I found myself in this position earlier this week. I ended up saying 'aww, she has such pretty blue eyes'. I later found out that she has a touch of DS, and felt bad for thinking she wasn't that cute.

    Hmm

How do you have a touch of a chromosomal abnormality?

Ummm. I don't know really. That's what I was told. The baby is 13 months old. Slumps to the side, doesn't crawl or walk, doesnt really look at you. Very odd behavior. I'm not 100% sure it's DS, but something seems 'off' KWIM?

Sounds like she definitely has a developmental delay. Have they taken her to be evaluated? "A touch of DS" doesn't sound like a real diagnosis.

Yeah, there's no such thing as a "touch of DS." You either have it or you don't. Some people with DS show their "symptoms" more than others, though, so maybe that's what they mean. Their looks or level of mental retardation can vary greatly. It may also be a developmental delay or some type of autism.

I'll admit that I don't know much about DS.
  • A girl I went to college with had an ugly baby. She and her husband are not bad looking people but she got a very awkward.combo of their features. I also focus on the positives like "what a cute smile!" She has grown into her face now and is cuter than she was.

You can't have a touch of Downs. Maybe he had something else?

ETA: Should've read comments before I posted since other people touched on this. Also -  now that I've read the "symptoms" this sounds like a possibility of autism. Whatever the case, I hope the parents get their little girl the help she needs since she clearly has some form of developmental delay.

  • All I keep thinking of as I read this is FRIENDS:

Rachel- Which of these babies do you think is the ugliest?...scene continues...

    Ross- Ugly Baby judges you!

Also, my brother was an ugly baby and my dad and stepmom would freely admit it. for like the first six months of his life he was really skinny, very red all the time and had no hair. Then he started to fill out and he turned into the cutest, bright blonde, blue eyed, curly haired toddler you've ever seen. But everyone in our family freely admits that Nick was never going to win the prize for cutest baby in our family, including Nick!
