Caramel or Carmel?

Our local McDonalds has a big huge sign that scrolls different mesages.  Right now, it's advertising "carmel mochas" - I don't believe that is a proper spelling, but anyway...it got me thinking...

Do you say caramel or carmel?

And another one - pee-can or pecan?

Any other ones you can think of?

(I realize this is a totally random post)

Re: Caramel or Carmel?

  • I say caramel...but I always pronounce additional letters that other people don't necessarily pronounce.  Like elementary - when I say it, you hear every letter, unlike most everyone else I know.

I also say pecan (when I hear pee-can, all I can think of is When Harry Met Sally - Sally repeats after Harry - "But I would be proud...to partake...in your pecan pie").

  • Yes that's definitely incorrect spellingwise...

    I say carmel and pee-can

    What about:

    Orange - Orange or Arnge?

    Lever - Lee-ver  or with a softer e - leaver?

(I realize I suck at writing things phonetically)

  • It's funny...some of these (like milk vs. melk) would never have occurred to me being from where I am from.  I think accents in various parts of the country bring out interesting differences.

My mom pronounces onion with a "g" - like ong-ion.  It's weird.  If anyone is from upstate NY - is that familiar to you?  No one else in our family does it (and they're all from there), so I think it's just my mom!

Becca - don't worry - my phonetic spelling of pecan was just pecan!

  • Caramel and pee-can.  I always associate, right or wrong, pecan with the American south.

Funny...I always thought the opposite.  And I only think this because I've known a few people from here (Texas) that say pee-can...and I figure I only say pecan because my parents do, and they're from NY.

Then again, my husband, who does have a bit of a Texas accent, says pecan as well.  So there goes my theory!

Another one - most people in Texas call soda "Coke" - even if they're referring to Dr. Pepper, Sprite, or any other sort of soda.  I say soda, but I know this one has huge regional differences...

@Megan:  A lot of people from Oklahoma also just generalize it with "coke" and also instead of like tissue, we'll say Kleenex or whatever.

I just thought of days of the week too.  My great aunt always said mon-dee, toos-dee, wends-dee, thurs-dee, fri-dee, satur-dee, sun-dee.

We also have some towns in Oklahoma that most people wouldn't know how to pronounce.  Like, we have a Miami, but it's pronounced My-Am-Uh.

  • I think it's definitely regional.

A few years ago I did a road trip to MS for Katrina Relief and we stopped at McDonalds.  A girl in my group (from Northern WI) asked for a "beg" (instead of bag, another bad phonetic speller here) and it took 5 minutes and 2 workers to realize she was saying "bag". Lol

MIL says "warsh" and it drives me crazy for some reason.  Then again, his family also calls a vaccuum a "sweeper".

I've heard the "Coke" generalization thing also, although not commonly in the mid-west.

I do make fun of DH, his family is from the mid-west and so every so often he'll say begel instead of bagel.  Then again he makes fun of me for saying

    q-pons instead of coupons.

  • I say caramel, pee-can, wrash (it's awful, I know!), q-pon, and arnge.  Apparently I also say ink pen instead of just pen and I pronounce 'pen' and 'pin' the same way and it drives Jason nuts but I really can't hear the difference.

Yeah, people use Kleenex a lot instead of tissue.  I used to, but now I say tissue.  I don't know what changed!

And My-am-uh - that's silly!  Houston has a suburb called Humble, but the H is silent, so it's pronounced umble.  I always though that was silly, too!

    Begel.  That's funny.

I agree with everyone else and say q-pons is the appropriate way to pronounce it!  Coopons has always bugged me for some reason (sorry Kearstin!).

In my opinion, I say all of these correctly...haha!:
    wash, bag, milk, orange, leh-ver, wah-ter, q-pon, awl-mond

Oh - and I say drawer (as in the thing in your kitchen that you keep utensils in) like draw-er, not droor.  Apparently that's wrong.

My husband says cimanon and cimena and I think it's adorable.

  • Ha...I'm a "coo-pawn" girl!

And I've definitely heard something like "beg-gull" around here on the usual

  • Some stuff is definitely regional. DH is from New Jersey and he says "Sangwich" (sandwich) and "Wuter" (water). I make fun of him so much for it, and one time a waiter even said "wait what do you want?" when he ordered water. I cracked up.

side note: it's really funny to just scroll through here and see everyone trying to type out how they say things. I just LOLed.

  • car-mul

puh-cawn (actually, I have an odd hybrid-ish accent, and it usually comes out more like pick-cahn)

    wash

    milk

orng (again, an odd one...when I say it, it's more Or-inge)

    leh-ver

    wah-ter

And I do say "coo-pahn", but not "coopin"...that only reminds me of the Ron White monologue:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ovk4JNw3hAk

Another one that sets my teeth on edge is February.  I can't stand it when people say "Febyooary".  There is an "R", people!  It's Febrooary.

Tisha, the Oklahoma town that used to just kill me was Chickasha.  It was forever and a day before I could remember to call it Chick a shay.  I always wanted to say Chick a shaw, and when my dad came to visit, he called it Chi Kasha.

ha, now I'm saying these in my head wondering if it's right.

My hometown is often mispronounced.  It's Moline, "Mo-lean", but often said "Mo-line" which makes it sounds hickish, which is funny bc in some aspects it is now compared to Chicago
