While it's true that a tumor may be seen as a test of faith, most religious people would still get treatment for the tumor rather than let it run its course and leave it 'in God's hands'.  So it's a little different from the point Alicia is making.

You're right.  I didn't finish my thought in the previous post.  I would like to see Ferdy's response either way.

  • okay -- for Shauni's Qu for  me death penalty-- not okay. I don't believe it is for us to kill anyone...ever. Yes criminals/muderers/child touchers are wrong-- dont' let the be confused. I in NO way condone behaviors of crimes against humanity. That said- it is not for anyone on earth pass judgment on another human being. However it IS our job on earth to show forgiveness. Yes we maybe angry MANY times over and that's fine- righteous anger is good. But when we start using it to propel out life styles...and fill our hearts with hate and vicious/dangerous behavior-- not ok.

for Alicia- just wanted to say a little bit of what eM said is true. God does in indeed give you what you can handle. He'll ever give you more-- He made  you He knows what you are capable of.  So a big fatty tumor or anything of the sort-- yes it sucks for us.....but in these times we can't always see God's plan for us and the bigger plan in general. God isn't always a tree hugging hippie-- we will get tested and thrown some curve balls that we don't expect. Do  you think it was favorable for me to lose my job the year we were getting married??? Heck no--- but I made the best of what we had- and even what we didn't. If tomorrow I found out I have cancer or some other terminal illness I think it would make me wanna cling to God and share my faith even more. Why? Well because, I'm obviously not going to be here that long so why  not make the most of the afterlife I believe in?

I just realized I'm the resident Religion Teacher......listen seriously---i LOVE sharing what I am passionate about--- but if at ANY time you guys are sick of it --- please just tell me. seriously.

Honestly, the idea of a baby resulting from rape being a ''gift from God" makes me sick to my stomach.  I'm not trying to bash Ferdy's opinion, but it's hard for me to wrap my head around.

It's a bit off-topic since the original post was about abortions to save a mother's life, but I'm not surprised it got a little more general since it's a pretty controversial topic.

Laura-- it's just something you have to try to suspend belief with. Yes a rape victim who becomes pregnant is not something that is great--- however- there is always a bigger picture that our human eyes can't always see. Let's say that that child - created from the rape- is a someone very important in the future. Let's say a doctor who possibly might find the cure for AIDS. Or maybe someone who helps to change women who have been affected by rape and or can help to spread awareness about rape and diminish the statics. But if you just abort that baby-- you aren't giving them a chance to live their life and be who they were supposed to be in the world. Just because one side of the parental units did a horrible act it doesn't mean BOTH did.....and it certainly shouldn't be taken out on the baby that was made from it.

  • Ferds...say for a moment we abide by the "God will give you what you can handle" statement, can't we, by that same philosophy, accept that maybe abortion is God's way of presenting a way out for some people.

I know a lot of Pro-lifers think that people who have abortions are all promiscuous sluts running around using vaccums as contraceptives, but it's not always that way.

I believe that for a lot of people, having an abortion was a painful, difficult decision, and probably the right decision.  Subjecting those same individuals to further psychological trauma just to fill some personal religious agenda is cruel.   If some poor girl got pregnant by an evil rapist, I'm certainly not going to add to her misery if she decided to abort.

If I had 2 kids at home and I had to chose between me and my unborn fetus...guess who I would choose?   You're right...thank god for giving me a solution.

  • Ferdy I know that's your stance, and why.  Nothing anyone says will make me feel differently about it.  I respect that you have a real, true opinion and that you stick by it, even if I don't agree with it.  If a rape victim gets pregnant and chooses to keep the baby that's totally her prerogative and I don't judge it, but if she would rather not keep the baby I hope she isn't inundated with people telling her it's a gift from God.  It's just a touchy subject.

  • btw, not to beat a dead horse, especially when I'm this late to the party, but I'd just like to point out that the majority (for the most part) is disagreeing with Ferds over the religion thing - as we have many times before.

I don't see anyone calling witch hunt here.   Know why?  Cause Ferds isn't screaming bloody murder cause someone disagrees with her.

Thanks Ferds for being able to state an unpopular opinion and not take the responses personally.

Yep.  It's possible for people to disagree in a civilized way.  And this is how it was in the past, too - the difference is how Ferdy chooses to react to it.  I know there are other people who feel the same way as Ferds in this world, it's not THAT unpopular of an opinion, and I'm glad she feels comfortable expressing herself even when people disagree with her.

This.  I may not agree with your POV, but I like hearing so I can try to understand why you feel that way.

Le sigh--- I feel like I will loose a LOT of friends with this one but I'm gonna weigh in. For me this isn't a political issue but more a religious one. It took me a while- but I am completely anti-abortion.

When you are pregnant- no matter how that happened....(yes rape is a horrible thing!!) that baby is a gift from God. And as the vessel for which you carry that baby- you have the understanding- even IF it's a totally healthy pregnancy- that you MAY lose your life. It's part of the sacrifice you make as being a mother. What government says about health care and what will or won't happen to me-- totally fine with me. I'm pretty stable in my faith and know that God has the power to make any situation better. Yes we have free will and I understand that. But God can make any bad situation and turn it good.....it may take years for that to happen (things happen in God's time, not our own).

Government bills and such can't scare you if you believe there is something bigger at work here.

I know I'm way late on this but didn't have a chance to get on at all really yesterday. But THIS. ALL of this. I couldn't agree more. I'm also a believer in "Everything happens for a reason".
