Why did no one tell me that their oldest son got married? ?I do not have access to the tv stations that would tell me this information. ?I count on you guys.

Re: NER: The Duggars

  • I saw a few episodes about their engagement - so I guess I can't be in denial about it anymore ;). Never mind that she looks JUST like his sisters. It looked like he asked her in the middle of a Steak & Ale - how romantic (gag). Oh - and they are doing the whole " no kissing until married" thing - just hand holding. You should have SEEN the hand holding. If people could have sex with only their hands thats how it would look.
  • Thanks for the website! ?

Question: why are people who have been married a grand total of a month dispensing advice on how to save a marriage?

Because people who are super-religious know everything, and they are not afraid to tell you this.

lol - wait they were spouting off about this before they were married. AND before they even kissed or had a sexual relationship. Obviously 18 year olds w/o any relationship or sexual experience are the perfect people to advise others on their marriages!

  • Can you IMAGINE marrying into that family? One of DH's friends married the oldest of 13. Thats tough enough! I can't imagine marrying into that family...especially to be the first DIL.

    ?

    Bwahahahaa--thanks for the mental image.

    ?

Also, as far as the chaperone thing goes, How does a couple explain that they have a chaperone when, say, registering? ?Was there a chaperone present when he proposed? ?I feel like that would be awkward. ?

  • One of my bff's from high school just got maried a few weeks ago. She was anti kissing until marriage. I really really wish we were still close so i could ask her how it was. I cannot imagine going from not kissing (and really not even hand holding either) to having sex in one night. Talk about over load.
  • I think its just like a chaperon in the room. The engagement was videotaped - so I guess that counts. Typically it was just the younger sisters. Hes probably used to it. It will probably be weird when they have to be alone together, lol.

  • I had no idea that this happened either!

Isn't it possible to wear a "modest" wedding dress without looking like you're wearing your younger brother's wrinkled undershirt?

    ?

I have always wondered that as well. ?I have a cousin who did this, and I wish I was close enough to her to ask.?

  • my guess is honestly that they don't have sex talks. its more so just a basic anatomy lesson - if that? I think everyone like "that" is very unpractical about this area.

I think its typical for couples to not have sex the night of their wedding or even in the days after. FWIW, I can't say I'd blame them considering she wouldn't be allowed to prevent getting pg.

  • I feel like someone should give them a copy of TCOYF.

    ohh! mail them a copy!

    we could all pitch in!

  • Has anyone seen The Other Bolyn Girl?

I imagine it to be like the wedding night scene in there: fully clothed, very awkward, girl not knowing at all what to expect and really just wanting to get it over with.

  • Irish- I haven't seen it. ?Is it worth getting??

  • I'm guessing TCOYF would be against God's plan for them.  They're Quiverfulls.  They don't make the call when they have children.

  • Katie: I'm a history nerd so i liked it. If you have blockbuster online or netflix i'd definitely put it on your que. If not, I'm not sure its worth going out of your way to get.
  • or maybe it will be like that Kirsten Dunst movie where the DH is like 14 and doesn't get that he has to actually put it in until years later, lol.

  • The best part of the engagement special was seeing Jim Bob's normal looking sister over at the house to greet the new lady friend.  The kids were saying, "Our aunt is not....like us.  She's different."  OMFG!  Secular invader!

What movie is that?!  Maybe it is like dead presidents where the dude can't find the right hole.

The best I can explain it is to compare kissing to "gate way drugs." They viewed it as leading to sex. So anything that could lead to sex was to  be avoid. this included kissing, toughing the other person's arms or heads (yeah, I know, weird) or being together alone past 7pm. There was literally a book of rules.

  • I have been drawn into their new show, its like a train wreck I cant help but watch. Ack.

How can you possibly even get to know someone if you are never ever allowed to be ALONE? I mean really. And they already said that they will be having as many kids as the lord wants them to have. I say pregnancy announcement in under 2 months!

i consider myself a pretty live and let live kinda gal and rarely judgmental, but yo, this is downright creepy and unhealthy. not to mention no fun whatsoever. yikes.

  • Ditto gypsy.  They can do it if they want, but I can think it's creepy and unnatural.

  • There was a knot person who didn't kiss until marriage. ?Someone posted her bio, and everyone cooed about how beautiful and romantic it was. ?They didn't appreciate my comments (the woman wasn't on the board, we were just discussing her, so I felt no need to be polite when the subject wasn't reading it). ?What a weird concept. ?And for no reason whatsoever.

The Dobson crowd promotes "courting." ?If they're going to go all out anti-sex because it gives you emotional baggage, then at least they're beginning to admit that any relationship gives you that baggage whether you have sex or not. So, avoid the relationship, and you'll have a baggage free marriage. ?Too bad, you may also have a shitty marriage b/c you don't know who you're marrying.

Screw TCOYF. . I think we should send them a gift pack of condoms, sponges, pills, and foams. ?They need all the help they can get. ?There's a chance one of those bajillion kids will rebel, and I want them prepared ot do so.

A woman I was sitting next to on the plane last week was telling me about her young engaged sister and conservative Catholic mom. ?Mom told the daughter that they should just live together first. ?This woman was shocked because that's sister #5, and no one got a sex talk other than "wait, and don't use birth control." ?I guess having sister #3 and #4 come home pregnant woke her up!?

LOL, you're. killing. me. but i agree completely. look, i want to say to each her own, really i do. but i am also a realist and i know that you can't have a marriage without a relationship and i think it's damn near impossible to have a communicative, healthy relationship if you can't touch your partner.

physical touch doesn't have to be sexual. but i think it can play a huge role in communicating feelings in a relationship. so how do you go your entire courtship without that basic function then hop into the freak bed with someone you hardly know? seriously, i'm baffled.

  • my question was this: how do you even know you are dating? i mean, whats the difference between a guy best friend and a boy friend if there is literally zero physical contact.
  • Irish, do you remember in kindergarten or first grade when kids had boyfriends and girlfriends? ?They held hands, and they put that label on themselves, ergo, they have that relationship. ?Sure, they may only be play-acting, emulating their parents, playing house during recess, but they call themselves boyfriend/girlfriend.

The Duggars are the same way. ?Unfortunately, they're adult enough that they should know better and adult enough to sign the marriage certificate and adult enough to make babies.?

  • I think it puts an undue importance to sex.  Sex is great and important, but it's not the only thing to a marriage.  It's just one part of a serious lifelong commitment.
