How old were you when you got your ears pierced? At what age will you pierce your (possible) daughter's ears?

Re: Copied from ML

  • I was 2 or 3 when I got my ears pierced. If LO is a girl I don't know what our ear piercing plans will be, DH and I haven't discussed it. Part of me says we would wait until she was old enough to tell us she wanted them pierced, and old enough to take care of them herself. But another (perhaps shallow/vain) part of me says we would do it when she's young to help with the is baby a boy or girl? question from strangers...plus, she wouldn't remember it then. I don't know...I'm thinking we would wait until she's older, but we haven't discussed it yet so who knows?
  • I got mine pierced when I was 6 or 7. I personally wouldn't pierce my baby's ears. I would wait until she was old enough to want them done and pick out earrings she liked herself.

  • At one time, I had four holes on each side - I got them at 4, 8, 12, and 16 years old.
  • I think I was 6 or 7. I would probably wait until my (possible) daughter was about 5. Maybe make it kind of like a present right before she starts kindergarten or 1st grade, if she wants them pierced of course.

  • Never had mine pierced. Neither has my sister. I never really wanted them done. I'm not much of a jewelry kind of girl, anyway.

If my kid wanted to get her ears pierced, then she could have it done when she's old enough to make that decision for herself and handle the consequences of it. That age could vary.

  • I got mine pierced at age 8. I honestly don't know what age I would do it at. I like that a baby isn't going to mess with her ears....but I remember at 8 how fun it was to go get them done!

  • Getting my ears pierced was a nightmare when I was little.  I think I got them done for the first time around 6.  Then they got infected and I let them grow in.  I got them pierced again around 8.  Again, they got in infected and I let them grow in.  This process repeated like 4 times before I got them done for the last time around 13 or 14.

My experience makes me think it's crazy to do that to a baby.  I remember it being so painful!  I probably won't pierce my future daughter's ears until she's old enough to ask for it and take care of them herself.

  • I got my pierced when I was 4. I asked for them and then was traumatized. Back then they didn't do them both at the same time. The lady told me I couldn't cry. When she pierced the first one I didn't cry but when she tried to do the second one I wouldn't let her. My mom said we walked around the mall for a little bit with my one pierced ear and wouldn't go back and do the other one until my mom bribed me with a doll.

I got the second hole done when I was 12 but I don't think I took very good care of them because they got infected alot. So I ended up letting them close up.

I got M's done around 4 months. I think my own memory is what prompted it. I knew if I got them done early when she was younger then she would just always know that they were there and she wouldn't have to go through what I did. Plus it was really easy to keep the clean and turn them.

  • I think I was 5 when I got mine pierced. If I were to have a little girl I would get them pierced as soon as I could. I think baby/little girls look so cute with them pierced and they will never even remember it happened.

  • I was 19 or 20 when I got my ears pierced - don't remember how old I was, but it was definitely one of those two ages. I was a little chickensh!t about getting my ears pierced and finally caved.

I'm not sure if I'll pierce our little girl's ears, if we ever have a girl. I might just wait until she's old enough to decide.

  • I was in 6th grade (however old that is-11?) I wouldn't let my daughter get hers pierced until she was old enough to take care of them herself (daily cleaning, etc.) so around the same age, I suppose? Maybe a little younger?
  • I had mine pierced as a baby and would probably have my own daughter's pierced as a baby.
  • I think I was 12 when I got mine done.  I'm with amanjay - I won't let DD get hers done until she is old enough to take care of them herself, which I think for her would probably be about 12 or 13.  I do not think she is at all responsible enough to remember to take care of them herself right now.
  • I was a baby when mine were done and I will probably have B's done pretty soon.  I guess I like that I am still in total control of her cleanliness and I would know for sure they had been taken care of.  :)
  • I was at least 11 when I get my ears pierced and I wish I had gotten mine done when I was younger.  I was the only girl in my class without pierced ears and I hated it.  I was responsible and never got infections either, so that's another reason I wish I could have been "a part of the crowd" a little earlier.  Plus I'd get earrings for bifrthday presents and such and could never wear them until my ears were finally pierced.  If I had a daughter, I would get her ears pierced as soon as I felt she was ready for it, but definitely not as a baby.
  • Mine are not pierced. If I ever had a daughter, I'd probably wait until she was in middle school to pierce her ears or old enough to take care of them (puts away earrings, keeps holes clean, etc).
