Re: Where do you eat dinner?
wow so much information in this one post to respond to
DH and I almost always eat together, exceptions if I have a meeting or am working at a sporting event (usually only once a week). Generally on the week days that is at the table...someone earlier in the post said if she cooks it is at the table and I'd say that's a pretty good description...if we're eating subs or something like chicken nuggets it is in the living room, but generally one of us brings the tv table and food to the other...
We've only probably eaten different things (other than take out or going out to eat) 2-3 times...last week I made crock pot tamale pie and he made a valiant effort but he just doesn't like beans. Although sometimes I add a lot more veggies to my plate or make a side just for me...since the bulk of the meal is the same I don't feel like it is setting a bad example for our future children...and if he doesn't like what I made then he is responsible for finding something he does like
We do menu planning for the week and put a grocery list in the notes on our iphones, that way on Friday night when we go shopping (I know it isn't the most exciting Friday night activity but we prefer the stores a little further from home so we usually go for dinner and any other shopping then grocery shopping) we can just delete things as we've gotten them...
I don't always eat exactly what is on the list but it is such a good resource...
Two nights a week we try to eat salad, and we also pack it for lunch most days so at least once a week between our normal trip one of us has to stop at our more local store for salad mix, otherwise we try to limit the extra stops..
I'm also trying at least one (usually 2-3) new recipes a week, in addition to the blogs mentioned I like Stephanie Cooks, PreventionRD, Carrie's Sweet Life and Pioneer Woman Cooks and check them almost daily...I have a few others I check from time to time, and I have some awesome friends who love to cook and we share recipes a lot...
My big challenges right now are 1)reducing fat/sodium/calories and making more things from scratch 2)organizing the cabinets/fridge 3)convincing DH to eat more healthy foods
Erin - I appreciate you sharing all that info as well! I love that crockpot website. I have been wanting to make more use of mine but I didn't have a source to go to for good recipes.
Also, thanks for sharing those items. It definitely makes sense to wait until those items are on sale and stock up. I guess I should take my mom up on that offer and get a lesson in person so I can get my act together.
I'm pretty embarrassed that I didn't know any of this stuff. At least my husband will be impressed in the next few weeks when he sees big changes for our dinner/shopping routines!
Thanks again everyone!!! And I may bug some of you later once I get this whole thing started for myself. Sorry in advance!
I am totally late but I want to jump in too lol.
Jason and I eat dinner together every night, usually in the living room unless it's something messy like spaghetti. If we have friends/family over, we eat at the dining room table, and if we ever have kids, we'll certainly always eat at the table. We're just lazy now and typically don't feel like cleaning the stuff off the table (ie, mail, my purse, cat toys get thrown up there, books, etc) We also eat the same thing for dinner. I wouldn't mind making different things, but Jason thinks that's weird, so we always eat the same stuff for dinner.
We don't plan out our meals for every day, but we stock up on our essentials when they are on sale. We eat a lot of chicken, so whenever boneless chicken breasts are on sale, we buy tons and freeze them, then just thaw out two breasts at a time. We also buy a variety of marinades to use so it's not always the same thing. We do the same thing when ground beef is on sale, we buy a lot of it, and then leave some together and freeze it and/or form burgers out of it and wrap them individually and freeze them. We're all about freezing/thawing in this house if you can't tell lol, but we find it saves us a lot of money.
