I am so frustrated by voting

I realize we are supposed to believe all votes count, but that is hard to swallow when over and over again my vote really doesn't do jackshit in the great red state of Tex-ass.

Sorry, i needed to get that out.

Re: I am so frustrated by voting

  • :(  I feel your pain.  No one I voted for yesterday won. I was really hoping for a miracle or at least some sort of *** you close race to our sleazeball senator.

I console myself with ballot initiatives.  I think that's where my vote makes more of a difference.  And I volunteer in districts where candidates I like have better chances (Yay Richmond!!!!), but you probably don't have time to do that with the bebe and the business and all that.

  • What do you do volunteerwise?

So far, the only dems winning in my area were either the only candidate on the ballot or are winning but only 1-2% of precincts are reporting, so who knows.

The governor's race was somewhat closer but effing Rick effing Perry? COMMON!

  • I'm sorry dude. I think I'd be incredibly frustrated if I were in your shoes. Or your state.

  • I do mostly phone calls.  I did Organizing for America and Women for Melancon this year,  OFA was pretty much calling and reminding people to vote, to bring ID, and helping them with resources on how to get to the polls if they needed it.  We did ask if they were supporting Richmond and Melancon, but I only talked positions if people said they were undecided and wanted to talk.  It was all GOTV.

WFM was strictly calling women and talking to them about the differences in the two candidate's records on women's issues.  In both cases we're calling democrats or people who have been Obama supporters in the past, so it's not a lot of hostile people.

I also did data entry for OFA.  There are a lot of other jobs if you don't want to do the phones.

I'm sitting on your couch in the state to your north.

ALL of our asinine, xenophobic state questions passed, we have a new governor who was endorsed by Sarah Palin and thinks being a mother is her biggest qualification for office, and a new US Rep whose only previous experience is running a large Baptist church camp.

    yay Oklahoma.

  • Our 21 year incumbent democratic senator was just defeated by a newb republican whose ENTIRE campaign was "Gene Taylor voted with Nancy Pelosi". Seriously, I never heard a damn thing about where he actually stood on issues. It was just "I'm a conservative Republican, and ::finger pointing:: he votes with Nancy Pelosi". It drives me batty.

I was completely satisfied with Gene Taylor, but at least I knew what he stood for.  I hate people (on both sides) that vote strictly on party lines without actually looking at the candidate.

Now there's the kind of executive experience we need in this country.

Your Sharia law initiative.  Um, yeah.

We had a couple of asinine ones pass, but nothing too terrible.  Our state legislature now has to approve any increase in any public retirement system by 2/3 majority, even COLAs.  We have 14 statewide public retirement systems, but this even includes stuff like city employees, police, and utility retirement systems, so they don't even know how many there are.  Once they actually have to start voting on there it will be such a time suck.

  • Missouri has been getting redder in recent years, so I know it can be frustrating.  But what if there are a big chunk of liberal pansies in your state that just stay home because, WTF, look at all these rednecks, what's the point?  I think voting in your case is less in hopes of helping someone win and more of a "hey, we are all not fundamentalist Christian Mexican haters down here."

Oh, I agree. And that is why I continue to vote. And the place I vote is a tiny blue section of our city and it is always great to see a good turnout. but damn.

  • I can imagine how frustrating it must be.  I get frustrated here too.  Right now, I'm having heart palpitations because it looks like our new governor is going to be a guy who thinks it's no big deal to buy a house in another state so he doesn't have to pay taxes here.  But somehow he supports the schools.  Just not with his tax dollars, I guess.  Ugh, I'm not looking forward to this.

I'm also pissed that people voted no to a water park (mostly a casino, but let's focus on the important part here, people)!  I WANT A WATER PARK!

The Sharia law one is the most embarassing. Followed by English only, "Obamacare" opt-out, and ID required to vote.

