Well then. That's not good.
So I came home from lunch to let all of the dogs out annnnnnd my house was broken into. They came in through the back either through a window that wasn't properly locked (though I swore it was, but they found the screen in our next door neighbor'ks yard) or by jimmyinhg the locked sliding glass door. They stole a laptop, an xbox, all of our watches (ten or so), and my spare key fob for my car. Oh and they stole my gymbag so they could more easily transport my stolen shiit. Nice, huh? And they left a hand towel on our bed. WTF? Dogs were fine, thank GOD.I'm at Honda now getting a new key and getting them both reprogrammed so the stolen one won't start my car. Then we're going to Home Depot for a new front door key since we think they stole a spare one of those too.I swear I don't live in the hood. I hate that these things keep happening in my (formerly?) nice neighborhood.I'm on my BB, but I'll post more deets later if anyone is interested.
Re: Well then. That's not good.
Thanks guys. I feel like a total drama llama for even mentioning this, but I feel violated and wanted to share.
They used our fire poker to try and smash our living room TV in and also tried to break our front kitchen window using it like a spear. Why would you even do that? You're already in.
SO sorry LB! I had my purse stolen once, and I remember what a naked feeling it was knowing somebody was going through my info!
Here's hoping there won't be any other problems.
"My 101 List - Updating asap, I swear!
I never understand why people who break into your house damage sh*t. What's the point? Get what you want and get out.
Oh my goodness! I'm glad it happened while you and YH weren't home, and the dogs are ok.
I'm more concerned that this is the second time you've had stuff stolen. Maybe you are an easy target because you are both gone all day long? Or maybe the neighborhood has really gotten that bad? Either way it is very scary!
Our neighbor's car was broken into a week or two ago, and I know how uneasy that makes me feel. I can only imagine how you must feel right now.
Everyone is gone during the day though! I mean, everyone around here works. So maybe that's it actually? The neighborhood is dead during the day and would be a pretty easy target in and of itself. I wonder how many other break ins for other people there have been in the last year or so.
I don't feel like the neighborhood has gotten bad. But then this happens.
Dude, I'm sayin'. Why does it get your rocks off to break my shiit with a fire poker AFTER you've already broken in?
This may be a dumb question, but what would an alarm system have done in this situation? Do they make noise to scare the guy off? I know they call the police, but by the time the police got there (I had to wait FIFTY MINUTES for someone to arrive - in my car in a neighbor's driveway because I had no idea if someone was still in our home) they guy would have been long gone already, no?
I'm honestly curious and don't mean to sound contrary. I've been BB googling them since this afternoon and I'm not dismissing the idea by any means.
I asked dh about the response time, and he said that if they ask if the person is still there and you don't say "yes," and you've left the house already, they don't rush to the scen the way they would if you said, yes, someone is here. (I think that's sh!tty, personally, but I guess when you're short-staffed, "i don't know" loses some priority?)
That said, an alarm would be an indication of exactly when someone was there, so they WOULD come right away.. But even then, you're figuring 5-10mins? Chances are they'd still take some stuff, though probably not rifle around as much, and almost certainly not take the time to pointlessly damage stuff they weren't taking.
Also, I think there are new laws now that you have to "confirm" a break-in (as opposed to someone accidentaly setting it off bec they forgot it was armed etc) that I know was causing controversy lately. I haven't done the research on it, but I got the impression that it would delay police response.
Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry! Thank goodness the dogs are okay.
Your stuff is probably headed to a pawn shop or various shops. You might want to spread the word to shops around the area to be on the lookout for your items. Legitimate pawnshops are supposed to record serial numbers and download to police all items that they take in for pawn. I am not sure if they are required to do the same for items they purchase outright though ... I can ask my dad for advice on if there is anything you can do to recover your things. He was in the pawnbroker business for about 30 years give or take.
How is it that my BABY is going to be 3?

Jodi made a great suggestion. When my FIL had his golf clubs stolen from his car they actually caught the guy that did it because he sold them to a local sports equipment second-hand store...and give his id - genius.
You may want to check Craigslist too.
I don't know about response times with alarms, but it's important to advertise that you have an alarm because they also act as a deterrent. If someone up to no good sees a house with an alarm and one without one, they'll usually go for the easier score. Who wants to deal with the attention a sounding alarm will draw regardless of if the cops take 5 minutes or 50 minutes.
Sorry this happened, LB. Not a consolation, but glad it wasn't worse.
Once again, I am so sorry
If you need ANYTHING, let me know.
As far as the alarm goes, I agree with Madisen & that's why we got one.
Ugh. That's horrible. I'm so sorry. That's such a violation. I'm so glad the pups are ok. I used to be afraid that someone would break in and then freak when they saw Brodie & hurt him.
Ditto the PP about the alarm. It's definitely a deterrent. People won't most likely walk out carrying a TV, stereo etc while an alarm is blaring. I know that our neighbors would definitely be looking to see what was up and know that something shady was going on.
Thanks again all. Just got back from Chilis where I gorged myself on some delicious fried shiit and margaritas. Moving on to a glass of wine now.
H is taking a personal day tomorrow to invest in some security measures and look into getting an alarm system.
No way are you a drama llama. I'm so sorry you had to go through this. People that do that make me SO mad. Also I would have been livid if the cops had taken that long to get there. If you need anything, let me know.
I'm so so so sorry LB! I can't believe how awful people can be. Do you know if your dogs would bark at intruders? I always wonder if that deters them. Thank god they didn't touch them.
Can you call the police and ask them to start patrolling your neighborhood more often? Or maybe call the HOA person and ask about a community watch program or at least signs in the neighborhood? I'm pretty lucky, we have tons of retirees and lawn-obsessed neighbors so they're outside all day but it still worries me.
OMG! I'm so sorry that happened to you! It is so unnerving, especially with you all going on vacation next week!
I can't believe they tried to smash your tv and window. What a$$e$!! If you need anything, please let me know!
