  • What, aren't there any bootstraps in Haiti?

    That is disgusting, seriously disgusting.

  • I'm sure people living in N.O. or Haiti never thought to just 'get a damn job'.  Fool.

  • And it always, I don't know, amazes me?  I don't know how to word it, something, how little people know about the history of Afghanistan.  If your husband is deployed over there, I would think you would learn a little about it.

But maybe they know it's been a constant war zone literally since the 70s, and they still think those people just aren't willing to help themselves.  If our country was basically destroyed by Russia, and then in a state of civil war for 20 years with a random occupation here and there, we might not be doing so hot either.

But we probably would have turned it around by now because we're America.

She is an ignorant person. Ignorant people do not educate themselves as a rule.  I am sure her husband is ignorant as well. And as many servicemen and women that are out there really assisting and making the world a better place, there are many assholes who I am sure use the uniform as a way to continue to be ignorant bullies as they always have been. I am sure her husband falls into that latter category.

  • I think life is easier if you don't have to feel bad for all the crap that goes on around the world.  If you can just use your privileged American lens to evaluate any situation.  If you assume that all places have things like running water, adequate medical care, readily accessible food, housing, etc, then you can make bold statements like, "[xyz] should just get off their asses and help themselves".

But these sorts of statements can only come from people who have never dealt with true crises...ie, not knowing how you'll feed your family, or if you'll be killed violently.

  • The Afghanistan comment really irritates me. I guarentee her husband doesn't see his time over there as helping people that won't help themselves.

  • Gawd, can't those lazy Haitians and Afghanis mosey down to the local McDonalds, Walmart, or Toby Keith I Love This Bar (and grille) and get themselves employed?

I'm not sure that's a fair assumption to make.

I was as irritated by the person that told her nobody forced her husband to enlist since we don't have a draft as I was by her stupid comment about him being in Afghanistan.

I'm glad there are men and women willing to enlist and serve like that. I will never be "USA USA ! I love Toby Keith" because there is so much that we do wrong, but I will always support the troops.

I wouldn't count on it.  I assume she thinks she's well educated on the matter because she gets her info via her H.  My friend dealt with assfaces all the time in the military.  He was the lone "crazy bleeding heart liberal" among a sea of ignorant doofuses.  I know not everybody is like that, but I think a lot of the lower level military is made up of people who can't see past the nose on their face.  Don't get me wrong, I'm still grateful for their service.  I just wish they could see the big picture.  But maybe they couldn't do what they do if they could see the big picture.

Maybe it is an unfair assumption in this case but it is not totally illogical to think that there are some idiots who serve in the military and do the wrong thing. And yeah, if I meet someone who is a frigging moron with statements like this, I am going to assume their spouse/friends/polar bear is also a frigging moron.

I support the troops. But I do not support every individual member of the military because I don't know which ones are the jackholes who beat up civilians for funsies.

That's very true. I wasn't proposing blanket support. Sorry if it came across that way.

    image
  • i still don't see how supporting/being part of US troops and being compassionate to other people on earth have to do with eachother.  As a matter of fact, if you don't want to serve the US army in an effort to improve people's lives in the rest of the world, why are you enlisting?

    image
  • I propose blanket support for the troops. I hear it can get muthafucckin cold in the desert at night. They need some nice wool yo.

I was getting worried there for a minute. So, I am not sure what you disagree with with my statement then.

They have nothing to do with each other. Her initial statement was stupid. I was just saying I found that one reply to be irritating as well which didn't really have anything to do with what Winged said either.

I clearly did not express the rambling thought in my head well at all.

  • I can't read that thread b/c it's blocked for me, but I think my UO is that, while I'm down for trying to help out Haiti, I think they are probably a lost cause and will just f' it up anyway.  They just aren't a real advanced society over there.
  • The reality is that most of our military is composed of undereducated, lower class kids. The rich kid who went to the great private school and got into a great college that mommy and daddy can pay for isn't likely to enlist to get shot at.  Added to that is the fact that most 18 year olds are selfish asssholes. I doubt many are enlisting with thoughts to improve people's lives, mostly just to have a job, maybe pay for college.  I'm willing to give a break to the kid getting shot at in a foreign country, not so much his wife sitting her ass on the internet.  Maybe watching some news, rather than playing on the nest/bump, may give her some perspective on her world view.
    image
  • There are a ton of racist, ignorant assholes in the military.

I have the misfortune of being related to one. I still get blind rage when I think of the shiit he used to put on my Facebook wall before I blocked him. It was like playing Bingo. Will today's comment be about the fudge-packers, the n-words, the n-words of the sand variety, or the beaners who should go back across the border where they belong?

  • I'd also like to add that my BIL is a captain in the Army and he's awesome.  I think when we're talking about basic enlistees, yes, they are lower-middle class uneducated pain in the ass 18 yr olds.  Not so much for the upper-ranked folks.

I would also imagine that the spouses of higher-ranked officials have enough tact to not say things like "My compassion left for Afghanistan with my husband."

Agreed.  My uncle would never dream of saying (or thinking) something like that.

I would think you wouldn't make it very fair up the ranks with comments like that.  Or I would hope.
