maiden/married name decision ... any regrets?
Re: maiden/married name decision ... any regrets?
I disliked my maiden name because I always had to spell it and no one ever pronounced it correctly. I was also always at the end of the alphabet in school so I was picked last and I disliked that as a kid. I joked that I would find a man who had a short easy last name that was at teh beginning of the alphabet.
I did.
Guess what? I still have to spell the freaking name! It's Banks. How do you screw up Banks? I've had people call me Vanks, Danks, Anks... *sigh*
I kept my maiden name as a second middle name.
ZERO regrets.
I just sign with two middle initials. Its kind of fun, I think. My business cards have two intials and I always put my two middle initials on things whenever I can.
I got to keep my association with my maiden name (which I liked) and still get to have DH's last name. My sister fully took her DH's last name and she now says she wished she would have done what I did.
It such a personal decision that you just have to do what is right for you. And for me, this was the right thing.
I hated my maiden name so there was no question of changing it or not. And even though my husband's name fit my nationality better, I still think it sounds dumb with my first name, which I've also never been a fan of. I also added my birthfamily's name as a second middle name, so I have four names now.
So my only regret is not changing my first name too! My first name is completely Swiss/German and my other three names are very Latina. Humbug.
I did the exact same thing when I went to get my marriage license. I really love my last name and my husband's is a little tough. There are days I wish I would have kept mine or just taken his. On the up side, no one will ever have my last name.
Because my last name is a little tricky to say, my kids at school just call me Ms. Mel.
