Ringy's baby name post and her saying that Arthur could become Jeremy reminded me of this poll I saw floating around the Nest a while back; could be fun.
What were you almost named? Any funny stories about your potential names or your real one?
Re: s/o Names (Poll)
I was born 3 months early so my parents weren't quite ready with the names. I went for a week has baby lastname. They almost names, Roxanne (called Roxy) EEK. Zoe, which I like. Elizabeth. Not bad but my family would have never called me that. I would have been Liz, Betty or some nickname. So my parents went with Eva. My Mom has hated her whole life that she goes by a shortened version of her name. She wanted me to go by my whole name. It didn't always work, My dad and my brother still shorten it to Eve.
I don't really have any funny stories about my name, except that my parents named me Adriane because my maiden name is so common in Hong Kong that they figured they should at least give me a first name that would put me alphabetically near the top.
It worked. I get butt phoned all the time.
My brother was almost given a different Chinese name after some actor, but then the actor committed suicide so they took it off the table (didn't want bad karma I guess). His English name is Kevin which they gave him because it's not very common in Hong Kong; no one can pronounce it properly. Little did they know how common it would be over here in Canada! My brother

My dad wanted to name me Xochil (pronounced so-cheel; pretty name, but it wouldn't have worked in SE MI!). My mom wanted to name me Diana or Victoria. My dad was in the States when I was born, so my mom told him I'd been named Victoria (his absence meant she had veto power, and can I add that she initially named me after Victoria Principal from Dallas?).
Between the time I was born and we joined my dad in the States, my grandmother suggested Susana and my mom went with it. Everyone in San Diego called me Victoria at first. My mom had to correct them for a few weeks before they got the hang of it and started to call me Susi.
My mom and dad wanted to name me Michelle Lee. Lee being after my grandmothers middle name. My grandmother HATED it. She was honored they wanted to name after her in a way, but there was an actress Michelle Lee that my grandmother hated. She said she would never call me that.
So I became Kari Michelle. My parents wanted at least one short name because I was already going to have to master a 10 letter polish last name!
I don't really have an interesting story behind my name, but I do know that if I had been born a boy, my name would have been Todd. I'm very glad I was a girl. Tobi is a much better name than Todd, IMO.
My nephew was supposed to be named Ezra, but when he was born, my SIL decided he didn't look like an Ezra, so they named him Josh instead. I'm so thankful they didn't name him Ezra. The poor kid would have been beaten up in school.
My first name was supposed to be Blair, but my dad couldn't get on board with it, so they switched it to my middle name. I love it, because I think it's more unique. I was debating using the same for our girl's name if we had one. I was actually named after crystal gayle (the singer from the '80s), so I'm not sure why they didn't go with gayle for a middle name, but oh well.
For the longest time when I was a child, I wanted my name to be Kelly and found things I signed with that name instead. No idea why. Even weirder was that the big sister of my neighbors across the street was Kelly differentspellingofmymaidenname. It was neat to see that there was an actual person out there with my ideal name.
I was orginally supposed to be named Shannon, because my dad wanted an Irish name. But when my Aunt passed away a couple months before I was born, my parents decided to name me after her.
My parents were going to name my brother Jamison, and call him Jamie for short. But when they told the nurse the name after he was born, she said "Oh what a beautiful name! My sister named my niece Jamie." They named him Michael, hoping no one would think he is a girl based on his name.

Snoopy - I love the name Blair.
Rayne779- My little brother is Jamie.
I was supposed to be David.
My parents thought they were having a boy. Andrea was the name of the receptionist at my mom's doctor's office!
We'll just not tell H about this little fact, m'kay?
My parents are kind of stupid when it comes to names. My mom loved the name Megan (after her favorite character in Little Women, Meg.) But both parents wanted to name me after my grandmothers, so I became Elizabeth Margaret (maternal and paternal grandmothers.)
WELL, they still really liked the name Megan so they just decided to call me that anyway! So to my whole family and anyone who met me from the day I was born until when I went to law school, I am Megan. When I moved to Boston for law school, I decided I didn't want the confusion of "Well my name's Elizabeth but you can call me Megan" (wtf?!) anymore, especially as I was entering the legal profession. So I decided to drop Megan and just switch to Elizabeth. So everyone I've met since then calls me Elizabeth, including H and all the ILs. Let's just say joint-family gatherings are quite strange, with half the people calling me Megan and half of them calling me Elizabeth.
The kicker is - my mom has admitted she doesn't even like the name Megan anymore. Thanks for all the pointless years of questions and confusion throughout my formative years Mom!
My last name in MI was problem enough. Everyone thought it was pronounced ole! Xochil Ole? Ay.
And now no one can pronounce my new last name in D.C.! I feel your pain, Eva.
I was supposed to be Elizabeth. They changed my name to Alyson Jean at the last minute. The funny thing is my Dad has a cousin whose name is Jeannie. He found out after I was born that Jean is actually her middle name and that her first name is Alison. Why he didn't know this before, I have NO idea.
So, now there are two Alyson Jeans in the family.

my parents named me Barbett Anne after my mother Barbara Anne, and also my dad has a cousin named Barbett but I never meet her. If I was a boy though I would have been Chuck Norris.
As for a funny name story my mom was adament (Sp) the my older sister's name was going to be...are you ready for this? Brooke Faith Trigger Book last name they even took that name to the hospital with them. but ended up calling her Paula June after my mom's parents Paul Dean and Donna June.
My mom and dad had two boys and two girls. My dad got to name the boys (Stephen and Jason) and my mom got to name the girls (Irene and me, Shannon). Thank goodness for that because my dad was really rooting for me to be Naomi (eek!).
I big puffy heart my name, especially with my last name, which is why I didn't take H's last name.
I can't believe your "funny name story" isn't the fact that your parents would have named you Chuck Norris if you had been a boy!
I know! I mean you would have been named after Walker, Texas Ranger.
DH's mom had a child when she was in highschool. Her parents forced her to give the child up for adoption. She never knew what the child was named, only that it was a girl.
Turns out her parents named her Erin. DH is Aaron. Makes family functions a bit fun and you have to always clarify to his mom which one you're talking about.
Wow. That is super confusing.
I was a surprise girl too. My name was supposed to be Justin Lee. After the surprise of me being a girl my mom wanted to name me Brandilyn Rae (Bran-duh-lyn) not Brandy- Lyn).
My dad's boss had a daughter named Brandilyn and my mom really liked it. When my dad's boss found out that my parents had copied his daughters name he got all pissed and fired my dad.
On a side note - I hated my name for a long time, no one ever said Brandilyn right and I thought Rae was a boy name. It's grown on me over the years and I don't mind it now, although I still prefer to be called Brandi over Brandilyn.
I love Rae for a girls middle name. Actually my cat is Sienna Rae
DH and I couldn't agree on a name for her, so we looked at my list of names for hypothetical children.
Wow! I can't believe that your dad got fired over your name. Talk about a story!
Dup.
I know. I, too, am confused as to what was going through my mother's mind.
Wow, that's nuts. I've always liked the name Juliana for my potential hypothetical daughter, but my old boss's daughter was named that. We stay in touch quite regularly and hope to work together again, so I'd be a bit hesitant.
On another note, I know what you mean about the boy's name thing. A friend's grandma once told me that in her day, Tobi was a name for dogs and mules. Umm, thanks?
