Re: crafty ladies
I don't think it would be really hard at all. The scalloped edges is a type of scissors - those are maybe $5 I'm thinking or $10 max I'm guessing. You should be able to get nice cardstock like this either at like AC Moore/Michaels (think scrapbooking maybe) or possibly Staples/Office Max?
In my mind, the hardest part would probably be cutting out the letters, but if you weren't stuck on that font, it might be easier.
My thought is it would probably take a little time if anything, but should be fine all in all.
you could get the scalloped paper in different sizes at paper source (i know i wouldn't have the patience to buy plain & cut it myself) and you could get the letters at michael's.
this is a different banner but the tutorial might be helpful:

if it is going to be more of a hassle than fun for you, then it might be worth spending the money. could you get a generic one that you use for both girls to get more mileage from it?
Very cute but go generic mama! You do not need another 'stress' in your life! They have SS at I-Party...
But, if this is something you wanted to do, search Etsy, I bet they have a lot of great options.
I am looking for the exact same thing right now! We were at Michael's looking at material today!
I am not a person who does a lot of crafts so the special scissors/Martha templates would not be a wise investment for me. It looks like it would cost more to buy all the materials to than to buy one ready made through Etsy... so I think that is what I'm going to do.
I made this one for M's birthday and it wasn't hard at all. I bought a book of card stock in the scrapbook section of JoAnns, but them into the triangles, printed out the letters, glued them on and stapled to some twine. I know etsy has a ton if you're not up to making it though!
oh and thanks for all of the help, the pics and the site you girls posted are inspiring me- not sure if its inspiring me to buy or make, but i love the way they look
patty, i don even know what a Circut is? should i buy one?
this is a crciut

with the girls it may be something fun to actually have on hand!
We're doing the same theme for Indy!!! I think I am just going to buy the pre-made ones from either Birthday express or one of the other online sites or I party...I may check out etsy but will compare the prices.
Good luck...
