A Question about the Casey Anthony trial.

Ok, I will be the first to admit that I don't know exactly how the trial process goes but a witness can only be called to the stand once, right?

Well I am watching the trial through TruTv and they take a lot of commercial breaks and have a lot of commentary.  But did the defense even question George Anthony about the sex abuse claims?  I didn't see that they did.  It seems odd that they would make the accusations in the opening statements and never question him about it on the stand, right?  Did the defense blow it?  They seemed a little out of sorts when they were questioning him

Does this mean Casey Anthony will need to testify to explain the sex claims or will the defense not address these claims at all?

I am so confused!

Re: A Question about the Casey Anthony trial.

  • I would guess they didn't ask him, because they don't want him to say NO, I DID NOT SEXUAL ABUSE HER.  And then the jury will believe him.  Instead they want the jury to believe the defense attorney in his opening statement.
  • Yes they did ask him yesterday. Kathy, go to Orlandsentinel.com - you can watch the trial w/o commercial breaks. It's just straight feed until they go to recess.

I don't remember who asked G.Anthony about the sexual abuse, Baez maybe, but they did ask; and he denied.

  • The whole questioning of George Anthony was freakin' painful. They questioned him for 10 minutes about whether or not he knew Casey was pregnant, and when he found out...

He had said something about what Caylee was wearing the last time he saw her. Then later Baez brought that back up and questioned him about what his wife (Cindy) was wearing that same day. Then he asked what Cindy was wearing the next day.. The clothing questioning went on for a while. It was bizarre.

I don't know about calling a witness twice in the same phase of trial, but I think moonstone has it right. The prosecution asked about the sexual abuse, and he denied it. It doesn't help the defense case much if they ask him and he just denies it, so they're better off not asking. I wonder if Casey will take the stand? It's probably a terrible idea, but I'm not sure how else they'll get the abuse stuff in.

I would imagine he could (and will) be called to testify again during the penalty phase, but I don't expect he would be called again during the sentencing phase.

I saw that the State questioned him but I was waiting for the defense to grill him and ask him about specific instances.

IDK, as a juror I would see the lack of defense questioning as a BIG red flag that this is once of C.A. crazy stories.

But then again, I am no trial expert.  Like moonstone said, there was probably some strategy there.

  • I read a recap that said he denied those claims. I will find what I read hold on.

  • I find it so crazy that they can remember exact details from June of 2008. Nearly 3 yrs ago and they can remember the number of times they've seen Caylee and other things I don't think I would remember.

I know.  On one hand I don't see how she could take the stand.  She would get RIPPED apart by the State.  But then how would they explain the abuse claims?

Ahh, I still think this will be an easy decision for the jury.

I know they can't/won't mention about why she still remained silent after she was arrested (because she has the right to remain silent) but a normal person would have totally come clean and told the detective that Caylee drowned and she hid the body.  I know this girl is not "normal" but at some point she would have come clean if that truly is the story.

  • Oh and I still want to know how Caylee got into the woods and how the Meter Reader got ahold of the body according to the defenses story.  That's another line of questioning I was hoping the defense would ask George Anthony.

Yeah, I can see that. But it would also look awful if they kept asking him about specifics, and he just kept denying it. They're not going to get him to crack and admit to it, so why have him keep denying it in front of the jury and drilling that into their minds? There's nothing to be gained by having him repeatedly say "no, I did not abuse her."

That's why I wonder if they're planning to have her testify. Otherwise, I can't imagine how they're going to get this sexual abuse stuff out there. It will still be her word against his, but let's face it, even if it's true, the guy is not going to sit on the stand and be like "yeah, I molested her, so what?"

(For the record, I also think the defense has been a mess so far, although I can guess as to the strategy they're going for. This is in no way me saying that I think the defense has been effective.)

  • I have been purposefully ignoring the news about this. I had no idea about the sexual abuse, that's nutty.

Oh my gosh... if she takes the stand.... this will be amazing.  The prosecution will have a field day with her.  I can't imagine why she would, but you are right, that is the only way to get the sexual abuse in there.

I just saw on twitter "#CaseyAnthony trial: Cindy crying on elevator, leaning on George. Saying she hopes she doesn't have to take the stand today. Watch on #HLN."

This makes sense, if they didn't ask him - We are mostly cable-less, so I haven't watched the trail.  Don't ask a question that you don't already know the answer, or that you can't make a connection with (If A, Then B, If B, then C.), YKWIM?

Every time I see her; I think, "ew"  I was thinking maybe her defense team doesn't want her to get a hair cut bc then it would seem like she is worried about her appearance more than what is going on around her.

I know. I'm horribly mean. I'm watching the trial; yesterday her hair was in a bun, but today it's in a pony tail and it's nearly to her butt.

I have also been surprised at how much of a mess she looks. I mean, you don't want to parade her in there looking like she's about to have Glamour Shots taken, but usually a little bit of effort into making the defendant look neat, put together and wholesome is par for the course.

Also, she started with her hair in a ponytail yesterday during the prosecution's statement, then put it in a bun before the defense. What's that about?

What was up with her cotton shirt yesterday?  I mean, they can afford to buy her some nice outfits for the trial.  The State is paying after all, duh.

She totally looks like she got an inmate haircut.  WTF is up with her bangs today?

Ha.  This really doesn't have much importance but I can't help but notice!

lol!  I know a certain trainwreck who is a natural brunette/fake blonde who has an active arrest warrant out.  I joke (behind her back of course, because to her face it's just.not.funny) that she should go back to her natural color before she gets caught and ends up with horrible roots in jail.  But that might be the only thing that will scare her strait is having to sport no makeup and horrible roots.  Now that is horrible :/

I am fascinated by this trial!  The defense was off the wall and I don't believe a word of it, but I'm so intrigued as to what evidence they will present.  Remember, in first degree murder all the defense has to do is prove the slightest trace of a doubt.

So I'm wondering, if she is not convicted of murder first degree, is she released?  Or is she charged on the spot with a different charge (second degree) and taken back into custody?

  • The State always charges the main charge (first degree murder here), plus all the lesser included charges (second degree, manslaughter, etc.).  When the jury gets the case, the verdict form will include the main charge and the lessers.  Then after they deliberate they'll decide if they want to return a guilty verdict for first degree, something lower, or nothing.  She only walks if she's acquitted of everything (which is hopefully doubtful).

Oh OK good!  That rings a bell now.  I just panicked there for a minute thinking about the possibilty of her being released because of this ridiculous defense.

I wish it was on tv and not just on the internet so I could watch and nest at the same time!

Yes - he was trying to paint her as a jealous person of Casey.

I would feel like I was on trial even being a witness in something like this.
