For ladies who paint their nails...

How do you get the polish to stay on and not get chipped or blimished??!!

I love the look of my finger nails being painted, I tried to paint them this weekend and within one day they looked like CRAP!! I painted two coats and put a clear coat on top for shine

Is it the polish I'm using? Just cheap brands from Walmart or Target

Should I be buying OPI or something similar, does that make a difference?

Re: For ladies who paint their nails...

  • This is my normal routine(after the trim/file):

1.) Buff, buff, buff, and then buff a little more.

2.) Wash off buffing "dust" and moisturize.  Used a tiny bit of nail polish remover to get the lotion off my nails.

3.) Base coat - I usually use a protein/strengthener.  It helps keep them strong and saves you that icky yellow nail tint

4.) Here is where I am weird - 1 coat color, 1 coat clear, 1 coat color, 1 coat clear.  I just found that it doesn't chip as much

  • I found a nail place that does manicures for $10 so every Saturday that is where I am. It lasts a week so I'm usually good to go Saturday to Saturday.

    Where?

  • I use two coats of color but I put the first coat on all ten and then go back and put on the second coat.  After that, I put on a fast-drying and then my top coat.  Then, I won't do anything but play on the computer or watch TV for at least an hour.
  • Ugh, I gave up. I had the same issues, Chelsea. I hate chipped nails.

I have actually heard if you DON'T put a clear coat on first, it lasts longer. That's what I do with my toes, an it works well. I use OPI polish, and something called "Chip Skip" thats not a coat, it dries instantly but it really helps. You can buy it at Sally's. It's also made by OPI.

Renee - you can't just post that and not tell us where!  :)

  • My nail salon does a typical manicure for $10 also. That's pretty average.

  • Oh really?  Why did I think it was so much more?  Probably because I get a french manicure, which lasts like 2 days and costs like $20.  ::sigh::
  • Ohhhh. Yes. That's why.

I love the place I go to. Off MacArthur. Went there for my pre-wedding day nails too.

Although, after last Monday's pedicure I seem to have acquired an ingrown toenail :(. Only had one other one in my life. I don't think I'll be having that lady again.

  • Summer what salon do you go to off MacArthur and are the pedicures also $10?
  • Shellac is unmazing!!!!  It's about $30ish but it was last for about 3 weeks.  I love it, I did it for my wedding and it looked great for almost a month! I usually go to Legend Nails on Beltline and tollway in addison for it.

Is Shellac where you dry your nails under a UV light?

    yes.  in between each coat

  • Thanks for the recs everyone...but I would prefer to still do it at home, since even $10 a week adds up quickly!!! (to the tune of $520 a year!)

Maybe at home nails are just hopeless Crying

Wow.. never thought of it that way!

Well I second "Chip Skip" by OPI then!

  • You could paint them a greige color and then it won't be so noticeable when they chip.
  • Sorry guys for posting and running. The place I found is a tiny little hole in the wall in Irving/Las Colinas where I live. It's off of O'Connor and in between Northgate and Rochelle. It's clean and the ladies are very friendly!
  • I love painting my nails but I too hate the chipping nails and I dont really like going to a nail salon. Ive tried NARS nail polish. Its a bit pricey but the color lasts and they have really pretty colors.

  • Melissa- It's called Luxe Nails and no, the cheapest pedi is $25, plus tip.

I really don't like going to salons, so I don't get manicures unless I have a special occasion. Last time I had one was my wedding.

And I try and do my own pedicures too, but I got lazy last week, and really wanted to relax. So, I caved.

They creep me out, honestly. I am paranoid about getting staph or something. I know they all "say" they clean their stuff, but you hear the horror stories. So, obviously they don't all clean them.

ETA: And Chelsea, I have to agree, I can't justify spending $40 a month on manicures when I could do it at home. It's not a necessity for me. But, I guess everyone has different priorities. I look at it much like you.

This seems to be a running theme between the two of us (having such similar opinions)....I'm thinking we need to hang out in real life! haha

  • This might sound bad but, whatever.  When Bill and I first began dating, I went to get manicures nearly every week.  I love getting them but now I just can't find the time to go that often.  Same with pedicures.  I have also been known to get a pedicure every couple of weeks during the summer.  Mainly if I'm bored.

I definitely remember that from TK! :) I'm just cheap, that's my problem. Like I was telling Lacey, I wouldn't have ever bought the Clarisonic. It was a gift from my mom. Now if it's a great pair of shoes on the other hand......

    ;)

Not bad at all, Julie. A lot of women are like that. Like I said, it's all about what you value you know? Everyone is different. Remember what we were talking about on Saturday? You like handbags...I'm a shoe gal ;)

I just don't care what my nails look like enough to spend that kind of money every month. Maybe if we were loaded, and had the money to blow, it'd be another story. But, we aren't. And we don't.

  • Oh, I would still do it now (mainly because there aren't any purses that I'm after) but I just don't want to take the time.  I feel I am turning into a slug.
  • haha-blame it on being an OMH.

  • I'm with you guys I usually only get pedicures done for special events, like my husband's birthday dinner this weekend. I've only had a manicure done once and that was for my wedding. But I do get my eyebrows threaded pretty often.
  • Melissa- I heard from a friend that eyebrow threading is a lot better than waxing. Do you feel that way?

  • I don't get regular manicures, but I do get regular pedicures during the summer.
  • I totally agree Shellac is pricy, but its good for special occastions and its nice to see it last.

  • I do believe threading is better than waxing.
