Classic Movies post

A friend of mine wants me to give her a list of classic movies to watch because she hasn't seen many older films.  I've got a few in mind that I think are 'must sees'

King Kong, Citizen Kane, All About Eve, Now Voyager, GWTW

Any other suggestions?  They don't have to be as big as King Kong and GWTW, but really good, older movies.

I think she's already seen Clueless.

Re: Classic Movies post

  • Roman Holiday is my favorite old movie.

  • Bringing Up Baby got Mr M over his "b&w = boring" hang up.

Arsenic and Old Lace is one of my favorite Xmas movies.

The racism gets harder to look past ever year, but Breakfast at Tiffany's is otherwise perfect.

    The Thin Man.

    It Happened One Night.

If she's political at all Mr Smith Goes to Washington.

Sometimes I wonder if scientists have never seen a sci-fi movie before. "Oh yes, let's create a super species of deer. NOTHING COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG." I wonder if State Farm offers a Zombie Deer Attack policy. -CaliopeSpidrman
  • The Graduate, Bonnie & Clyde and The Godfather.

For less then ten cents a day, you can feed a hungry child.
  • To Have and Have Not

    Suspicion

Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House

    The African Queen

    Topper

  • JAWS!

  • I'm a big Hitchcock fan:  The Birds, Psycho, Rear Window, Vertigo, Dial M for Murder, North by Northwest, for starters.
  • Roman Holiday is good, but we watched it the same night as Once and Mr M just about bawled.

Mr M is a soft touch for unrequited (unrequitable?) love.

  •  I would add to the "must see" list  Casablanca, Giant, Butterfield 8, Anything Doris Day/Rock Hudson, Some Like it Hot, and The Best Years of our Lives, off the top of my head.  Also, I am lazy and would just point her toward the Criterion Collection.

    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • Casablanca

The Thomas Crown Affair (not sure it's "classic" but i have to watch it every time it comes on TV)

  • I'm a little ashamed that my spectrum of "classic" movies includes only cinematic masterpieces like Swingers, Dazed and Confused and obligatory John Hughes 80s films.
  • I loved Marilyn Monroe movies as a kid. Some Like it Hot, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and How to Marry a Millionaire was my favorite. I'm a huge Katherine Hepburn fan. Adam's Rib, Little Women, and my all time favorite old movie, The Philadelphia Story. Laura is an especially awesome old mystery/thriller.

  • Desk Set, To Kill a Mockingbird

  • I'm dying to go home and watch some of these movies now. I think I'm going to have a classic movie watching day on my next day off.

  • Yours, Mine and Ours is one of my favorite light movies. Also, Singin In the Rain and The Shop Around the Corner. I cant remember the one that Sleepless in Seattle is based on--but the one too.

  • I adore the original Father of the Bride

Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House

This was on TCM recently - I totally DVR'ed it.  As an architect I found it fascinating.  :-)  I wish you could build a huge house in the country for $20,000 these days!

  • so you mean for REAL classic and not Back to the Future, Goonies, Heathers, etc? : )

I'm partial to West Side Story and if she likes a good foreign film, Roshoman is one of my favorite movies of all time.

This is the only movie I have seen in this entire post.

And now I want to go watch reruns of Bewitched because of PP's names.

  • Thank god for Mashed because up until that point I was feeling like uncultured swine.  Now I know there are two of us!

Brett got me Casablanca for Christmas because he couldn't stand being married to someone who hadn't seen it anymore.

    An Affair to Remember

Also: Manhattan Melodrama (really, anything Myrna Loy/William Powell), The Court Jester, His Girl Friday, It Happened One Night
  • Anchors Aweigh! It's some wonderful cheesy musical awesomeness featuring Frank Sinatra, Gene Kelly and Kathryn Grayson.

  • I've seen one moderately classic movie (I think).  Imitation of Life.  And MAN was it SAD.
  • The Women and Born Yesterday. Double yes to The Philadelphia Story (my favorite too) and How To Marry A Millionaire.

. I don't think liking old movies is a matter of culture. I read tabloids and drink boxed wine and like Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart. Though I guess I should grasp any credit I can for being "cultured", so yes, I am fancy. Thanks for noticing!

  • Guess Who's coming to dinner, In the Heat of the Night, High Noon and any of the Hitchcock Films - Rear Window, The Birds etc.

  • I misread this as classic moves post. I guess my "Yawn and put your arm around her shoulder" or "act scared and hide your face against his shoulder" aren't the kinds of classics you're looking for.
