Thanksgiving desserts

Hey ladies!  I told my MIL last night I would bring a dessert to Thanksgiving, but I don't know what to bring.  I tried searching the net for some ideas but it was so overwhelming and nothing stuck out to me.  As far as I know, the basic pies are covered (pumpkin and apple).

So, what are you bringing for dessert or looking forward to having for dessert at Thanksgiving?

Re: Thanksgiving desserts

  • I'm doing a caramel apple pie so that doesn't really help you.  My cousin does an amazing pumpkin roll most years.  It's a pumpkin cake made in a jelly roll pan then spread with a cinnamon creamcheese frosting and rolled up.  It is SO GOOD.  I can get the recipe for you if you're interested!
  • What about the gooey pumpkin cake munkii posted below?  Or are you trying to stay away from pumpkin because there will also be pumpkin pie?

Is there a flavor you want to go with?

I have a great cheesecake recipe (plain, with cherry topping), if you want it.  I also have an awesome Death By Chocolate recipe (similar to a trifle).   The only problems with these are that they are very rich and heavy after a heavy meal.

  • I thought about the gooey pumpkin recipe from below, but I thought I read that you need to make and serve it fresh?  We are leaving Wednesday night so it would need to be something I could make the night before.  I don't mind something pumpkin, I was kind of hoping for something "seasonal" anyway.  The pumpkin roll actually sounds really good and not so heavy - good point about that!

  • Here's the recipe my cousin uses.  She uses pecans instead of walnuts and it is SO GOOD!  I want some right now.

  • The more I think about it, the intrigued I am by the idea of something like lemon bars or lemon meringue pie, even though they're not considered "winter foods."  They're neither rich, nor heavy, they're refreshing after a big meal and I feel that they would be a nice contrast to pumpkin and apple pie.

I'd be happy to share my grandma's LM pie recipe (a family treasure) if you decide to go that route.

I get the impression Muffin'sMom said that, and please correct me if I'm wrong, to discourage the baker from eating it all before taking it to dinner. Stick out tongue  One of my favorite TG desserts is persimmon pudding--it's yummy!  You could also do cupcakes--chai, guiness, anything.

@Karen, lemons are always good.  If you want to stick to a more wintery citrus, you could do orange bars (or blood orange bars).  Arance alla principessa would also be a light, fresh alternative, but I'm partial to caramelized citrus (think lemon cake with topped with caramel).

    Matt loves Munkii!!!
  • Oh haha!  I just skimmed so I could be wrong.  Great ideas girls, thanks!  Any recipes are welcome too :)

  • I am in the same boat- I'm supposed to bring a desert to Thanksgiving, but pumpkin and apple pie are already covered.

I think I'm going to make this- caramelized pear upside down cake. I thought pears are still pretty "fall-y" and I liked that it can be served at room temperature. I'll probably up the spice a little bit and add some ground cloves/extra cinnamon.

  • my mom makes 7 layer bars, they are AMAZING. heres the recipe:

  • If other people are doing pies...I'd go with cookies or bars.  I have a wonderful lemon bar recipie, and you cannot go wrong with 7 layer bars or brownies.
