Noisy- Hunger Games chat

OMG I am reading it now. I am partway through Catching Fire. Where are you in it?

I am at work but that sucks because I want to be home right now reading.

Re: Noisy- Hunger Games chat

  • Ooo ooo, I wanna chat too!  I just finished Catching Fire.  It has taken every ounce of will power I have not to sit and read each book from start to finish in one sitting.  Instead, I've been only letting myself read on the bus so that I can stretch it out as long as possible.

  • My kindle tells me I am 80% through Catching Fire. Evie was having a terrible night on Friday so I ended up reading about half of the first book while I stayed up nursing/rocking her, then I finished that on Saturday and started Catching Fire yesterday. Evie only got up once to nurse last night and I had to force myself to stop reading and lay her down. I like that while there are typical cheesy YA themes (everyone loves me?! all the boys want to kiss me? whaaaa? but I'm so unlovable!) Katniss is a pretty cool protagonist. I want to shoot squirrels between the eyes. Well, I don't really. You know what I mean.

So far I'm team Peeta, which probably means she's going to end up with Gale in the end. I don't dislike Gale, but I don't feel like I've really gotten a very good idea of him so far. I was hoping to see more of him in this book but not so much.

  • I really enjoyed the series and I bought it for my son for Christmas, he just finished and loved it too.

  • I hope to finish Catching fire soon. Stupid baby needing my attention.

Are you Team Peeta or Team Gale?

And don't tell me something awful like one of them has died or something and I haven't read it yet.

  • I love this series and will be excited to discuss them will people who will get the bigger themes and not be staging fake Hunger Games and such.

  • Oh yay! I didn't realize so many people had read/were reading this. I'm excited to talk with everyone about it, almost as excited as I am to finish reading.

Confession: I have a jacket with an inside pocket that is just the right size to slip my Kindle in to. I am wearing that jacket. And I am reading little bits every time I go to the bathroom.

  • Katniss is an AWESOME teen female protagonist.

I feel the same way about Gale. We got to know Peeta so well in the Games and didn't get that with Gale. And from what I can see so far in Catching Fire we still aren't getting that.

  • I feel the same way you do about Peeta vs. Gale, Noisy.  We haven't seen much of Gale so it's hard to root for him.  I like them both -- I just know more about Peeta.

I appreciate that this book is a lot less angsty "I MUST CHOO-CHOO-CHOOSE A BOYFRIEND" than other YA books.  Katniss is fine on her own and these boys are just effing with her plans.  I like that.

Fallin, like I said my son really liked it and even he was bummed when he saw Hunger Games merchandise in the Hot Topic window.

Where could I get a jacket like that?!?!

I read all three of these over my Christmas vacation, and I loved them, much more so than I expected to. I am Team Peeta.

  • What? Violent deaths of 12 year olds by 12 year olds don't inspire you to Ren Faire like play?

I was horrified by these books and the book board, for the most part, only wanted to discuss whether the 3rd book was romantic enough.

I liked during the discussions of Mockingjay and some people were disappointed, then 84Lauren was like FREAKING OUT on them about the author's choices. I'm trying not to get too specific so I don't give any spoilers away, but she was HILARIOUS when Mockingjay came out. Slow ya roll!

  • I had a love hate with this series. I think she's a great storyteller. I don't think they were particularly well-written. I am not sure they are appropriate for the under 16 set. Re: Team Peeta Team Gale my biggest problem is I didn't think Katniss was particularly loveable so I didn't get the obsession. Some of the end is awfully hazy to me. I could brush up if we all want to talk about the series for real.

Come on! You can't be that shocked by that though, right?

I think these books are great for social commentary. I don't read that much romance into them, of course I am not to book three though.

    THIS!

for the record, my son is team Gale.

  • I would be down for a discussion on the book once we are all done. Should we set a date?

And at that time, I want a full recap bethie.

  • I don't think Katniss is particularly loveable either. But she's strong. I can get loving strong.

How many teen girls lived in District 11 (or whatever number it was)?

I want to know why the main characters in these books all have retarded parents.

I'm sadly ALWAYS surprised by it. I know.

I agree.  Focusing on the romance so misses the point.

  • Someone let me know when we're going to have a mini book club-esque chat about this!

I don't think I was really ever dead set on Team Peeta or Gale, but if I had to choose I would've probably said Gale.  But I am a sci fi nerd, so the elements of the dystopian society and strategy of the game and the statements those make about human nature were way more interesting to me.

I was worried the ending either wouldn't be satisfying or it would be too contrived and cheesey to be believed.  But I was actually happy with how it ended, considering the alternatives.

When we discuss as a board, I want to play Cast the Movie Actors.  I read Entertainment Weekly's ideas before I read the books and two people in particular were exactly who I envisioned the characters as.

It's more than missing the point. It is searching to miss the point in my opinion. I literally do not see romance in the books so far. I mean, maybe one sided adoration and love reciprocated for the sake of survival, but not true romance.

  • I think this movie will be AWFUL. I don't see how it can be done successfully. Perhaps if it was made in Sweden (a la the Millenium trilogy) but the US will fuckitup.

One thing that threw me was that Panem was what used to be the United States, but the districts seemed to be tiny, like small towns.  I assume the population was concentrated and there were vast expanses of inhabitable land in North America?

Katniss' mom was clinically depressed, right?  I can buy that since I know of people who grew up with a mentally ill parent and basically had to raise themselves.  I didn't think the other parents were that bad.  Other than letting their kids go off to the Games, of course.  But I think the idea was that there was no way to stop it without getting the whole family killed, right?

Oh yes. I think Katniss' mom was clinically depressed at minimum. In many ways it reminded me of The Handmaid's Tale

  • I also thought (think, since I'm still reading) that Katniss' mom is clinically depressed. She said when Katniss was leaving that she wouldn't go to that place again, that she was sick and now has the herbs/medicine to keep her from going there again.

And yeah, it seems like if you don't let your kid go then lots of people die. That's how the man keeps you down, man.

Yes, AND they intend to keep it PG.  Uh huh.

  • I wish there was a map of Panem included in the book. Much like how in other books they have included maps of the areas they are discussing.

Given how small the districts seem (although they did say District 11 was huge, but how huge is huge), I wonder if something happened with the actual landmass that made it smaller.

  • PG?! But the books are so violent! God. How lame. I was imagining them doing it in a style like 28 Days Later. But that's not happening with PG.
