I think it's safe to say that plastic tampons are still the preferred method.

Also, I don't know if it's a cultural thing or what but tons of people in South Texas only use pads.  Gross.  Yuck.  Way back when I use to work and needed a tampon, I knew I could only count on my coworkers to have pads.  I never understood it nor asked why, but was always puzzled.  Like, why would you not utilize the invention of tampons??!

Odd.  I DESPISE pads.  In fact, I think I'm dreading the idea of having to wear pads for gosh knows how many weeks of PP bleeding, even more than I am the pain of the labor and delivery.   Pads are like diapers to me!

I like tampons during the day but like pads at night. They are diaper like but I freak out if I sleep over 8 hours or something. Paranoid about tss.

I am a hypochondriac about Toxic Shock Syndrome!  Once in college I was convinced I had TSS.  It was the flu or a virus of some sort, not TSS.  But I almost made my roommate drive me to the ER.

But I was a dumb asss in college.  I also once told my BF (now my H) that I was pregnant when I was 21 because I misread the pregnancy test.  I remember freaking out because a line appeared immediately.  Too bad I didn't realize that was the control line.  Ha.  I seriously believed I was pregnant for a full week before I got into see my OB/GYN and they informed me that I was in fact, NOT pregnant.  OMG, good thing I never broke the news to my parents.  Gawd, I was such an idiot.

LMAO!!!!!!!  I'm sorry - I can't help but laugh at that.  I would have died!  And I agree - good thing you didn't tell your parents!

  • I have never liked the plastic ones. Its weird, I know... so I stick to cardboard. I like being about to flush them...... Now I am going back to bed :) This tossing and turning all night thing is really starting to wear on me.

  • Oh and I just actually read through this thread, and no, "you don't just shove it up there"  and "no, it isn't actually a mess."

  • Morning ladies!

I like plastic better, BUT... cardboard is cheaper. Therefore, for the past few years I've bought cardboard. And sometimes, they really suck. Next time I need to buy tampons, I think I'll spend the extra $3-4 for plastic again. When I was young, all I ever used were Playtex gentle glide, and they were so lovely.

I remember back in the day when I was very young and only used pads. They were SO disgusting, ew!!! I would never go back to pads. But I do know some women my age who only use pads, they're uncomfortable using tampons.

And about the cup :) I've tried the Instead cup before, for TTC purposes, back when I was so hopeful and into trying lots of dumb remedies. Like anyone, I was afraid to try the cups, but I was able to use them with some practice. Although I never actually used them for AF. Inserting them got easy, and you couldn't feel it at all when it was in there. But removing it was sometimes interesting! I definitely had a few mini panic attacks!

Neither. I use the divacup or OBs.

I've been wanting to try the Diva Cup.  The only thing that's stopped me is deciding which size to buy.  I know they say if you've had a kid you should buy size two, but when I was fitted for a diaphragm 8 weeks post partum last year I needed the smaller size so I'm not sure what to do b/c fit seems integral to preventing leakage.

I'll probably bite the bullet and get one soon though b/c it'll be a lot more practical after we move since I don't want to have to buy 20 boxes of tampons and ship them with our freight.

Oh, I was talking about the tampons without an applicator. Thanks though! I actually just googled the diva cup. Can you buy it anywhere.. like a drugstore?

That is true, forgot about cost! (mostly bc it was 1 in the morning and I should have been sleeping). I prob would buy cardboard if I needed to save some cash.

  • Plastic, pearl or the new kotex you. I don't like any of the other ones!
  • What is the benefit to using OBs over tampons with applicators? All I can think of is maybe it's better for the environment, but I could be making that up?

Its kinda like being able to drive a standard car. You don't know when it's all you got and you have to do it. I remember asking a friend for a tampon and her giving me an OB. It didn't really work out, but I later learned how to insert them. Now I find them more comfortable as they are not as long as tampons or kotex.

  • I have friends who will never wear tampons and I do not understand why...I HATE pads and I'm not looking forward to them after the baby. I like the tampax pearl ones if I feel like splurging, but cardboard is fine bc they flush.

Are those the colorful ones in the black box? What are they like compared to other tampons?

This is a fun thread :)

This happened to me when I was a camp counselor. We were out on a white water rafting day trip with the kids and I got my period. I asked another counselor, who happened to be from Australia, if she had a tampon. She gave me what I guess was an OB, or a type without an app. I was too embarrassed to tell her that I didn't know quite how to use those so I just went into the bathroom and tried to make it work! I couldn't, so I had to use paper towels. I remember thinking "I wonder if that's what all the women in Australia use!" So now whenever I think of using them, I think of that counselor and that white water rafting trip :p

I usually wear pads at night too.  My Junior High English teacher was, I believe, the first documented case of TSS, so that always made me paranoid about it afterward.  I did get my period the first day of a four-day camping weekend, though, and decided to use tampons at night just because I wouldn't be able to get up and run to the bathroom and shower as quickly and conveniently as if I were at home.  Also my OB had recommended that I use pads at night a while back, so I usually stick with that.

Thankfully, I'm one of those girls who doesn't get her period every month, and I'm not even on BC!  :-)

    "You're the L and the V, I'm the O and the E...Am I speaking clearly?"
  • Tampax pearl all the way. I do not mind the splurge, comfort is a necessity when dealing with tampons!
  • I have to chime in on behalf of cardboard applicator users!  I don't mind the discomfort for like 2 seconds (when it is rarely uncomfortable).  I grew up with a super cheap mom, so she would buy the cheapest of every necessity, which meant cardboard applicators...so I just got used to it.  I kinda feel like I'm doing the environment a favor, too...which is weird because I'm not a "save the environment" type.

  • LoL, wow, what a great post this is!

Well, it is plastic for me!  The extra couple of dollars are TOTALLY worth it IMO!
