn't automatically equal unhealthy.

I totally get what you are saying. A lot of food items out there are just not good for us. I'm much more particular and aware of this than my husband is, which is why I insist on doing the grocery shopping. When we buy packaged items - I always make sure it is free of HFCS or ingredients I can't say or find "in nature." It drives my husband a little crazy sometimes, because he just doesn't get it. He's starting to, though, which I appreciate. We certainly aren't perfect, but we try.
I do know people who think that something is healthy because it's labelled all natural, or low fat, or fat free, and I agree that it is misleading and it is hard to get the right info. I do feel like I would be ahead of the general population as far as this knowledge goes, however.

I'm reading this article and thread while eating ice cream.
Fvck em! I'm having twins!
I'll second this. And I'll tell you that the nutritionist last fall told me to eat light versions of eveything I could. The specialist this weekend told me to eat the real thing, just in moderation. The light and low fat and no fat versions all have fillers and more sugar.
It;s just confusing and hard to learn what truely is right.
Good lord, this woman is pathetic. "Hey, I'm so cool that I bike in high heels and have TONS of friends with actual jobs, but I've never been in love so I'm going to make dating my NEW JOB! WHEEEEEE!!!!" What a loser.
Hey, MK, I'm nowhere near thin right now, but at least I get laid on a regular basis. She sounds like she's really jealous that even the FAT people are having sex and she isn't.
