I'm so so so sorry LB! I can't believe how awful people can be. Do you know if your dogs would bark at intruders? I always wonder if that deters them. Thank god they didn't touch them.

Can you call the police and ask them to start patrolling your neighborhood more often? Or maybe call the HOA person and ask about a community watch program or at least signs in the neighborhood? I'm pretty lucky, we have tons of retirees and lawn-obsessed neighbors so they're outside all day but it still worries me.

Yes, they would bark at people and do.  But they average like 16 pounds between the four of them.  And they're sequestered into crates.  Not exactly a threat.

I requested more police patrol a year ago when my car was stolen and did it again last night.  I honestly don't think it makes a bit of difference.  We have signs for neighborhood watch program.

Oh, I just didn't know if the crazy dog barking would deter them. I like to think with my 3 dogs going nuts, people would be afraid of the attention the noise would bring. I live in a little bubble, perhaps :(

Do you think it could possibly be the same people who stole your car? Weren't they arrested? Is this something the cops would look into?

I'm not sure.  We mentioned it and the police are aware of it.

  • God, I'm so sorry this happened to you again! Fuuckers.
  • That really sucks. I am sorry that you have to go through this.  What city do you live in? I guess your dogs aren't guard dogs...

    Jacksonville.

Uh, no.  Guard dogs they are not.

ETA:  They're also crated for their safety and ours and strictly inside dogs who are never outside unsupervised.  So ahhhh... no.  They're not guard dogs.

Also, I think there are new laws now that you have to "confirm" a break-in (as opposed to someone accidentaly setting it off bec they forgot it was armed etc) that I know was causing controversy lately. I haven't done the research on it, but I got the impression that it would delay police response.

We knew this when we were looking into alarm systems. We ended up going with Safe Touch because they had an intercom system. The benefit is they can talk to us right away to see what's going on. If we are not home, they are trained to listen to noises and decide whether it's a break in or not. While someone  is listening, someone else calls our cell phone to notify us. So far, when we accidentally set off the alarm, they respond within 2 min.

I'm so sorry that you're dealing with this again :(

I also wanted to ditto J-Pancakes - that is the exact reason we went with Safe Touch as well.  I don't want to post all of the details here, but have a rep come out and give you a quote, they'll explain exactly how their system works.  I know nothing is fool proof, but it made me feel a LOT better having it.
