I think that the anti-semetic riot spurred on by Sharpton classifies as a group.

What current riot are you referring to?

Current?  I do not believe there are any riots currently going on.

    Bingo!

Sharpton just threatened "trouble" and protests in Denver if Obama wasn't nominated.

    And this proves what exactly?

Ummm, that Sharpton still has followers willing to riot.

  • He is well known yes, but his political obit has been written. His influence was there at one point but has been greatly neutered (tee hee) and you probably won't see him as a leader of the party again.

No it doesn't. It proves he has a microphone.

  • So he was going to riot solo? Or did you think it was Republicans that were going to back him up?

I would disagree---if it is a group of people, then it is a faction.  A faction, though, does not define the party, but needs to be confronted (ie: Rs confronting/challenging the racists within their party, Ds confronting anti-semites within their party, etc.).

I greatly disagree that anti-semites are a faction w/in the democratic party.

Then I would say our disagreement is our use of 'faction', not that there are anti-semites within the party (which you acknowledged).

As far as I know, no is trying to advance an anti-semetic agenda w/in the democratic party.

Announcing that "there will be riots" is not the same thing as actually seeing one through. Al Sharpton says a lot of things that most people in the party don't pay attention to.

  • Getting off the sharpton train, let's try another example (which I also posted above):

    Democrats for Life

One of the democrats' big party platforms is women's choice, no?  Do you think that Democrats for Life should just vote republican even though they support progressive tax structures and more social welfare programs?

    A much better example, IMO.

Then we will have to just disagree for I would say Sharpton was (and his voice is still one of the Dem party until they distance themselves from him, imo).

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_faction

    from the NYT:

"There's a small but vocal pro-Palestinian, anti-Israel and perhaps anti-Semitic faction of the Democratic Party,'' said Dan Gerstein, a former Lieberman aide and informal adviser to the campaign [Ned Lamont's campaign]. "It is a small minority but it is getting bolder, and even worse. There is a growing tolerance of it in the progressive community."

There are people in both parties trying to advance an anti-semetic, or at the very least an anti-Israel agenda. I don't care if you call it a faction, a group, a klan or a cabal. They exist and rather than pretend they don't it would be better to know who they are, what they're doing and how they're doing it so we can be on guard against (for those of us that believe it's wrong).

Really, a Lieberman aide said this? Okay it must be true then.

In any case being anti semetic is not the same thing as beign anti Israel.

Edit: An issue Rick Sanchez on CNN has been railing against lately. You are not anti semetic just b/c you don't agree with all the policies of Israel.

  • I picked a bad time to run out for errands! :)

MD, I think I do see what you're saying, and I totally understand how one party will rarely match every one of an individual's preferences. Myself, I was very disappointed to see Biden reject same-sex marriages at the debate. In my heart of hearts, I'm hoping he personally does not feel that way, but said it because he felt he had to, for the campaign.

So I get how their policies should fall right in line with the majority of Republican (supposed) policies. However, I bring up my point because it seems the R party has gotten cozy in bed with the Religious Right. Which brings up a whole host of (what I see as) conflicts to the LCR, a marriage amendment notwithstanding. Faith based initiatives that encourage a specific way of teaching in schools, Supreme Court candidates to decide on privacy issues (remember the Texas case regarding sodomy?) etc. It's so much more that just same-sex marriage!

And the fact that their donations get returned regularly just makes my stomach turn. Why do they keep punishing themselves? It's like Charlie Brown and the football.

But I can see your point of view.