Some good did come out of this, though. I got in my very first FB political argument and was called both uneducated AND a Muslim. Good times.
  • I always hate the south more on the day after election day.  Mothereffing Nathan Deal?!?! Really Georgia?!! His acceptance speech riddled with baptist bullsh!t was really tough to take.  And amendment one passed by 66%, which really makes me want to throw things.  Anyone who read anything about that amendment past what was printed on their ballot would never have voted for it, but it was so fraudulently worded, and people do so little research before they vote that it passed with flying colors. I have so much anger today.

  • I don't care where you live, living in a country where Christine "I don't understand the words in the First Amendment" O'Connell only lost by 17% of the vote is demoralizing.

In my hometown district the 30 yr incumbent who has done so much for the area and who is so accessible to the people lost to a TEA Partier Republican who doesn't even effing live in the area. And, hey morons, you're a half of bunch of union-loving coal and lumber workers and half a bunch of people living below the poverty line who have to wait in line for 10 hours to receive free medical care once a year.  Everyone who voted for the anti-union, anti-"Obamacare" newbie is stupid as shiit.  Good luck with all that.

We had a similar measure pass.  The wording was basically, "Do you want longer mandatory sentences for repeat child molesters?"  So of course it passed.  But if you read the whole thing, you'd see it wasn't something you should vote for.

  • I don't understand why so many senior citizens support the tea party movement.  Uh, you do understand that you are the primary beneficiaries of our large and unwieldy federal government, right?

In general, I'm just so disenchanted with politics.  Regardless of party, I don't think any politician plans beyond the next election cycle.  This is why we are always in crisis mode - there's no long-term thinking anywhere in politics.

Yes yes. Don't vote for the party that wants to get you healthcare and help you up out of poverty, vote for the party that want to keep all those scary gays from marrying and the scary Mexicans in Mexico. That is clearly the best thing you can do for yourself. You may live in a shack and have no teeth, but goddamn, at least those gays aren't ruining your marriage.

Last night Lorne pointed out that O'Donnell was losing by a sizeable margin, but I agree with you. 40% of those people heard even some of the crazy, unimformed shiit that came out of her mouth and STILL thought she was the best person for the job. I find it incredibly unsettling. Also, if she really thinks scientists are creating rats with human brains and that no one else is upset about this, she must live in a pretty terrifying little world.

Wait, I'm so foffing confused.  I read this morning that 744 (contstitutional amendment making us pay $X/kid for education, regardless of budget/revenue with no requirement as to how the money gets spent) and 754 (makes 744 unconstitutioal, this one is un-repeal/amendable) both failed.  Did that change?

That area isn't about "values" votes as far as I can tell. They are too isolated for immigration and gay rights tp be on their radar. The ads were all he likes BIG gov't and he votes with Obama and Pelosi.  Well, duh.  He's a Democrat, you fools, and you have been too 30 years.  You NEED big gov't.--medicare and medicaid are big gov't., social security is big gov't, WIC is big gov't.

  • It's equally sad that just saying, "I'm not with Obama and Pelosi!" can make someone win.  I'd like to know what percentage of Nancy Pelosi haters know anything about her.

  • Yeah, Fallin, but now the most important person in the Democratic party is a scary black man with a funny name. I hope that's not all of it, but I really can't understand it. All of the southern democratic areas swung. Arkansas now has its first Republican senator since the civil war.

  • I don't think it's a race thing b/c Obama carried that district on 2008.

And we can't fool ourselves. People are pissed at the Democrats.  I know I am.  I think Pelosi sucks.  I think Obama is weak. I think the Democrats can't find a message to save their lives.  I mean, were any of you excited to be voting for the Dems yesterday?  I voted very grudgingly. I'm sick to death of voting for the Dem b/c, well, at least he's not the Republican.

  • The following question is posed by a Canadian who doesn't really understand how the American political system works.  Ignorant, yes.

Why do you only have 2 parties?   They are so polarizing that this pendulem momentum is onlly going to continue.

I honestly don't think changing the two party system would help with the political probalem we have. Or maybe it would help some, but we have many other issues apart from that.
