Taken from WC: Chick-Fil-A and Anti-gay?
Re: Taken from WC: Chick-Fil-A and Anti-gay?
Luckily, I am not a fan of Chik-Fil-A, so I already don't eat there.
I wish I could quit Target, though. It's so hard.
I have never seen the appeal of Chick-Fil-A. I ate it in college because it was available, but luckily my palette has matured.
I'm not surprised they take an anti-gay stance. They aren't open on Sundays, which kind of led me to believe they had some kind of religious stance.
I knew that the owner is a Christian and while I don't agree with his anti-gay leanings it won't stop me from eating there, but I am not super political about things.

ETA: That's a general "you" not directed at the OP. And I'm not saying people who shop at Wal-mart are evil, I'm just trying to say that it's pretty unlikely everyone knows the intentions of the owner of every place they eat and shop.
No, I do not shop at Wal-Mart, for many, many reasons.
I didn't mean to offend anyone with my "matured palette" comment, if I did. I guess it would have sounded less lofty if I had just said changed or something. I burned myself out on grease nuggets in college and haven't had it since then.
I totally agree!
I actually do, and that is why I don't shop there. I also don't eat at Chik-Fil-A because of their anti-gay stance, even though I used to enjoy their food.
I know not everyone cares about the politics and viewpoints of the places they shop, but I personally don't want my money going to businesses who then use that money to further practices or fund causes I find abhorrent. To me, it's really important. But I've also been told I'm too political. *shrug*
I'm not planning to boycott them since I like their food, but if my lunch decision comes down to them and another fast food restaurant, their incursions into politics might sway my decision. I only eat there occasionally, but I don't like to support businesses that push their beliefs on me.
I know many other businesses have worse labor practices, but there's just something about a business being so blatantly discriminatory that gets under my skin. It seems to me like Chic-Fil-A is saying that gays are good enough to spend their money with them and increase the company's bottom line, but not for anything else.
While I don't agree with the anti-gay stance, I won't stop eating there. I don't eat there all that often these days to begin with, but I frickin' love it.
Plus, let's face it. Their employees get a guaranteed day off each week. I can appreciate that they do that for their employees. Even though I always seem to crave CF-A on Sundays. Go figure.

Bloggy
I haven't shopped at a Walmart in 7 years now, and I won't eat at Chick-Fil-A (or Cracker Barrel, which discriminates against gay employees.) I choose to vote with my wallet.
bummer.
I forgot about Cracker Barrel. I won't eat there either, but it doesn't cross my mind often since I never really go near where the two here are (except driving by on the highway).

I love ChickenFilA (what we call it in my household).
And Cracker Barrel. YUM!
I haven't eaten at Chik-Fil-A in several years because they have long supported groups that work against gay marriage. To me, working against equal rights for homosexuals = anti-gay. What one religion says about marriage should not have anything to do with what is law in this country. No one is asking Christians to enter into gay marriages. How is the marriage of two consenting adults any of their business?
That's the thing, Chick-Fil-A is not the ones who are working against equal rights for homosexuals. They are simply providing food at conferences, not anti-gay conferences, but marriage and other Christian conferences. Just because they provide food at these events does not mean they endorse every single thing the group does outside of the conference.

I'm not talking about this specific instance. Chik-Fil-A has also donated money to other groups who are working against gay marriage, like Focus on the Family.
ETA: As to the bolded, I think that if someone, particularly a corporation, is making donations to an organization, they should be pretty well versed in what the organization is all about and not make a donation if they don't agree with any of the organization's tenets or practices. A donation is pretty much tantamount to an endorsement, IMO.
We disagree there, but that's okay.
These organizations they donate to or provide food for do soooo much more than fight against rights for homosexuals. That is not their main priorities. Like Focus on the Family, for example. They provide support for marriages, divorce, single parents, adoptive parents, all parents in general, widows, money and finances, sex, raising children, abuse, addiction, emotional health, faith, and the list goes on and on (I got those from their website). Fighting against homosexual rights is not even close to their main priorities, or else they would list that on their website. Chick-Fil-A donated money to support all of these ministries they provide.

This comment makes me giggle. I don't think that would fly too well. Just like the chickens they use.
There are other organizations that provide support for these kinds of services without also supporting discriminatory laws. Focus on the Family donated $727,250 to the campaign for Proposition 8 in California, and then laid off 20 percent of their staff due to lack of funds. It seems to me that fighting against gay marriage is something they find a priority.
Chik-Fil-A certainly has the right to support whatever organizations they choose. Those of us who are concerned about equal rights for homosexuals are also free to to support other businesses rather than have our money end up in the hands of organizations we find disgusting.
I truly think that if you were to pick apart every single organization and their charitable contributions NO ONE would eat or shop anywhere if that is how you base where you spend your money.
And definitely stay away from hobby lobby. They are waaaaay coocoo.
Maybe. But I'm certainly not going to be spending money at businesses that I KNOW support organizations that I find extremely distasteful. I'm not saying everyone should be spending lots of time doing research on this stuff or criticizing anyone else for not boycotting these businesses. But when I find out about it, I put my money where my mouth is on issues that are important to me. (I also don't shop at Hobby Lobby.)
Critti, I think I remember that you boycott Target as well, yes? Give me pointers. I try so, so, so hard, but I get sucked in by the shoes and the tops and the makeup and my hatred for Wal-Mart. Plus, I drive past one twice every day. Help me be a good little over-political liberal.
Nope, we decided that we thought that the fact that Target is and has been such a supporter of the GLBT community and the fact that they offer benefits to same sex partners overshadowed the issue with MN Forward, so we're still giving them our business. I do try to shop at local stores first, but I can't stay away from Target either. (I get sucked in by cute the nickel free earrings and the giant containers of HFCS-free animal crackers.)
ITA!

While this may be true, I don't think that anyone should have to compromise their belief system to get some chicken or a lampshade. Some people feel very strongly about their convictions, and they are entitled to shop in a way that reflects them.
