I think "gainfully employed" technically just means working for actual wages (vs. a volunteer position) (see, for example, this defniition: http://www.freetaxusa.com/display_faq.jsp?define-gainfully-employed&faq_id=1448)
So I would interpret a high school job as being "gainfully employeed".
Though somehow informal things like baby-sitting and cleaning my grandma's house for a few bucks doesn't strike me as "gainful employment" in the sense that this poll probably means.
I'm taking "gainfully employed" as self-sufficient. Otherwise, I got a job at 15 and haven't been unemployed since.
