ETA: and I still don't know what a perez is.

    Behold...Perez Hilton, gossip blogger extraordinaire.

I'm a little shamed because my nerd-husband knew at least that it was "some celebrity gossip site" or something. I guess i've heard of it, but there isn't much more in the world I care about less than celebrities...

I love Gaga and Twilight.  I think Gaga is incredibly talented.  But I also get that she's not for everyone.  I just hate the notion (not necessarily here, but in general) that liking pop music means you aren't "cool" or whatever.  I like Gaga.  I listen to the Current.  I love Twilight.  My favorite book is Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness.  It is like people (I know a couple people like this) who are all "Oh, I don't watch television."  Great, you want a cookie?  I do watch tv.  And it doesn't make me dumb.  Just like reading Twilight or liking Katy Perry doesn't.  Variety is the spice of life and all that.

My father in law, for the record that I love very much, has an incredibly old school way of thinking when it comes to music. He actually thinks that people who listen to pop/rap/hip hop/anything considered to be new music are less intelligent than everyone else. It's so annoying - because if he just happens to get into our car when anything other than "Singers and Songwriters of the 1960s and 70s" is on - he instantly starts crabbing about kids today not knowing what real music is (blah blah blah.) If he comes over to our house and we have "our music" on, we hear the same thing. "Our music" is just fine, thankyouverymuch. Our music is a broad range - from old school Jurrasic 5, The Beatles (he doesn't complain about them!), Queen, Jay Z, Lady Gaga, Adele, John Mayer, Outkast, Dr. Dre, Daft Punk... we listen to The Current, Classical MPR, Oldies, 96.3, anything really (except I can't stand screamer/death rock) and we are not stupid people just because we happen to like rap, hip hop or pop music. I've started to combat him when he complains with a loud "Do you want me to get off of your lawn too, old man!?" which quiets him down for about 2 seconds. He's lucky that I will jam out to some Peter, Paul & Mary with him, which is of course the "only real music out there."

    *sigh*

The only reason I didn't watch much TV is that I get total zoned out brain when watching it - and I basically stop doing everything else while a show is on. Bad for being productive at home... so I try to avoid TV so I can get things accomplished. :) Now that we've got Chloe, we've been home much more and watching TV is an easy pattern to fall into... I <3 30 Rock!! I wish I had been watching it since it started because I heard it was even better in the beginning.

  • I've always liked Lady Gaga's music but I became crazy-obsessed with her after seeing her 2009 VMA performance. You could tell the amount of work she put into that performance - it was simply amazing. I also respect the balls it took for her to do something so off the wall and crazy, in what was essentially her first widely-watched television appearance. After that I started watching her on other shows (SNL, Ellen, Jay Leno) and realized that she changed up the song arrangement, costumes, and the choreography for each performance even if they were just days apart. I don't know of very many artists who do that. She sounds great live. She is a performance artist. Her music is really fun and catchy and she's never boring - what's not to like? :)

Lots.  :-)  Haha.  We obviously all have music tastes that cover a broad spectrum of styles and artists.

Yes, that performance is what hooked me too!  It gives me chillls!

I can totally understand why Lady Gaga wouldn't appeal to some (many) people, but I really like her music, performances and her videos...

I think music is one of those "to each her own" things for me.  I love Gaga but I've only heard one Jason Mraz song, and I thought it was annoying.

Blasphemy!?!?  Haha.  Stick out tongue  You keep Gaga, I'll keep Jason.  Everyone wins!  Big Smile

LOL!  That is the exact word that went through my head when I read Minna's post!  Maybe it's because being from San Diego I knew his music from way back when, but Jason is awesome. However, I do admit that once he became "famous" his music has gone a bit downhill. But he's still Jason and that's reason enough to love him.

Now since this post is not about Jason Mraz - my 2 cents is that I don't have a strong feeling toward Gaga one way or the other.  I agree her music is catchy (though I'm not crazy about Born Again) but I'm not over the moon for her.

Josie- I totally stole that youtube link and put it on FB! hilarious.

    Oooh I totally disagree!  :-)

I think I like him so much because he's REAL.  He can just pick up his guitar and sing and I find it amazing.  I realllllllllly hate auto tune and lots of electronic garbage.  I like "naked" music.  :-)  I would bet there are a few artists out there who would sound mediocre if you just had them stand on a table and sing.  Autotune has ruined lots of music for me.  Lady Gaga though CAN sing on her own, I'll give her that.  Like in this.  I could get behind this version of her.  :-)

Wait, wait - I'm pretty sure we agree!  I love him for all of the same reasons! That's why I loved his first albums like Live at Java Joes and Sold Out... they are amazing.

Haha, ok.  :-)  I thought you meant you don't like his newer stuff as much as his older stuff.  I really like his newer stuff.  Eh, regardless, I think we can agree we're both fans!!  :-)

You can get 30 Rock on DVD from Netflix!  It is totally awesome from the beginning.  Perhaps over the summer when there is no new tv?  :)
