Relocating to Atlanta

Hello Georgia Nesties!

My husband and I are getting ready to relocate to the Atlanta area from Knoxville, TN and are wondering about the nice and safe neighborhoods.  His job will be in Dunwoody but we are open to living anywhere in North metro Atlanta.  Any advice or suggestions are greatly appreciated!  TIA!

Re: Relocating to Atlanta

  • Biggest rule in Atlanta, live where you work.  Dunwoody is a great area so I would try my hardest to stay there.  If you want to go north Roswell is also a really nice area as well as Alpharetta but again, I wouldn't get too far from his job.

  • I agree with UGA....we relocated here not that long ago and found that it's very different here compared to other places we've lived.  Bottom line, traffic is terrible here no matter where you live!  Even out towards the rural areas, it gets really backed up and what should normally take only 15-20 minutes, it can easily turn into a 40-45 minute commute depending on the day and time.  It's horrendous!  My FI works less than 20 miles from our house and in the morning, it takes 45-60 min. and on his way home, it takes 60-90 min.  It's that bad!
  • Love in Dunwoody, it's a nice area. I look at the traffic going from Alpharetta to the Dunwoody area everyday and I weep for those people. 400 is an absolute nightmare.

  • I would definitely stick to Dunwoody or Sandy Springs near where he works. It also a great location to live!

  • we lived in dunwoody after moving from NY and now bought a house in roswell and LOVE it!!! feel free to email me jennifersrush@gmail.com if you have any specific questions. we've been in atlanta for two years now and love everything about it (except the traffic!)

    good luck with your move!

  • Do you plan on this being your settling down to have kids house?  If so then I agree with Dunwoody, Roswell etc (ie. the 'burbs and OTP).   If you have no plans for kids for a few years and you want to be close to shopping, nightlife, festivals, etc then look ITP.  There are great areas easy to get to Dunwoody (no interstates required) that are affordable (parts of Buckhead, parts of Brookhaven, etc).
