i am very upset...RANT. (long)

dh & i live in an apartment, right beside my mother, down a little road. we only have about 7 people that live down this road, so its not heavily traveled. all of us have animals, that we keep outside and all of us let our animals out of the kennel during the day. we also have a 20 mph speed limit POSTED on our road. so this morning, when i hear a huge thud, then my pup, hershey, whining, i run outside to check it out. the car was already nowhere in sight by the time i made it down the steps, and hershey was laying in my driveway, not moving. i ran over to my moms house and she brought a blanket to put over hershey, because it is about 10 degrees outside. we debated for a few moments on if we should move her or not, because we wasn't sure how bad her injuries was. then, about 2 minutes later, she stopped breathing. :( mom wrapped her up and carried her to her porch. my cousin calls me to say her friend just called her & told her she hit my dog. i asked why she didn't stop..she said she was afraid. bull crap, i know this girl, we went to school together. so on her way back down the road she stops. i told her "we have a speed limit sign posted for a reason!" then she says "ugh shasta"...like, don't be so dramatic. then she just leaves!

so aside from being very upset about my pup, my point is...what kind of person drives about 50 mph down a little road, hits someones animal & kills it, and doesn't even stop! then when they do come back, acts like they did nothing wrong. maybe i am being dramatic but i am just upset and needed to get that out. if you made it this far, thanks.

  • You are NOT over-reacting or being dramatic.  How traumatizing this must've been for you!!  Poor little Hershey!!!  Shasta, I am so, so, SO sorry.

That being said, I understand the girl being afraid.  I think I may have been too.  Especially had I been speeding - I would know that it was completely my fault and would feel too awful to say anything.  I think it was cool of her to even admit (after the fact) that it was her doing.

BUT she definitely needs to be more apologetic and less put off by you being upset.  Your DOG just died.  A little compassion, ya know?!

  • I am so SO sorry to hear about Hershey, Shasta.   You are not overreacting at all, and I'm appalled that she acted as if you were.  Your dogs life was taken, it's not as if he obtained a bruise/cut.

I am so incredibly sorry for your loss.

  • I'm so sorry to hear about Hershey. She was wrong to a) just leave the scene and b) make it as if you were being overdramatic.
  • I'm so sorry for your loss. It's so hard to lose a pet.

A couple years ago, a stranger hit our dog and drove off. Cowards. My thoughts are with you!

      Poor little Hershey!!!

THIS. I can't believe the stupid girl behaved like that!! She owes you a major apology. So sorry about your doggie. :(

  • I am so sorry about your dog...when I was kid one of our dogs got hit by a car - it is just a horrible thing.  And I can only imagine how much worse it is when you know it's due to recklessness on a neighbor's behalf, and who didn't even seem sorry.  So sorry hun.

  • I am so sorry for you hun :(

When I was in HS, I was driving down a main road and this cat ran out into the street and I hit it.  I pulled right over, my BFF was with me.  We pulled the cat off the road (it was still breathing and we were afraid someone else would hit it) and knocked on every door to find out who it belonged to because I felt so bad.  I can't imagine someone just driving away and then acting like it wasn't a big deal.

  • Shasta - totally agree with everyone else.  You are NOT being dramatic, you are NOT ranting.  What she did is *wrong* and she knows it.  If she was "afraid" she could have called you to come out.  Instead she fled the scene, which is immoral, especially since she knew whose dog it was.

I'm so, so, so sorry for your loss.  That's horrible. << hugs >>  I'd be bawling my eyes out all day.

  • Aww Shasta... I am tearing up just thinking about your loss and what you are going through.  Poor Hershey.  I don't understand how anyone (scared or not) can leave a poor defenceless animal in the cold like that.  Now I am not only crying but the more I think about it, the more I am outraged for you.  You definitely didn't over-react and that heartless b*tch needs to be held responsible.   Does your state have any laws about leaving an animal like that?

I am not sure if it is a MA state law or my city's law but it is against the law to leave the scene of an accident when you hit a dog....not a cat which I think it should also be.

If you're thinking of calling authorities, you might want to be sure there's no leash law requirement first. When my co-worker's dog was injured in a hit-and-run last year, police cited him because the dog wasn't leashed.

I can pretty much guarentee if she were to report it, she would be cited for keeping her dog outside and off leash. This is why in most states it's illegal to do so.

I do agree that the girl shouldn't have drove off. She should have stayed and maned up to her mistake.

    Sorry about your dog :(

  • How terrible!  I'm so sorry you had to go through that.  I just hugged my Riley a little tighter after reading this. :(

I'm with everyone else here...that was NOT an overreaction on your part!  If anything, hers was an UNDERreaction...I can't believe she would just drive away, no matter how scared she was, especially since she knows you!  That was just plain wrong.

  • If you were being over dramatic, this person who obviously has no idea what it means to love an animal, would have flipped if it had been me.

Losing a pet is not something to be taken lightly, it is a dramatic and traumatic event.

I'm so sorry about Hershey. :(

  • Wow, I cannot even imagine being in your shoes right now.  I am so sorry for your unexpected loss.

How rude and thoughtless of your cousin's friend to do such a thing.  It's almost worse that you know the person who did it I'd say.

Poor ppor Hersey and your family! T&P to you!

  • Oh no!! :( So sorry Shasta, I can't imagine.

That girl needs to own up. And the nerve of her acting like you're in the wrong for being upset. She'll get hers one day.

  • So SO sorry for your loss. You are not overreacting at all! It's especially disappointing that this girl knows you! She should have had the decency to pull over and help you out/make sure you were ok. T& P to you and your familly and poor Hershey.
  • i have no intention reporting her. i dont want to prolong the pain.. but technically she hit hershey at the bottom of my driveway. we still have snow, another reason she shouldnt have been driving so fast, but you can see her tracks..they are in my driveway. not sure why she wasnt on the road, but whatever. thanks again to all of you for caring! i can always count on my nesties!!
  • Oh Shasta, I am so sorry :(  I'm all teary eyed trying to type this.  As the other gals said, you are in no way over reacting.  that girl is heartless.  so is your cousin (if I remember right, who said you were being dramatic).

     *big hug*

  • I am so sorry!!  It is terrible to lose something close to you especially a beloved pet.  Why would she hit your puppy in your own driveway then leave?  That is a little messed up.  It's not like she hit her on a busy road in a crowded neighborhood.  She knew it was your dog.  Hopefully karma will pay her a visit.  My heart goes out to you.

  • Oh sweetie!  I am so, so sorry about the loss of your pup!  Poor baby.  Poor you.  You are totally not overreacting!  Not at all.  I am just guessing she is being defensive because she is feeling guilty about killing your dog.  But it still is no excuse.  She needs to apologize, and actually mean it.
