Sam's name post on 2nd Tri got me thinking about this. We are definitely having a girl and I have our list of names down to about 6 or 7 (ugh). My H seems really set on Claire, which I love as well, so I have a feeling that may be the winner. Anyway, I actually prefer the spelling Clare, but I'm afraid that it will be mis-spelled constantly. What do you think? Am I dooming my child to a lifetime of misery with Clare? Do I look like I'm trying to hard to be uneek?
We had a similar problem with the name Leila. I love Leila, but no one (including my H) says it correctly. Lila is a perfectly lovely name, but it isn't the one we are going for (sorry Sam). So it would have to be Layla. Which I'm afraid looks like a "trendy" spelling with a Y. Help.
Re: Baby name question
I do think "Clare" is uneek but not ridiculous.
I think Layla is traditionally spelled with a "y" (I've also seen it spelled Leyla). If I saw the name "Leila" I would automatically pronounce it "Lee La". Which, come to think of it, is a nice name.
11/11/11 = 5 years. Woah!
Clare looks wrong to me unless you are talking about the county in Ireland. I suspect she'd have correct the spelling a lot.
I think Layla as a spelling has been around long enough that I wouldn't think you were being trendy. She may get serenaded with the Clapton song, but that doesn't seem so bad. I would have pronounced Leila as Lee-la.
I love the name Layla a lot and would have it at the top of my own name list if it didn't sound so terrible with my last name. While I would pronounce it correctly if you spelled it Leila, it is only because I am awesomer than everyone else. I would go with Layla over Leila.

I didn't realize that Leila wasn't the regular spelling for the name. I feel dumb.
I also associate Clare with Ireland. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it would make me think you named her after a place a la Brook-Lynne.

I like Clare or Claire, I like the spelling of Leila, but i think she's be better off with Layla.
If the only reason you like Clare instead of Claire is because you think Clare is more youneek, let it go and just let the kid have the common spelling. But is there another reason?
On the other hand, Layla reminds me of Layla Kayleigh, who occasionally ventures into ho territory, so in that case I might go for Leila, even though there's a higher risk of mispronunciation.
I approve of Layla, having a baby name with a y myself.
I think Clare is not crazy but it will be spelled incorrectly I am sure. But, that is something I could get over.

Lurker chiming in with firsthand knowledge. Claire gets spelled wrong no matter what. I do have to say it's a great name though.
I have the "i" and have gotten Clare, Clair, and Clar (wtf).
I don't have any real reason for liking Clare over Claire, I just thought it looked nice. But you have all convinced me that it's probably not the best idea. Claire it is! I can't see or say the name name Layla without getting that Eric Clapton song in my head, so it may be a problem. I mean, I like the song, but do I want it in my head 24-7? Hmmm...
You guys are really helpful, I'll need to run the rest of my name list by you. I laughed at Brooke-Lynn. Sam, I was hoping some of the more awful names would chime in too. Maybe they know they suck?
Also, in Sams post these names made me cringe purely for the uneek spellings:
Averi Elise
Ashli Elain
Aubri Elana

My head hurts from trying to figure out what some of those names actually were.
And Sam doesn't like our girls name. Boo.
I like Claire. And I like Layla.
Sam, for the love of all that is good and holy, get back in there:

That is awful. Truly.
I bet her FUPA's name is Shane, like the gunslinger/drifter of literature.--HappyTummy
