RI Nestie visiting Maine

HI Ladies,

My hubby and I are coming to Portland next weekend for a "getaway" just us, no kiddo.  So, we are staying by the airport.

Can anyone recommend things to do, places to eat (fairly casual and inexpensive) etc?

Thanks!

Amanad

  • I'm not from Portland, but we love to walk around the Old Port when we go there. It's right on the water and has lots of shops and places to eat. I'm sure it has a lot more then that too, I just don't know! I think it's only a few miles from the airport. Sorry to not be more help.

  • The other things I can think of is for site seeing you could go to Portland Headlight.  If you are in for more shopping you could also go to Freeport where the outlets are and LL Bean.  In the evenings like PP said, the old port has lots of bars and also the Comedy Connection.

Sorry I am not much help either.

  • I would definitely agree that the Old Port is a great area for walking around, window shopping and seeing the sights. In addition to the places mentioned above, I would recommmend the Portland Museum of Art (www.portlandmuseum.org), and for reasonable restaurants if you're a beer fan I would check out Gritty's (beers crafted in Maine) and Three Dollar Dewey's. Both have good beer selection and pretty standard pub grub. If you're looking for a really nice meal out, I would recommend Fore Street or Grace- both are awesome! Portland is a pretty walkable city, so if you drive in or take a cab from your hotel, you should find plenty to do just tooling around. Have fun!

  • Thanks ladies!  I just noticed that there is now a Gritty's offer on Restaurant.com so that is great!

I also would recommend walking around Old Port.  It's very charming and there are lots of little shops and restaurants.  I second the Museum of Art recommendation - it's a very nice museum!

  • If you're staying near the airport, the mall is right around the corner and very close to the turnpike and 295.  So, easy access to really anywhere.  How far are you willing to travel?  Old Port, Freeport, are good bets. You can also drive out to Cape Elizabeth to visit Portland Light House.  There's a great restaurant along 77 called The Good Table that is fantastic.

It's a bit cold this time of year so any outside activities may be chilly.

Thanks for the Gritty's heads up!
