I'm sick and fukcing tired of the "BOYCOTT AMAZON! PROTECT OUR BABIEZ!" posts on FB over the pedophile book. But how can I be all "Down with censorship! First Amendment RULES!" without looking like a pedophilia-loving pervert?

Re: A conundrum
I have the same conundrum.
There's really no winning with this issue. They did pull the book, though, so hopefully it'll die down soon.

Now I need a link to the pedophile book.
Why would you NOT want to know how a pedophile thinks? Wouldn't that be helpful as a parent?
"As of page 2 this might be the most boring argument ever. It's making me long for Rape Day." - Mouse
Fent, it was taken down.
I think it's hilarious that people are getting so riled up over it when Amazon (and B&N and the local effing library) have LOADS of "questionable" material. Mapplethorpe, anyone? The Anarchist's Cookbook?

you really love children, don't you?
DON'T YOU??
Mouse, self publishing brings a whole different flavor to the debate. This was a self-published book. By asking Amazon to take down a selfpubbed book I am asking for the only distribution vehicle for that book to be removed.
The book actually violated Amazon's own publishing guidelines which is (I think) why it was removed.
For me the big issue isn't whether or not the book is removed, but how I feel about myself asking for any book to be made less available. I don't think Amazon has any responsibility to give a platform to this kind of hinkyasscrazyevil, but I am not sure I want to be the one leading the charge to make them remove the book (also am not sure I don't want to be).

This is a lot of how I feel.
I also hate the "Amazon is not responding as quickly as I'd like. They must be pedophiles themselves! BOYCOTT!!!!"
I know it did drag on a bit (apparently this was discovered a couple of weeks ago) but it's not an instant "Oh, this is bad! Let's take it down!"
International, multi-million dollar companies can't just make snap decisions like that. Which I know you know, Mod, but it seems like many don't understand.

I'm with you. And it's not a First Amendment issue at all.
I'm a fellow roly poly here. How the eff do you spell rolly polly? Roley poley? Whatever, it's dark under here so I can't see my keyboard anyway

That was an interesting read, Mod. Thanks. I've mostly stayed out of it until I could do some reading of my own (not on how to be a pedophile, just on both sides of the issue.
I do tend to eyeroll a lot of "BOYCOTT FOR THE CHILDREN!!!!" mostly because it's so reactionary, but I am glad Amazon pulled it in this case.

Bethie--It's only a first amendment issue if there is government action--say Congress or California bans the book. Amazon can choose to sell or not sell it.
Mod--I don't think Amazon is the only outlet. It may be the largest, but there's always Lulu.
I guess I just think some things are so offensive or dangerous and without redeeming value that I'm ok censoring them. How to prey on children without getting caught is in that category for me. So would a manual on how to rape women, or lynch black people, or beat up gay people, for example.
But there ARE books that show graphic photographs of lynching victims and books that teach you how to build a pipe bomb, etc. etc.
Trust me, I am totally fine with it being pulled. I have personal reasons why the book angered me so much, but it seemed like the latest hot topic for a lot of people on FB.

I would agree that FB people are crazy. I just have tons of people giving shout outs to soldiers.

Eh, I see what you're saying. You know I'm totally in favor of the book being pulled. But NOT pulling it doesn't mean that Amazon is run by a bunch of kiddie diddling sympathizers, which seems to be the message of the masses.
Husbands should be like Kleenex: Soft, strong, and disposable.
Very true.
See that's the thing, I agree with this 100%. I, personally, am glad Amazon stopped selling the book. I think I am comfortable with asking Amazon (and anyone) to stop selling since the author claims his book gives tips on how to be a pedophile and get a lighter sentence if you are caught. I also think I agree with the Paul Carr in this article http://techcrunch.com/2010/11/10/amazon-banning-one-vile-ebook-a-victory-for-what-exactly/ talking about his beliefs that having this book out there is simply disgusting but doesn't actually endanger kids any more or any less
I am generally one to think that slippery slope arguments are lazy, so I don't necessarily want to argue that banning this book (in either a legal or economic way) will damage the first amendment. But I also feel squicky about personally taking any steps to limit access to any book, no matter how distasteful I find it. If the guy put it out for free on the internet through a self-hosted site or was giving away copies from his backyard as much as I would hate it and hate him I would feel like he was protected unless it was determined he his speech was illegal under Brandenburg. I don't know that I, personally, want to take any action against speech that would be considered legal except for myelf by not reading it and not patronizing merchants that promote it. For what it's worth, I don't think by having it for sale Amazon was actively promoting it.

If it's an issue I care about I don't have any problem with it. I write companies if I disapprove of the way they're doing business (see: tech companies and the Sudan) and I boycott (currently *gulp* Target) even if I'm not in danger of being gang-raped by the army or running for office. I have no problem with public pressure. I have very large problems with threats of violence or the government interfering with civil rights.

So, as long as Amazon is not actively promoting it (what does that look like for Amazon? Putting it on the front page?), they have no responsibility? They're still provising a large outlet for it and profiting from its sales. Doesn't that make them complicit, at least a little. I agree with Mouse. I can't see any problem with consumers expressing their distaste for the decisions corporations make via their pocketbooks. That's a lot different from calling for bans or government censorship.
Fallin for me, at least on first blush, no Amazon isn't complicit. Their book buyers did not buy this book. They haven't selected it as an Amazon pick or put it on the front page. My limited knowledge of their self-publishing policies puts them more in the Craigslist camp of simply being a platform.I think they have responsibility to obey the laws and that's it. I think they made a smart economic decision in pulling the book because of social pressure.
Mouse, I wasn't trying to say it was wrong to exert pressure on retailers and speak with your pocket book. Just that when it comes to books in a bookstore, and in this case a book that Amazon did not select but that was placed for sale by a 3rd party, I felt no compulsion to take my business elsewhere even if they hadn't pulled it.

I'm trying to boycott Tarjay and I feel your pain. Damn them and their pleasant shopping experience.
I am opposite boycotting Home Depot, by the way. There's a movement to boycott them because they offer full benefits to their employee's gay partners, and sponsor gay pride events. So I've started shopping there instead of Lowe's in case you do a lot of home improvement shopping.
As for Amazon, I guess I think they did the right thing in this case. Even if it is like craigslist when it comes to self published works, craigslist decides what can be advertised on there and what can't. I think they made the right decision here once it was brought to their attention.
The nerve!

Mod, just so you know I wasn't taking what you said as against me personally in anyway. I certainly don't think you should be pressured to take your business elsewhere for fear people will think you're pro-chester the child molester. I was just trying to offer another perspective.
Sarah, good to know. We have no home improvement monies right now, but when we do I'll head over there.
