Holy crap.

My half sister, who is 21, is getting married on May 9th.  This is insane for a number of reasons.  Not only does it make me feel old, but a year ago she was engaged to a different dude, only to cheat on him (with her current fiance) while he was away at basic training.  They've been together maybe 6 months, and got engaged two weeks ago.

I'm just shaking my head at this mess.

  • Also, he is 30.

  • The two engagement things in a year would be a red flag. Age not so much. Im 21 and Toby is 30, it makes no difference.

ETA: The 2 week engagement is a big head turner also. Are they trying to hide something or get away with something?

Like next monday they are getting married?!?!  If so that is super quick.

  • Yes, next Monday.

Jess - I think there are definitely people who make the age difference work, but in general I find this situation odd.  She was barely out of high school when she got engaged the first time, and she was 20 when she cheated on her then-fiance with her now-fiance.  I think that a 30 year-old should know better than to get involved in that sort of thing.

  • So...are you starting a pool for how long it lasts?  If so, I call a year.
Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker For two people in a marriage to live together day after day is unquestionably the one miracle the Vatican has overlooked. PersonalMilestone
  • I was sort of wondering if she might be pregnant.  I know that's not very fair and people have other reasons for short engagements, but that is SUCH a short engagement, particularly since they haven't been dating long.

They met at work, so they haven't known each other much longer than they've been dating (so it's not like they were good friends beforehand).

  • Ya it definitly doesn't look like a good situation I wasn't trying to say it was (sorry if it came across that way). She's already been engaged twice and wedding in 2 weeks is just no bueno.

I ditto the pool! I've got 8 months.

LOL sure!  I think a year is being generous though...I call 6 months.

Oh no, I didn't think you were saying it was, I was just trying to clarify that I don't judge the 21/30 year-old thing by itself.

    6 months

One of my neighbors was in this situation recently. She was engaged, they broke up, she dated another guy, they got back together - engaged, got married, he left for basic a week later, she cheated on him while he was gone, and now they are divorced. It didn't even last 5 months. I just don't get it.

I feel like these girls need to figure out who they are and spend some time away from boys.

  • Sorry, I already called 6 months!!  LOL.

I agree, she just doesn't understand relationships and needs to take a break and find out who she is.  She just got a 'real' job, and I think maybe if she was on her own she could sort some things out.

  • Darn, I was going to say 6 months too!  I smell something fishy...

  • I don't give it long at all. I give it 7 months, tops.

She reminds me of a friend from HS. This friend, we'll call her L, married her HS sweetheart, J1 (they dated 6-7 years before getting married) and just got a divorce in November. Well, J1 and my ex from HS (J2) were best friends i.e. J2 was BM for J1 & L's wedding. Well, J1 cheated (I don't know if physically but definitely emotionally) and that's why they got divorced. So J2 didn't agree with J1 and was there for L. Long story short, J2 and L are not engaged and are getting married in July.

Granted, they've known each other for YEARS but only dated less than 6 months and have a 3 month engagement and she hasn't been just "her" since 9th grade.

I get some people always have to have someone but geez, figure out who you are first.

  • Man, that sounds about like my sister.  She's a bit of a trainwreck and had a baby, a couple of fiances, cheated on boys in and out of my mom's house for the past couple of years, and she's only 22.

How are her parents taking the news?  Anyone trying to talk some sense into her, or everyone's just shocked?

Wowza, what a mess!  I hope for her sake that she's not pg.

  • Sounds like a bad situation all around.  I say she's preggers, they separate after 4 months but try to make it work for a year (with lots of fighting and crying a la 16 & Pregnant) before they actually get divorced.

Sheesh, pessimist much?  That sounded way worse than intended.  My bad.

  • I'm going to go with a year and 6 months.  That's long enough for her to have the baby and have him walkaway without feeling too much like a scumbag.

    Seriously...what are your/her parents saying?

I'm guessing this will be a JOP wedding?

  • I don't know what her parents are saying/thinking.

I'm not close with our dad, but when we chatted with him a year ago the topic of my half-sister came up. That was when she was still engaged to the first guy, and she was 19 or 20.  He said that he raises an eyebrow at her behavior but that she's an adult living on her own and he just sits back and lets her make her decisions.  Someone (me or my sister) mentioned that it's a bad idea for her to have so many pictures of her drinking online since she's underaged and future employers might see it, but he just shrugged.

I'm not sure where her mom lives, but I think she is elsewhere (they're divorced).  I know my half-sister sees my dad regularly but I guess he's taking a very hands-off approach to parenting.

Alicia - yeah, it's at the courthouse, dinner at Applebee's after.

oh fudge cakes....how many people will be there?

Can't they at least spring for a nice restaurant?  I guess you can't really beat the 2 for $20 wedding reception special at Applebees.

So far, 20 people have RSVPd yes to the Facebook event.  I don't think the couple is picking up the tab, though.  I don't know if they really thought it through - they really should have picked somewhere where they can reserve a room, at least.  You can't just have 20 people show up somewhere.

Edit: I just checked, it's actually 15 who are attending, 7 maybes, and 40 haven't responded.  She also posted it on her wall, so you can view it without being invited.

  • I'll probably delete this later, but here is a pic with his hand on her belly...looks like he's being a little protective of an unborn child, no???

(I know, I'm reaching.  But it DOES look like the way a couple poses in pregnant belly pics!!)

Ha!  I'm glad I'm not the only one!

Not that I think she looks pregnant.  It's probably just a weird shot, like someone snapped it as he was moving his hand to/from her waist, but it totally looks like he's holding her belly to me.

  • Yes to the pic. She is PG! I know it. Normal people like me say  "husband, do not touch or look near my stomach in this photo to draw attention to my fat rolls. Thank you sir, good day." Don't they?

Damn you Misty, I wanted to be 4 months. I guess I will take 5. Can I do 4.5?

Of course.  Maybe I should set up some kind of website or Google calendar or something.  Winner gets..ummm...I don't know.  I have a coffee grinder I'm not using.

  • So, I was thinking about sending her a card..would it be rude not to put a check/gift card in it?  I know it's horrible of me, but I just don't see the point in giving them a gift, and if she hadn't FB friended me I wouldn't even know she was getting married.

  • LOL@the photo and baby speculations.

    hahahah

Laura...definitely give her wedding gift.  Might I suggest a gift certificate to Applebees???   It's a damned good gift to pay for part of  the couple's wedding reception!
