Memorial Day Weekend

How many of you guys make actual 'big' plans? I can't think of a time my family did anything more than barbeque and I was kind of curious if anyone actually did any getting away or had a bit of a to-do. Where I use to live had a nice memorial type thing in a park that we would go to sometimes as well, oh and we would go to the cemetary too.

I was thinking about this because when we were picking a shower date I entertained the idea of the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend (I personally love a Saturday shower) but everyone was like "no you can't do that people make plans for that weekend'.

Re: Memorial Day Weekend

  • We're tearing apart our kitchen! Wooooooooooooooo!

I view it as more of a casual bbq at families, though.

  • We don't make big plans. This year we do but not normally.

But a lot of my family that has cottages and/or boats tend to go up north and open the cottage/put their docks in/get the boats in the water.

  • We don't usually have anything big planned.  If we go back to Kalamazoo to see our parents, my mom's friend usually has a big BBQ that we would stop by at, but that's about it.

My Future Sister-In-Law is having her bridal shower on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, in Austin.  I REALLY wanted to go, but we've got other things going on that need to be taken care of that weekend.  So the shower on that day doesn't seem strange to me at all.

  • Matt always has 'up north man weekend'... all the guys from college fly back into town and they drink beer and do manly things.

    Whatever.

I get to stay home and sleep =)

  • This year we're flying to Florida to see my family, but usually we don't do anything special.

  • It has always just been a casual bbq weekend for us to.  Maybe this year well get the keys to our house and we can start moving :)

  • Usually we would go up to MIL's cottage on the lake for at least a few days of the weekend, and on Memorial Day itself we often have a casual bbq with my side of the family.

However, this year we have a wedding to go to (that DH is in) on Saturday of Memorial Weekend so we won't be heading up north this year!

  • We have a birthday party to attend - our friends daughters were born around Memorial Weekend & 4th of July so every year those two weekends are dedicated to their birthday party.  Depending on the weather we may not attend - I'm still not thrilled with the idea of wearing shorts right now.  haha!

  • Nothing for us. DH always has to work. Memorial weekend is my deadline for having the nursery area cleaned out so I'm hoping to start prepping for painting then.

  • We have had weddings for the last few years, so no big plans for us.  Before that it would usually be a casual bbq, disc golf or a camping weekend.

This year we are not doing anything crazy besides enjoying a 4 day weekend, casual bbq and a lunch date with one of my favorite KU nesties Wink

  • We rarely do anything, not even a family bbq.  Last year we had a wedding down in NC, and I think we're hanging out with a friend for her birthday this year.  I know a lot of people that go up north for the weekend.

  • looking forward to planting flowers and a casual bbq with family.  i may have a low key gathering to celebrate h's b-day.

i'm just looking forward to a 3-day weekend, which i may turn into 4! Wink

  • We never really plan anything special. If we happen to have or go to a bbq, that's cool. But we try not to plan anything.

  • We always used to go up north.
  • We go camping every year.  We've done this for as long as I've been with DH.  Normally we try to stick to either the west side of the state of somewhere in SE, we do not attempt to go up north because of the traffic.  this year we are going to Metamora-Hadley.

  • We usually just do a family bbq or go up north. I got married the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend last year, so I see no problem with having a shower that weekend! Big Smile
  • In the past, I have gone out of town to visit friends, but lately, I just stay local and enjoy the long weekend working around the house, BBQing, etc.  It seems like a lot of my friends go up north or something along those lines.

  • When I was younger my family was always up north at our cabin for Memorial Day weekend. This year we're having family over for a bbq and if the weather is right I kind of want to stain our fugly cement slab of a porch.

    Fourth Anniversary

My family has always had a cottage on the lake so we do that for long weekend (Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Labor Day) as well as many other times in the summer.  My parents now live on a lake in the Midland area so DH and I go there frequently -- it's the cheapest vacation we can get!

P.S.  I get frustrated by people who plan weddings, showers, etc. on the long weekends.  I've never declined, but I have definitely complained about having to stay home to attend.

  • We always go up North to the cottage, but this year we are going to a wedding in Vegas!!!

  • In years past, DH and I would take a trip up north to go golfing.  His birthday is 5/26 so it always falls around Memorial Day.  This year we are taking it easy and BBQ'ing because we just got back from vacation.

  • This year we're taking the fur babies to Frankenmuth for this http://dogfunfest.com/

I am so excited! Big Smile

  • DH's birthday is the 25th, so we may go out to dinner and get a date night.  My stepsister and her fam do Civil War Reenactment at Greenfield Village that weekend too, so we usually stop by and walk around since we're members there.

  • We always do something.  Usually we go up to Traverse City and run Bayshore, but last year my sister got married Memorial Day weekend and this year I'm going to NC to visit my sister.

This is exactly why I was insistent on not having my baby shower on Labor Day weekend!  We usually travel regardless, but I didn't want other people to feel like theyhad to stay home just to attend the shower.

  • We go camping with my family and aunt's family every weekend.  And then when we are there we have a bit birthday celebration, because between the last two weeks in May and the first week in June five people who come camping have birthdays.

Although we probably wont be going this year.  Even though DH has had Thursday through Saturday requested off work for quite some time, starting next Monday they have moved him to a new store, so he probably wont be able to have those days off any more.  Im considering going camping without him...

And Monday we are having a BBQ/B-Day celebration at our house to celebrate DH's 29th.  Should be fun!

  • Growing up we never did anything, maybe a BBQ.  Now we usually go up north for the weekend.  DH would never go to a wedding or shower on a holiday weekend.  He's already pissed that someone planned a party for the fourth of July, he doesn't want to give up his weekend up north.

  • We never went anywhere when I was growing up. Since I met DH, we try to go camping at one of the state parks. We just bought a camper and as soon as we picked it up, DH told me I needed to find a place for camping. We are just going to go to Proud Lake, which is practically around the corner from us. Couldn't go too far since DH has to travel to and from Indiana that weekend.
  • We usually head up north every holiday weekend. It's kind of a big thing because all of my family goes up there. It's a great time.
