Anyone work in Payroll?

I have an Accounting degree and have worked in public accounting as well as worked as a bookkeeper for various companies. I am job searching and considering payroll jobs in larger companies. My biggest thing is I don't want to get too bored at a job and also want to stay very busy. I'm worried that it would be just data entry and I would get bored fast. But I am at the point where I would rather have a boring job that kept me busy all day than a job where I barely had enough work to get me through 1 day.

Re: Anyone work in Payroll?

  • I'm about to graduate with my degree in accounting, and my mom has worked in accounting 15+yrs. She cannot stand doing payroll. I personally wouldn't ever go into it like you said, it'd get boring fast! Maybe you should look for a job that has a little more involvement--other than payroll. I know you said you worked in public accounting, my mom did for awhile too and she said that she went from a job that did thousands of journal entries to one that does maybe a 100 and she was bored all the time. So maybe just stick with larger more in depth companies??  Whatever you end up doing good luck!!

  • I'm a CPA and I've done bookkeeping work & public accounting work. At my old firm I never did any payroll, but I do some at my new firm & I HATE it! I wouldn't want to do payroll everyday, but if it was all I could find for a job I'd do it...Good luck whatever you end up doing!
  • Several years ago (just over 10) I worked in the payroll department of a very large company.  No degree required.  I don't think you'd find it challenging it all...it really is  a bunch of data entry and everything is automated these days.

  • I think you'd be bored doing payroll if you have an accounting degree.  I am a full charge bookkeeper and do the payroll for our company. It doesnt take a rocket scientist to do my job.
