Good Morning!

Is everyone else back to work like I am?  While it's sad that the holiday season is over, I am kind of relieved to be able to focus on losing my holiday weight and back into my routine.  Don't get me wrong though - this week will be a bear.

And a random question - has anyone else read Pillars of the Earth?  I know it's old but I just finished it and don't recall whatever became of Martha.  I'm too lazy to go back to the book and try to find out.

Re: Good Morning!

  • I took a vacation day today.  You know why?  So I could finish this huge project that I told my boss I'd give her when we were back this week.  I'm wasting a fuuking vacation day to work.  Instead of just telling my boss I worked every available day of my time off on this ridiculous project.  And when I logged on to put on my out of office this morning, I saw that she spent yesterday e-mailing me new assignments and asking for updates on all of my current assignments, and also canceling some appointments in February so she can take vacation.  The SAME WEEK I WAS GOING TO GO ON VACATION.  She'll never let me take vacation the same time as her.  So, she effectively just canceled my vacation, which should would have known I'd scheduled if she bothered to check our department vacation file.  And my to-do list is out of control for when I get back tomorrow.

So...getting to the point, I'm pissed.

I read it last month. I don't think I noticed at the time, but I don't think it mantions what happened to her at the end. Odd. What did you think over all? I really liked it once the story got moving, but I think he spent entirely too much time on architectural description and William brooding.

  • I read that book so long ago, I have no memory of what happened to her.

I have one more day off until I go back to work tomorrow.  I have the house to myself and am not sure what to do with myself.

  • Hmm, I think Christin might be a little mad, you guys.

I've been working the last two weeks because I'm a dirty heathen, but there are actually other people here, so I may be forced to do work.  Ugh.  I got here on time which was a good first step that a lot of people didn't seem to bother with.

  • That sucks!  I'm sorry the year is getting off to such a rough start!

  • I hate this time of year. It's depressing when the holidays are over, I just bide my time waiting for Spring to come. At least I have Vegas to look forward to at the end of the month.

That sucks balls, Christin. I say you vow to never take a vacation day to work ever again.

  • Buddha, I actually really liked the book.  I definitely skimmed some of the architectural description stuff, but really liked Jack and Aliena.  It was quite the epic and took a long time for me to get through.  I want to read the next two books, but I might need some time off with a less dense read before I get into them.

  • Okay, that was really whiny.  Happy New Year everyone!

Oh, I liked it too, but I would definitely need a break before starting another one. It was my pumping book, so it took me several months to read while also reading other things.

  • That blows, Christin. Want me to choke her?

    January sucks balls.

  • tHE BEST THING ABOUT THE HOLIDAYS ending is we've already passed the day with the least amount of daylight.   the worst part is we still have to tackle january, February and march.  blergh

  • I'm only working four days this week, I have Friday off to go to the doctor for some pre-op work.  I still haven't decided if I will tell coworkers before my surgery, afterwards I'll tell them because it will become obvious (hopefully) anyway.  I'll be out at least 2 weeks so I should tell them something.  I'm thinking maybe I'll just send out an e-mail right before I leave telling them I'll be out for two weeks without going into detail, that way I'll be gone before they can start asking questions.

  • Pillars is a great book!  I'm trying to remember what happens to Martha . . . I think nothing.  I think she lives w. Jack and his family.and nothing happens.

I recently read A Place Called Freedom which I really enjoyed as well.  I was going to look for another Follet book to read and then I got stuck on the Lonesome Dove tetralogy that I'm really liking.   I'm on the third book Lonesome Dove right now.  I do enjoy Westerns, so maybe that's why I like them.

I think I fell asleep at 11.58 PM on NYE.  Yeah, I'm that awesome.

    image
  • You beat me, Tasty.  I was in bed by 10:30 pm on NYE - after watching a few episodes of House Hunters.  Lame-o.

  • He's adorable, Tasty.

I read Pillars a long time ago as well, but we are on 6 of 8 (I think) of the Starz miniseries.  It's really good.  Perfectly cast, IMO.  I don't think I would want to watch it right after I read the book, but it's definitely worth watching.

  • I loved Lonesome Dove.  The mini-series was fabulous, too.

  • I went to bed at 10:36 on NYE.  We managed to drink a bottle of champagne and a bottle of wine before then, and I'm pretty sure I had a whiskey sour to start the night.

Speak sister.  I was chatting with a guy this morning and he said "Did you know our next holiday isn't until April 22?"  Get out of my office, dude.

Christin, please complain.  I would be raging if I was in your shoes.

  • Today is stupid. Evie woke up an hour and 15 minutes before I needed to get up. She fell asleep two minutes before my alarm went off. I ran into a co-worker who was headed outside and he said, "Happy new year!" and in response, I said something like, "It looks like the rain has let up for now, hopefully you won't get too wet." Why didn't I say just return the "happy new year"? The heat has been off for two weeks. I know that mid-40s isn't cold for most of you, but I'm freaking freezing.

Lorne has to go to Boston at the end of February for a conference. I have no vacation time (thanks, mandatory December time off!) so I can't take the kids and go with him or just stay home with them while he's gone. My ILs are, very kindly, coming down to help out with short-term childcare while he's away. But...like...four days of me + my ILs - Lorne. =/

I miss my mom. I don't have any idea when I'll get to see her next. I hate living far away from her.

  • I am riding in Sam and Colleens sidecar. This time of year is the worst. The crappiest half of the year has started. I wish January, February and March could be erased.

I also start work next Monday. The first couple weeks of leave I would have paid to go back, now I am really dreading it. At least I can get back into some sort of routine and start running on my lunch break to reduce this fupa, but thinking about the fact that I'll only see the kid about an hour or two a day really sucks.

For less then ten cents a day, you can feed a hungry child.
  • Mashed?  Take more than 2 weeks if you can.  Trust me.  I was going to go back to work after 2 but ended up taking 4.  You'll feel ok, but you're going to be exhausted, and really need the time to develop all your new routines (vitamins, etc).

I hate being back at work.  Why can't I just win the mega millions?

  • Vicki, we need to start entering the HGTV Dream Home Giveaway. The house is AMAZING. It's in Stowe, VT, and I'm obsessed with it. http://www.hgtv.com/dream-home/index.html

It sleeps 14, so a little small to be the commune, but we could kick people out if we have to.

  • I've already entered 3 times!  That house is freakin incredible and I'm in love with VT. I would be ok with winning that house instead of mega millions.  I'm really excited about the commune becoming a reality in a couple of months when I win.

  • This post is just bursting at the seams with positivity.

I hurt.  On Saturday, I slipped and ended up skewering my right buttcheek on the corner of the stairs.  There is no mark or bruise, but it feels like a giant lump of pain.  Then I spent yesterday doing some long overdue gardening like ripping out ivy and stuff, so now every muscle in my body aches.  I just want to sleep until I don't hurt anymore.

Christin, you really need to talk to your boss.  She's running you ragged with all the working on your days off.  You should point out to her that you already had vacation scheduled in February, so if she has a problem with you both being gone, she'll need to come up with a solution other than you canceling your plans.

  • Vicki, I could take longer if necessary, I'm just hoping two will be enough.  I think my boss took six weeks so he should be pretty understanding if I need more than two.

I started entering. I would be happy to win just to get all the furnishings! I love the way they decorated it.

Shamon.  And with that awesome kitchen, think of how quickly she can churn out batches of cookies.  It would truly be a dream come true.

I may wish for this ahead of world peace tonight.

  • Oh wow, that house is gorgeous.  Although I'm totally side-eyeing the choice of dining room chairs.

I read Pillars and World Without End. Loved both!  There is a third???  What is it called?
