I think this movie will be AWFUL. I don't see how it can be done successfully. Perhaps if it was made in Sweden (a la the Millenium trilogy) but the US will fuckitup.

Yes, AND they intend to keep it PG.  Uh huh.

Even if they gloss over the violence to make it PG, how does the theme of kids killing kids for entertainment even come close to being PG?

  • There a fan created maps all over the internet, but I would really like to know how the author envisioned it.

  • I guess I meant absentee, or flighty, maybe? Like (TWILIGHT WARNING) Bella's mother, or the chick's parents in "Shiver".

  • I was guessing District 11 was California, since they're the growers. I was guessing it was spread out because it was supposed to be the Central Valley or something. But then it seemed stupid if Appalachia is 12 and the Central Valley is 11, because the district numbering system would then make no sense. I also want a map.

  • I thought it was weird that these books were considered YA to begin with since it is sort of a horrific subject matter.  I can't even imagine trying to numb it down to make it fit as a PG movie just so the kiddies can see it.

  • Dude, the HG series was like crack.  I got to the point that I was reading it at my desk at work.  I could not put it down.  I don't really think of it in terms of Team Gale/Team Peeta, because 'romance' was a secondary focus of the story.  And, I never really considered Katniss to be that much of a prize.  This is not to say I don't love her character...I do.  I will say that I adore Peeta.

  • Another thing about this series and a lot of kick ass female protagonists in sci fi and action stories I can think of is that there's often an older male father figure giving guidance.  Haymitch in this case, or Giles in Buffy (Boyd in Dollhouse, another Whedon creation), Blomkvist in the Millennium series, I know there was a similar character in Tomb Raider but I can't think of it.  If we're throwing Twilight in here (although Bella is not kick ass in any way), Edward is kind of an older, guiding figure, and I would argue father-like in his constant need to protect her.  I need to watch Alien sometime soon to see if my theory holds up.

Anyway, is this trend antifeminist?  I think it might be.

  • Yeah, the maps are cool but all pretty different.

ETA: the girl who made the 2nd map said she figured something "catastrophic" happened that screwed up the coastlines. I didn't link to the actual blog in case it contained spoilers.

  • I didn't think the landmass was smaller but that the population had been so devastated that there was a lot of unused land. I also felt like whatever happened had made a lot of previously livable land unlivable. Would really have been interested in knowing how many, if any, were successfully living off the grid.

I don't think it'll actually go down like this.  You don't get teenagers to go to PG movies.  That rating is for movies that target well below even the lowest demographic this book is written for.  I don't know where the PG goal came from, but anyone with any marketing sense will squash that in a heartbeat.

Yes to all of this, especially the bolded part.  The romance part is the least important part of the story to me.  And I love Katniss even though I don't find her to be lovable.

Have you ever seen that documentary Rate this Film. Or something like that? It explains how the US will rate a violent film much lower than a sexual film. Maybe it is because there is not much sex that they can get a PG.

  • I looked back at the interview with the director. It's actually PG-13 because he wants the 12, 13 and 14 year old fans to be able to see it.  I know the MPAA will give violence a PG-13 long before sex but still.

  • Soooooo...are we really going to discuss these later?  I have some thoughts on Katniss, but will save them.

  • Yes, I should we give it another month? two weeks?

Who needs to finish other than me and noisy?

  • I would guess I'll be done with them by next week, if not earlier. If those of you who have finished don't want to hold off on the discussion/spoilers, the rest of us can find the thread and add to it/bump it up as we finish.

    image

  • Well I guess I won't savor the last book like I have with the first two.  I'll finish it up by the end of the week so we can discuss next week if you want.

  • I can finish by next week. We are going to my MIL's this weekend. I look forward to escaping that into the Meadow.

No way.  Take your time and savor it.  Just post when you finish and we'll discuss then.

  • HG was like crack for me too.   So much so that I really had a hard time picking up another book for a couple of weeks when I was done.  I really never felt like it had to be Peeta or Gayle but always felt like Peeta was just a better fit for Katniss.  Also, the final book middle ending was hazy for me also and I had to go back and reread a lot of it.

Can't wait for you guys to finish it so we can have our discussion.  Maybe this is my excuse to go back and reread all the books.  yay!
