baby reflux?

Just in case Chance weren't making life interesting enough with a possible hip issue and life in general with a newborn, I think he may have some sort of reflux.  I notice it at night mostly because during the day I hold/wear him a lot, so he's upright after feedings.  At night, I want to go back to sleep, so lay him down in the PNP.  he grunts, burps, and makes spit up noises without there really being spit up and sounds like he's in a bit of pain (not really pain, but definitely not comfy!).  So I have to hold him for another 20-30 minutes.  Last night I stacked stuff under his mattress so he slept at an incline, and that helped a bit.  He has a hip check appt next week, so I'll mention it to the pediatrician for sure then, but until then, any words of advice?  William never had this issue, so I'm at a loss!

Re: baby reflux?

  • I have a nap nanny you can borrow to see if it helps. It keeps him at an incline while they sleep. It also fits in the PNP. Sorry I know that newborns are so difficult. That's why I've decided to just carry and then pass them off.  ;)

  • It does sound like reflux to me.  You are doing exactly what you are supposed to in regards to after feedings.  The more upright you can keep them, the better.  But, I would ask about meds.  Adam was great about getting us something for Natalie when she was a newborn and they helped tremendously.

  • Thanks ladies.  I may take you up on the Nap Nanny thing Angie.  This might explain why C likes the swing so much better than W ever did.  Keeps him more upright than laying on the floor next to us!  Makes me feel bad to leave him in there, but he likes it!  I'll ask Dr. AllHis about meds next week, and we'll suffer until then.

  • Both my kiddos had reflux- Ella's was silent and Brody's was more your "typical" reflux. Brody in particular had a lot of trouble at night especially and sounds like your little guy. He would gasp and choke all night long and just squirm around and be uncomfortable. Even the incline of the rock and play didn't do him much good. He was most comfy sleeping on my chest which meant I didn't get much sleep either! We started off on Zantac and didn't have much luck and then switched to Prevacid which has helped a lot. Hopefully you guys can get some relief soon! Hang in there Mama!

Just lurking here, but FWIW...the nap nanny is great for babies with reflux. However your comment about "it fits in the PNP" is slightly off. If you read any of the material that comes with it, or on the Nap Nanny website, it is considered safe for floor use only. Using inside a PNP or crib could cause injury. I wouldn't want your LO to get hurt from misuse....just passing along info. Good Luck Smile
