How many of you guys make actual 'big' plans? I can't think of a time my family did anything more than barbeque and I was kind of curious if anyone actually did any getting away or had a bit of a to-do. Where I use to live had a nice memorial type thing in a park that we would go to sometimes as well, oh and we would go to the cemetary too.
I was thinking about this because when we were picking a shower date I entertained the idea of the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend (I personally love a Saturday shower) but everyone was like "no you can't do that people make plans for that weekend'.
Re: Memorial Day Weekend
We're tearing apart our kitchen! Wooooooooooooooo!
I view it as more of a casual bbq at families, though.
We don't make big plans. This year we do but not normally.
But a lot of my family that has cottages and/or boats tend to go up north and open the cottage/put their docks in/get the boats in the water.
We don't usually have anything big planned. If we go back to Kalamazoo to see our parents, my mom's friend usually has a big BBQ that we would stop by at, but that's about it.
My Future Sister-In-Law is having her bridal shower on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, in Austin. I REALLY wanted to go, but we've got other things going on that need to be taken care of that weekend. So the shower on that day doesn't seem strange to me at all.

Matt always has 'up north man weekend'... all the guys from college fly back into town and they drink beer and do manly things.
Whatever.
I get to stay home and sleep
It has always just been a casual bbq weekend for us to. Maybe this year well get the keys to our house and we can start moving
Mommy's little helper
Usually we would go up to MIL's cottage on the lake for at least a few days of the weekend, and on Memorial Day itself we often have a casual bbq with my side of the family.
However, this year we have a wedding to go to (that DH is in) on Saturday of Memorial Weekend so we won't be heading up north this year!
We have had weddings for the last few years, so no big plans for us. Before that it would usually be a casual bbq, disc golf or a camping weekend.
This year we are not doing anything crazy besides enjoying a 4 day weekend, casual bbq and a lunch date with one of my favorite KU nesties
looking forward to planting flowers and a casual bbq with family. i may have a low key gathering to celebrate h's b-day.
i'm just looking forward to a 3-day weekend, which i may turn into 4!

My family has always had a cottage on the lake so we do that for long weekend (Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Labor Day) as well as many other times in the summer. My parents now live on a lake in the Midland area so DH and I go there frequently -- it's the cheapest vacation we can get!
P.S. I get frustrated by people who plan weddings, showers, etc. on the long weekends. I've never declined, but I have definitely complained about having to stay home to attend.
This year we're taking the fur babies to Frankenmuth for this http://dogfunfest.com/
I am so excited!
This is exactly why I was insistent on not having my baby shower on Labor Day weekend! We usually travel regardless, but I didn't want other people to feel like theyhad to stay home just to attend the shower.
We go camping with my family and aunt's family every weekend. And then when we are there we have a bit birthday celebration, because between the last two weeks in May and the first week in June five people who come camping have birthdays.
Although we probably wont be going this year. Even though DH has had Thursday through Saturday requested off work for quite some time, starting next Monday they have moved him to a new store, so he probably wont be able to have those days off any more. Im considering going camping without him...
And Monday we are having a BBQ/B-Day celebration at our house to celebrate DH's 29th. Should be fun!
