  • I don't really have any one thing, but I remember when JJ and I were engaged and we picked out our first crappy washer and dryer and spent $500, he kind of had a moment where he was freaked out. He just kept saying "I'm an adult, I'm a grown up..."

The only thing that made me have to sit down and freak out for a second was our TV, but that's because between the TV, receiver, cables, protection plan, accessories, etc. it was a couple grand... for a TV!!!

  • When I bought my car in 2007. I was proud that I bought it on my own & didn't have anyone else co-sign.

I love my car, but I wish I would've done a little more research & haggling. Granted, I didn't get totally screwed, but looking back, I could've done better.

  • A sink for my condo. It came with a really shallow I replaced it with a fancy deep one. I also felt like a grown-up when I used my tax return and graduation money (when I finished undergrad) to pay off credit cards.

  • I bought couches for us in 2004 or so.  They are from Big Lots and I've since upgraded to better quality ones.  But, we still have them for extra seating.  I felt quite accomplished when I got them.
  • New living room and bedroom furniture. It was the first time we had furniture that matched.

  • My car.  I got it all alone and had no help with a cosigner or a down payment.

Our couch is the other thing.  DH and I got it right after we got married.  It hasn't held up as well as it should have but it was our 1st big purchase.

  • My first car....I was between freshman and sophomore years in college and my parents committed to giving me up to $1k and I had $1k saved up.  I found a little two-door Toyota Tercel that was about 8 years old for $1,900.  It ran great despite guzzling oil and having no working radio.
  • When we were getting ready to move in together we went shopping one Saturday and bought our mattress, box spring, bedroom furniture and living room furniture all in one day. I felt like a grown up because I knew we would pay it off of my credit card when the bill came.
  • Probably my Camry. I'd driven a car my parents bought through college and when I started teaching, my brother started college, so they passed the car to him and told me to get a new one with my salary. So I did. It was the only thing I could afford with it, since teachers got paid a beggar's mite back then, but it lasted 12 years, so I suppose it was worth it. Although I probably should've bought a used car and moved out, but bygones :)
  • When I had to buy and install a garbage disposal for my rental house (I used to live there but can't sell so rental it is).  It was weird and I suddenly felt like an adult.

  • When H (then bf) and I moved in together and went grocery shopping together. I felt all grown up because I got to choose the brands and types of food we ate. Lame, I know.

  • One purchase that sticks out in my mind was seeing how excited DH and I were to purchase and use our new vacuum. lol Brodie has a ton of little white hairs he sheds and we couldn't wait to try it out since our old one was so crappy. I remember thinking how different our lives had become.

I understand completely. Buying a Dyson made me feel like an adult. 16 year-old me would've had a *** fit that I spent $400 on a vacuum.

  • Surprisingly, the bigger purchases like cars and furniture didn't make me feel grown but life insurance through my work did.

again with the stealing of my life....

  • I didn't purchase this, but my sister & BIL telling me that they are leaving my niece to me & DH if god forbid anything ever happened to them was definitely a grownup reality check.

  • I remember buying my car and being like, "Wait, we can do this?  You think we can buy this car?"  We could, but yeah, we got screwed.  Lesson learned.
  • When I bought my 1st car in 2001.

  • When we bought life insurance, it was definitely a moment of "wow, we're adults now."
