Re: anyone following the Casey Anthony trial today?

  • I am watching it right now and I was just coming over here to make a post about it.  LOL.

    The defense says:

    Caylee drowned in the pool

George Anthony disposed of the body

Both George Anthony and Lee Anthony raped Casey

I know, it was hard to see the part about the sexual abuse claims.  I am not discounting it, (although it seems weird that she would raise her kid in the same house AND not have a job trying to her and her kid the eff out of that environment.  Still seems fishy.

I didn't see the part about the sexual abuse. I read a sentence or two about it on the orlandosentinel website.

yeah that whole thing is shady.. but what does it have to do w/ Casey killing her?

I have a hard time buying into the "she was abused so she killed her daughter" defense.. bad things happen to people every day. they don't all turn into sociopathic murderers.

    http://lifeisbeachykeenblog.wordpress.com
  • Whoa, I haven't been following it but definitely sounds quite sensational! Especially the rape stuff, eek!
  • baez is focusing a lot on the body being moved. that's all he's talked about for the last 20 minutes.

I wish I had been watching since the beginning.

  • DAmn. Makes me wish I had more down time at work!
  • A little fun fact......Casey's BFF Annie Downing is someone who I grew up with.  I am sure at some point she will be on the stand.

Actually I was friends with her older sister, we played softball for about 10 years together.

The defense attorney is coming off a little disjointed to me - IMO, he keeps just throwing out theories but I'm not sure any of them have the legs to really work just yet. I'll be interested to follow the evidence.

He's got a mountain to climb, that's for sure. The prosecution's statement was pretty direct and straight forward, from what I saw. Casey is pretty reactive, too - she doesn't seem to have much (or any) courtroom demeanor coaching. I wonder what the jury makes of her.

A lot of what the defense is talking about will likely come back up in the penalty phase, assuming she gets to that point. Abuse as a child may not be an excuse for murder, but it could be a mitigating circumstance to sway the jury towards life instead of death. A lot of times in these cases, that's the best the defense can hope for. Sadly, I've worked a lot of cases on behalf of the defense where we considered it a "win" if the defendant just got life. It's a weird situation.

I'm rambling, but this is really interesting. I hope they keep showing the whole trial online - I'll watch the whole thing!

Keep rambling. I'm interested in your input.

I guess I would consider it a win as well if I was sentenced to life instead of death..although I might want to be dead if I was spending the rest of my life in jail.

I'm totally confused why they said she drown in the pool, but baez is talking about they don't have the cause of death..

It feels like he is just running around from one thing to the next.

I didn't get to see the prosecutors part.

I only saw the back end of the prosecutor's statement. She was very concise and to the point, IMO.

I think the drowning talk makes sense, from a defense standpoint. I mean, it's true they don't have the cause of death...but that could work to their advantage. They don't have to prove she drowned, they just have to give the jury enough reasonable doubt to stand in the way of a conviction. If the jury starts thinking, "well, we don't know for sure how she died, so maybe she could have drowned..." there's your reasonable doubt. I'm not sure how he'll explain away the duck tape on her mouth (if he already did, I must've missed that part), but he just needs to get the seeds of doubt in there.

I did have trouble following him, though. It seemed like he was trying to cast doubt any which way he could, and was trying all angles. It makes me wonder if they did any pretrial research (like focus groups/mock trials), which could have helped him narrow his focus to the most effective points. Or, maybe he just decided to try to get everything out there at once.

Hopefully the evidence will tie it all together!

  • I guess I don't understand how drowning isn't the cause of death.

  • Where is the link to the live trial? I was seeing some twitter feed on it this morning, but that was it.

     And Jena, who is Baez?

  • They are asking George Anthony about the sexual assault of Casey...he denied.

    Casey is shaking her head...

they also asked if he was home when Caylee drown. he said no..which conflicts with what I read in the paper earlier.

  • This whole drowning hypothesis just doesn't add up.  How does an accidental death get to this?  People don't try this hard to hide the evidence of accidents.  If there was no guilt here, I think the truth would have come out.  Somebody has something to hide here.
  • I don't think I will be able to watch this whole trial.

I really don't understand why they are focusing on whether or not george anthony knew Casey was pregnant @ some wedding.

Are they trying to establish that George anthony is a liar?

  • Maybe I'm off here, but if I strangle you and then dump you in the pool, you didn't drown.  I strangled you.  So while the "drowning" may have been a cover up or a fact of the case, it doesn't mean she actually drown.

I agree that if you are strangled and then dumped in the pool it's not a drowning..

Caylee was never missing. On June 16, 2008, she drowned in the family swimming pool on Hopespring Drive, according to defense attorney Jose Baez.

I was just going off that sentence in the orlando sentinel.

    i think baez is fullofshit.

Was there physical evidence of water in her lungs?  I thought drowning was one of those causes of death that was usually pretty unambiguous.

wasn't she decomposed when found? would there have been lungs to examine?

I obviously don't know how far along in the decomp process she would have been when found.. but I never remember hearing anything about water being found in her lungs. Wouldn't they release that type of thing?

I seriously couldn't be on the jury of a case like this.

Yes, if I remember correctly from the prosecution's opening statement, she was too badly decomposed when they found her to determine COD. The only evidence on the body that it was foul play was the duck tape on her mouth (which obviously does not jive with the "accidental drowning" theory). Other than that, there's no way to know what happened. Since they can't say for sure how she died, I'm sure Baez is trying to sway it that they can't say for sure she was murdered.

I agree that it's way sketchy to go so far to cover up an accident. Unfortunately, it happens. You'd be shocked at the poor logic and reasoning that can go on in people's minds. (Well, maybe you wouldn't!)

I assume he was asking about knowing she was pregnant at the wedding just to make the jurors question what he says. Like, looking at that picture, there is no way to think she was just "retaining water" unless you are epically clueless. I'm sure the goal is to get jurors thinking "no way that's true" which then leads to "what else of his testimony isn't true?" It's a reach, but I assume that's what he's going for. Of course, this guy (the dad) also said he fell for a NIgerian bank scam, so it's possible he actually IS epically clueless.
