Clicky poll: grocery stores
Just curious...which grocery store do you shop at the most?[Poll]
Re: Clicky poll: grocery stores
my read shelf:
We are a three-way split: Costco, Rainbow, and SuperTarget.
DH likes grocery shopping but I hate it. If he didn't like it I would for sure look into delivery like Corborns.
75% of the time I shop at Cub (mostly because they've been sending out so many great coupons lately)
25% of the time I grocery shop at Target, it's closer and on my direct route home, this is also where I run if I realize I'm short an ingredient or two...
We mostly shop at Cub because they have the fun "Truck" carts for Aiden (sad I know but happy kid = Happy shopping ) plus the stuff we need is always on sale.
I picked Super Target because I feel like we buy a majority of our weekly/incidental items there, but I also shop sales so if Cub has a good deal on something we get it there. I find that for the most part, Super Target is cheaper then Cub on most things except produce.
We buy a lot of things from Costco - I would say we go there 2x a month and stock up on different things depending on what we need, but a lot of our food and household items come from there as long as it makes sense. Not everything is cheaper at bulk stores. I am lucky that H is stats and math guy, so comparison shopping is easy.
I also shop at Trader Joe's for a few specialty items about 2x a month, and occasionally Whole Foods also for specialty things.
Boy/girl twins born at 37w1d and 37w2d
we are kind of a split too.
40% Byerlys
25% Kowalskis
25% Super Target
5% Whole Foods
5% Sams Club
If we have a big list, I try to go to Super Target first since i get a discount there. We do a lot of "picking up" this or that a Byerlys (milk, bananas, yogurt, eggs) and Kowalskis is our "we just need 1 thing" store because it's super close.
Once a month lars will sock up on frozen fish filets from Sams and we stock up on some other things like organic ketchup/mayo/pasta at Whole Foods.
I'm very fortunate in that I have a fantastic independent neighborhood grocery store two blocks from my house. I pick up ingrediants for dinner on my walk home from work... SO NICE.
We have a weekly CSA vegetable delivery; I shop at the Hampden co-op about once a month, and we order from Coburn's maybe...once every 3 months or so. Oh, and my husband occasionally stops by Costco on his way home to stock up on things like ginormous vats of olive oil...
Shopping is much more relaxing now that we can generally avoid big crowded places like Cub, etc.
I purposely alternate weeks because there are things at different stores that I like.
Week 1 - Cub where I buy some meat, and incidential things that they may have on sale.
Week 2 - Trader Joes. Love their frizoen section and some of the products we use/I use I can only find there.
Week 3 - Super Target - Close to home (<3 miles), specialty items that they have, some meat.
Week 4 - Coburns. They have the oatmeal and some fo the protein bars that I like along with a good bulk selection of organic things.
I also suppliment with Costco about once every 4 months for bigger packagens of meat, household items and some food items.
I'm a special snowflake!
We shop at Festival because it's close. Next on the list is Cub, then Target (DH gets the discount), then Costco for bulk stuff and lastly Coborn's when I have a coupon/discount/don't want to leave the house to shop!
We shop at Mississippi Market except for a few things. DH buys ground beef from Farm on Wheels at the St. Paul Farmer's Market. Chicken for DH and my dog's food come from Callister Farms at the St. Paul Farmer's market. In the summer, I have a veggie garden and get some stuff from my dad who has a gigantic garden.
I don't remember the last time we went somewhere else. We started shopping at Mississippi Market a couple years ago and it has turned me into a bit of a food snob.
Tired after a long morning of hiking and swimming.
I voted for Target - Weekly - Good deals on organic milk, market pantry juices and meats (their chicken breasts are always significantly cheaper than elsewhere). We like their artisan breads and MP lines. We also pick up cereals and granola bars for less there.
Rainbow - Weekly to Bi-weekly - Their produce is better than Target and usually better than the Cub by us. Otherwise we treat it similar to Target
Byerlys -Bi-weekly - Meats and produce - especially good when they are having a BOGO sale! Also good for organic fresh herbs - but I've noticed that Rainbow nows carries them too. It is on my way home so if I need anything, I'll stop in there, but I try to avoid it for general shopping.
Cub - bi-weekly - Usually just if we need rice (they are the only place I've found that carries the basmati rice we like). When I stop in for that I'll look to see what is on sale (BOGO) and shop accordingly.
Trader-Joes - Monthly - Naan bread, good brown rice, good marinated meats (Bolgogi!), cheap but good organic produce, wine and whatever else looks interesting.
Super Target 60%
Cub 15%
Lunds 15%
Aldi 5%
Mississippi Market 5%
i WISH there was a co-op of some sort closer to us, we'd shop there. As it is, we are 99% coborn's delivers. Love.
I will never shop at Trader Joe's. My step-dad's family is largely grocery oriented (they've all worked in grocery forever) and the stories about where a lot of the product (mostly the "fresh" stuff) comes from have ensured I will never shop there again. We used to get almond milk there, but now it's cheaper at Target. So we're 1% Target.
For the people that use Coburns, can you tell me a little more? The site says they accept manufacturer coupons. Do you just enter the codes online or give them to the driver? Have there been items you can't get through them? Do the containers really keep everything frozen/fresh if you aren't home when they deliver?
I've been thinking about talking to DH about it. With the twins coming, I think it may be easier to let someone else just deliver the groceries. But we also have to be budget conscious.
Eat.Drink.BeMarried. Blog.
Yes they accept all manufacturer coupons. You just enter the amount of the coupon and then leave the coupons by the door. They also have coupons and lots of deals weekly. If you want I can e-mail you a link and you'd save $20 off your first order.
I'm curious: what's that about?
It's owned by the same guy who owns Aldi. I've never been in an Aldi, so I have no idea what they're like.
This confuses me. (Not necessarily questioning you, it just surprised me)
Aldi is an international discount-chain. I used to shop at Aldi in Germany years before they started making regular appearances in MN.
Trader Joe's is a US brand that has just been recently developing a stronger market presence across the country.
It doesn't make sense to me that both entities would be owned by the same "guy"
A Little Bird and a Monkey Butt
the "german" bought it in 1979.
So, I stand corrected. A friend who reads these boards daily and yet NEVER posts (seriously, don't you think she should stop lurking and post?) just provided me with this link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trader_Joe's
According to the Wiki article, Trader Joe's is now held by a trust set-up by the Albrecht family (Aldi founders). The fact that it is part of a business group makes more sense to me than one guy owning it all.
