Poll- stolen from MM

What weird stuff were you forbidden from as a kid?

Re: Poll- stolen from MM

  • It's funny... my parents we so laid back in some ways and so strict in other ways. I could watch whatever I wanted to on T.V. and listen to whatever music I wanted to. I remember switching my Hooked-on-Phonics tape for Snoop Dogg at school when I was in 2nd grade. We could also have Hostess cakes and Sprite for breakfast... but no milk. According to my mom, milk would make you fat. But no saying anything "sucked", calling boys, or Play-doh for me.

  • The one thing that comes immediately to mind was MTV.

  • I remember my mom making me return my MC Hammer tape because it was too sexually suggestive. I was so mad. I remember I could watch HBO at my dads house only. My mom made wait what seemed like forever to shave my legs too. I often think about how much I was actually allowed to do and wonder/worry if I'll let my kids do the same. Everything from riding my bike miles to the library to playing down by the river, staying home alone, heck even walking to school. It seems like a scarier world now and I thought this way even before I had kids.

  • I'm not sure that any of it was so weird, but...

My parents were very picky about what I could watch on TV.  I remember being furious that all of my friends could watch "You Can't Do That on Television" and MTV and things like that and I was never allowed.  Same with PG-13/R-rated movies before I was old enough.

I also got in trouble for saying "that sucks" or using any other "un-lady-like" language. I still to this day have never cursed in front of my parents.

I was never allowed to have boys in my room, ever, and even once I was 17+, if I went on a 'co-ed' trip, I had to sleep in a separate room or tent from the boys. (Uh yeah, that happened...)

But like allobosc said, I rode my bike to the in&out and friends' houses, walked to school, etc. and it was never a concern.  It's sad that things aren't like that anymore most places. :(

  • Oh!  I thought of a weird-ish one!   My parents would NOT let me be in marching band or take art classes in HS.   The reason was two-fold...   1) They thought they were just "fun" blow-off classes and that's why I wanted to take them.  and 2) They know my level of artistic/musical talent and were afraid I'd fail them and ruin my GPA.   Ha!! :)

  • It was more my dad than my mom, but I was not allowed to wear nail polish.  I remember going to a make over party when I was in the seventh grade and coming home with nail polish on.  My dad drug me into their room and took the nail polish off for me.  My mom wasn't so thrilled about that, so she made him go get me some clear nail polish I could wear everyday and opaque that I could wear on special occasions.  Apparently he ended up getting over that though bc about six months later, he bought my younger sister bright orange nail polish...

I was also a no MTV child, but I'm not so sure that's a bad thing.  If I do let baby C watch it, I want to watch it with her so we can talk about issues that are brought up in the shows.

  • I was banned from MTV and R rated movies
  • I cannot think of anything really weird....except my mom went to obscene lengths to teach us to never get on a bus....we were right on a TARTA line and our house was a stop for the busses....we always had people in our front store stoop waiting for a bus. I was so terrified of busses it took a lot of convincing by my preschool teachers to get me on the bus to Childrens Wonderland for a field trip....and then the damn bus broke down, and I had a hysterical fit and had to go sit with my little sister at the front of the bus. She was SOOOO embarrassed and mad.

  • I forgot about not being able to shave my legs. This is totally gross, but I had armpit hair (about 12 years old) and my mom would not let me shave!!! She finally gave in when my dad noticed it when I was reaching into the mailbox and told my mom she was being rediculous.

  • I honestly cannot recall being forbidden anything unusual.  And with somethings...maybe my parents were too lenient:  i.e. we could watch R rated movies at a young age, makeup was never an issue (although I didn't really have much interest in it in 5th grade like the rest of my friends).  I had certain rules, but they were fair:  no dating until 16 (although the 'rents did consider relaxing that one since I had a thing with one of my older brother's friend's, no co-ed sleepovers (although honestly I don't recall anyone even having them), midnight curfew once i was older, etc.  I did occasionally get grounded - typically for grades and then one time I came home absolutely trashed (my senior year in high school).

  • I literally am a two minute walk from my elementary school, but I was not allowed to play on that playground either growing up.  If I was at home and school was closed, summer, weekends, whatever, I couldn't go play there.  I don't think I was particularly sheltered and I wasn't really forbidden from much, but just the MTV as I mentioned above and then I just remembered this thing too.  Oh and I had to let my mom know exactly where I was going on my bike, so I, being a total nerd, made a map called "Ari's Bike Route" and drew the exact two routes, in crayon, where I would be taking my bike and in what direction.  My mom still has that hanging on her fridge. :)
