Does anyone make it a point to pay cash for all of their gas?
I brought it up to dh and he thought the difference wasn't always worth the lack of convenience. Just curious.
ps It stil pi$$es me off that they made the change. I get why but now it's the 'norm' and it use to not be.
Re: S/O Gas prices
Everything Wedding ♥ Persnickety Plates
There are a few places that still charge 'one price for all' and I make a point to frequent those gas stations if I can.
IMO it's a complete and utter ripoff that they charge different prices depending on your method of payment. Just another way for them to make $$$.
And I have a feeling the higher prices are because of all the talk about eliminating subsidies.
Def NOT Mobile - there are two by my work and there is at least a $0.10 difference between cash & credit
I usually just pay with a card, but this week I happen to have cash so I will use that. I rarely have cash on me, and next to never have enough to buy an entire tank of gas (at least with the costs right now)
I'm with you though on how irritating it is that it's now the norm to charge more just because you are using a credit card.
for easy math... let's say gas is $3/gal for credit and $2.90 for cash
I get 5% cash back on my AmEx
So $3 gal x 5% = 15c per gallon.
15c /gal discount is > 10c / gal discount
suck it gas stations
and amex is the worst % for them too. you really are sticking it to them. good for you!
That is how we view it with our Discover card too, which is pretty much the only thing we use that card for other than groceries.
Of course your right, we try to make it a point to use those but they are just getting to be less and less and not as convenient. One we use to always use just changed over to two different prices this week, which prompted me to ask dh about it.
Me too. However, yes, I have been trying to keep cash on me lately specifically for paying for gas. I know it's only a dollar or two, but to me it's the principle.
I respectfully disagree.
) As a business owner, I see the amount of money that goes toward credit card fees, and it totally sucks. CCs charge a flat rate per transaction (for example, 25cents), plus a percentage of the amount charged (let's say 3%).....so for a $3 gallon of gas, the station could be paying 9 cents per gallon, plus the 25 cents. Totally makes sense for the cash price to be 10 cents cheaper per gallon.
I agree that it's annoying, but I can't blame the gas stations for trying to protect their profits a little with the 2 prices.
LOL we juuuuust got a rewards amex.
So what she said.
i understand what you are saying mara, but it's the price of doing business, and lets face it, the gas stations are doing pretty well for themselves.
what if EVERY store you shopped at started charging more for what you were buying if you used a credit card?
Yes and no. 98% of the time I get gas at Costco where cash is not accepted. The cost/gallon is about $0.05-$0.10 cheaper than "normal" gas stations in the area and they only accept debit or AMEX. I will either use either or. I also get cash back with amex so it works out for me. If I can't get to costco, I will take out cash and go to the station by the house
DH needs diesel so he only has a few stations that he goes to regularly that don't charge more for using plastic forms of payment.

Does anyone make a point to get gas at costco? I told DH we should start doing this but Costco isn't super close to us so it DH said it would probably cost $4 just to get there.
It seems it's always like .10 cheaper than the going rate.
I always get my gas from sams club where it's a little bit cheaper. They only accept credit, no cash & i always use my discover card so i get a % back on that.
I think i need to look into getting a amex though, i think they have a better cash back program.
I've often wondered about gas cards. are they treated as cash or credit?? Like if there is a gas station you always use (lets say speedway), you buy a gas card and then use it at the pump... do you pay the cash price or credit price?? i would think cash, but who knows.

Well you answered my question lol.
I wish I would use cash more often, because it seems like it would be significantly cheaper. However, I usually have DD with me when I'm putting gas in my car, and it's a bit of a pain to have to get her out of the seat, pay for the gas, and then put her back in the seat 5 seconds later. Totally lazy, but true. So, I just usually suck it up and pay with my card.
I do try to go to Costco for gas when I can.
I agree that it's the price of doing business and customers shouldn't be responsible for that cost. I get tired of hearing that excuse. I make a point to not shop at places that either don't take credit cards or require a minimum amount to use a credit card. It's an inconvenience for me to carry cash.
The place where I teach at (soon to be done with) just increased their lesson rates from $25 to $27....because of credit card fees (that was the reason they gave). I think it's ridiculous. And that increase certainly isn't going to the teachers.
They do.....they just build it into the price and charge everyone the same.
) I totally see both sides, I just thought it was worth mentioning.
If you don't accept CCs, people complain. If you accept CCs and charge more for it, people complain. If you raise your prices to build in the cost, people complain. Overall, the business owner can't win. You want to make it easy for the consumer, but the CC companies are raking you over the coals.
Regardless, it's something we all have to deal with. I totally agree that it's annoying, but I can empathize with them, that's all.
Also, I think it's worth differentiating between gas station profits and oil company profits. Some gas stations are doing very well, some aren't. Many stations have closed over the past few years as prices have skyrocketed. I think someone mentioned in a different post, but most of their profits actually come from the store portion (candy, pop, etc), not from gas.
Soooo.....who exactly do you think should pay for it? The owner of the music studio? What if the extra $2 per lesson makes it so that they're not profitable enough to stay open? You mentioned yourself that credit cards are a convenience for you....so shouldn't you be willing to pay for it?
If you order a pizza, you can either pick it up or pay for delivery, right? Would you expect them to deliver it for free just because it is more convenient for you?
I'm truly not trying to be a jerk, but the logic here doesn't quite make sense. If we, as consumers, are going to demand the convenience of paying credit for everything (in essence, forcing companies to route payment through a middle man), then we should be expected to pay for that convenience. The ATM is still there for you if you need it.
/rant
I use my AMEX too! The reasoning is the same as above. Also, now that DS is my car a majority of the time, I will never pay cash, because it's too much to have to drag him in and out of the car.
Yes, exactly. I do feel the owner of the studio should pay for it. I can say this with absolute certainty because I know of some of the shady things they do and they consistently screw over the customers. Without going into personal details, I can say that this increase in cost was completely unwarranted and was brought on because of their poor business practices.
In this case, it is irrelevant whether or not parents choose to pay for lessons with a credit card, cash or a check. Everyone has to pay for the lesson increase, so the ATM makes no difference.
ETA: And keep in mind that I did say credit card fees was the reason the store gave....which, again without going into details, does not mean that that's why they actually increased it (this I know for a fact). It is simply an excuse that they fell back on and that's what I get tired of seeing.
I'm really sorry to hear that.
( It kind of sounds like this is a different issue entirely.
I have a rewards Amex and that's pretty much my thoughts too- my rewards give me better savings than paying in cash. Not to mention, I don't like carrying large amounts of money, so I'm rarely going to have the $65 it takes to fill up!
I think it's stupid that gas stations charge extra for credit. Other states manage fine without doing this. Yes, it's a convenience and it costs the gas station more money, but this convenience helps bring in more customers. If a station was cash only, how many people would you think stop? So while the station is paying more in fees, I have to imagine the added business more than makes up for this.
