  • Ok, Cali can be the Rescuiest of the Rescuers, Buddha can be the Rescuiest of the Resucers Plus Heart Condition, and Fitty can be the Rescuiest of the Rescuers times infinity plus one no take backsies.

Your award is the smug satisfaction of knowing that you're better than everyone else. If we're going by that ML chick's guidelines.

I have never really thought about it in terms of who is doing the BEST BESTEST thing in the rescue/shelter adoption world, but the "big whoop" in adopting is that all those individual adopters just adopting their one little pet are the reason that animal groups can keep their heads above water. At least until real progress can be made in spay/neuter laws and restricting puppy mills and breeders, adoption is the key.

It starts with the countless irresponsible owners and breeders who abandon millions of dogs and cats, and then begins the big pushing-out process. A constant effort to push animals from one resource-strapped group to another in the hopes of saving as many as possible and killing as few as possible. You simply can't do that without a whole lot of willing, qualified, responsible adopters. So it does seem like a humble little thing to just go adopt one little dog (I mean big dog, of course!), ho hum, but the system breaks down without those people.

Fallin, I think there is a place for good breeders. The problem is that there are so, so few of them. People always say they bought from a "reputable" breeder....but they probably didn't. Mostly because reputable breeders don't breed enough for that many people to have their dogs.

I judge mills and backyard breeders, but I'm unconvinced that all people who buy dogs or cats are irresponsible douchebags.

I think you're right.  I think some people just don't "know better" and may not be aware of just how many animals are euthanized every year because there are so many bad breeders.  My childhood dog was from an ad in the paper and we thought that was just dandy.  Now I know better and chose to adopt adult dogs who needed homes.  (I fully admit I'm totally superficial about it and adopted cute ones...I think they are cute anyway.)  :-)

I judge the most when people DO learn the details and choose to adopt from a cruddy breeder anyway.  That really frosts my cookies.  Angry

  • Add a gem to your crown Mod. You fostering Fulton and showing us all of her puppy shenanigans turned up my desire to get a dog and also probably made Moxie one less dog that had to suffer the pain and embarrassment of Black Dog Syndrome.
I'm pretty sure it's pronounced your mom's a moron and if you didn't have your name legally changed by the age of 22, so are you. Unless you're from another continent. -Groomz
  • I rescued a one-eyed hamster once. AND GAVE HIM THE BEST DAMN HAMSTER LIFE A HAMSTER EVER LIVED.
