Pawlenty is running for president too. lordy pete.
Well said.
The Twins are mighty embarrassing these days too.
The thing that gets me is the GOP claim "We just want to let the people decide." But they forget about a little principle called: "do we believe it's a good use of our states sacred constitution to ADD discrimination, hate, and TAKE AWAY rights?"
Our politicians have basically said yes, our constitution is worth defiling with hate and discrimination that goes against other core laws we have that do not allow discrimination based on sexual orientation.
I asked a friend of mine about what she's had to go through and she said it cost them $7,000 in various fees to get their life set up the way it is today. And even at THAT insane cost they are still so legally vulnerable. And she said another friend of hers is in a nasty, horrid fight for custody and none of it would exist if her friend was legally married. Instead each woman is claiming "the kids were my eggs" vs "I birthed the babies." So, so, so sad.
the part that bothers me most is that the people who want this amendment also speak about "smaller government" and wanting the government "out of my life". What, the government should only stay out of YOUR life, but they can feel free to meddle in everyone else's?
There's also the issue of the 2nd amendment...I've yet to hear one logical argument that is not based on God or the Bible, and they fail to understand that those can not be the basis for law!
You mean first amendment, right? I don't think there's a bible-based argument for or against guns...

you're right. pregnant brain fart/fat fingers as I was heading to the basement with the toddler. LOL.
I'm also curious. If the single tornado last year was a direct sign from God that the ELCA had made a huge mistake in allowing openly gay ministers...what does the fact that there's a huge multiple tornado producing storm going through after the amendment vote was approved mean?
I totally forgot about that. That's funny.

I completely agree.
I heard someone try to argue the other day that because there are tax implications that go along with marriage, it's entirely appropriate for it to be on the ballot. I still can't figure that logic out.

the problem with letting the "people" decide is that the "people" often vote with fear instead of morality. 250 years ago, the majority of the folks in this country had no problem with slavery, did not consider blacks to be humans, women and children were considered property, and many believe that it was their God given rights to exterminate the Native Americans and take their land.
agreed. and I have at least 3 people on my FB list that are in interracial marriages and will not see the irony in the fact that they are THRILLED they get to vote to deny marriage to gay couples. Yet, had people been allowed to vote on their marriages, it wouldn't have been allowed either.
That's been one of my points all along. H is black; I'm white. 45 years ago, our marriage would not have been legal in all states. Looking at that now, it's insanity. I'm embarrassed by this as a Minnesotan. I can only hope everyone else who feels this way will get out and vote in 2012.

I feel this way too. I know where my political contributions are going for 2012.
I may even get yard signs (I never get yard signs).
THIS! You want government in your life less, yet you decide that this amendment is necessary? It drives me insane to hear the GOP talk about these two things in one interview and not see the irony in it.
It is embarrassing to be a Minnesotan. I sent an email to my rep last week saying as much.
Agreed. I wish one of them would explain how they resolve the contradiction that doesn't involve the bible. Oh wait, they can't.
Am I the only one who thinks part of their push for this was to distract voters from the real issue - that they can't figure out how to compromise and come to an agreement on the budget?
Tired after a long morning of hiking and swimming.
I keep trying to type responses but I get so upset that my words get stuck and won't come out. This is so sad, frustrating, demoralizing, heartbreaking...on and on.
A friend posted an e-mail on Twitter yesterday that someone had sent to Representative Tony Cornish. It was an eloquently written well thought out e-mail urging Tony to vote no.
His response? "Give it a rest!"
NIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICE.
Oh FFS! Is Michelle Bachmann actually running for president? Good lord. Maybe the apocalypse HAS occurred....
And yes, I'm totally embarrased for our state right now. Ugh. Its so bad.
I pretty much ride the fence when it comes to political affiliation. I consider myself fiscally conservative but socially liberal, and I have voted for both GOP and DFL (and independent) candidates in the past.
The gay marriage ban thing is probably going to push me over the fence to the DFL side permanently. I hate the idea of higher taxes, etc. that will come with a DFL-run state, but I'm just so incredibly angry about the gay marriage issue that I can't support any of the GOP legislators who voted for the constitutional amendment. I personally believe gay marriages should be legal for so many reasons, but even for those people who don't think gay marriage is okay, I don't understand the need this constitutional amendment? The state of MN already has a law saying that a marriage must be between one man and one woman. The anti-gay-marriage people are already getting their way, even without this amendment!
There are so many other more pressing issues our government should be focusing on right now, I can't believe they're putting so much time/effort into the gay marriage ban. Why don't we concentrate on adding jobs or fixing health care or something more worthwhile?
Mr. Sammy Dog
Exactly!! They already have their wish granted....why the need to push it any more???????
I agree with you completely. Let's focus on things that actually are issues!!!!!!
I think they pushed the marriage issue because they want to divert voters from the issues on which they haven't lived up to their promises. It's perfect, really. They know they haven't been able to make significant steps towards improving the economy. They also know time is ticking for the election and our chance to vote them out. The marriage amendment will give them stronger support from the anti-gay people. Sure some republican and moderate voters will sway to the other side because they're angry about the amendment, but there are bound to be a good number that will fall for the argument that it's not the GOP'ers fault that nothing was accomplished because the democrats wouldn't work with them on the budget/economy/jobs.
Tired after a long morning of hiking and swimming.
That all makes my head hurt. Politics these days is all trickery and smoke & mirrors it seems. :-(
well, whether she actually runs or not is a moot point...she's an embarrassment just being a US Representative.
Oh, and I am trying to sit on my hands on a friend's FB status right now (because I REALLY don't have it in me to start sh!t today). She's one of the ones that's THRILLED she gets to vote to deny people the right to wed, but today she's celebrating 8 wonderful years of marriage with her husband. Who is not white, like she is. And yet, even if I pointed out that she's lucky they decided to NOT let the "people decide" in 1967, she still wouldn't see the irony in the fact that she can't wait to make that decision for others.
Laws can be declared unconstitutional in the courts. Constitutional amendments can't.
I think it's absolutely ridiculous that they'd even think it's a good idea to write discrimination into the constitiution, and I think it's just a distraction from the fact that they can't agree on a budget, but I get why they want the amendment rather than just rely on existing law.

Exactly the bolded part.
Re: Pawlenty. I don't like him because he's not telling the full truth. Sure - he didn't raise STATE taxes - but because of his inability to raise state revenues, local revenues were raised through property tax increases.
Although - he's not charasmatic enough to win, IMO. Anyone see his Iowa speech today? The clips I saw - no charm or state presence at all.
I might also consider a lawn sign or two. I'm fired up over the marriage amendment!!
