Re: Vacation with the In-Laws

  • and you agreed to go because why?

    take your own vacay if you don't want to go.

    Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:
    Alison's book recommendations, favorite quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)

    Grinning and baring something would certainly make the vacation more interesting.  Be sure to tell us all about it.

    LOL!  Didn't catch it when multi-tasking - I think I'll leave it {wink}

     I have my own IL-vacation in a couple of months and can already feel the dread starting.  Not sure why we agree to these things!

    I've vacationed many times with the ILs.  I'm actually leaving for a vacation with them in 22 days.

    The key is don't spend too much together time.  Go off and do your own things.  I recommend doing stuff alone at night.  Believe me, by that point you'll need to get away from the madness.

    Also establish "your" area of the beach house.  That way you'll have an area to escape to should you get overwhelmed.

    This. I am leaving tomorrow for a week long vacation with the in laws. We have a separate room and our own car and we have dinner reservations 2 nights by ourselves and we will go and do some things on our own, as well as with the family

  • We vacationed last year with my MIL.  Both DH and I agreed that that will be a rare occurence from that point forward.  We took a sailboat cruise for 4 days, and the vacation was wonderful because we made as much time to ourselves as possible, but it was still not as relaxing as it would've been if we had gone by ourselves.  This year we're taking a week-long vacation by ourselves.  DH is going to Europe for 3 weeks with a student group he travels with (he's a teacher), and my mom is coming to visit for half of that time.  My MIL asked if she could come visit the other half of his trip, and I said no way.

  • Just do your best to go with the flow and enjoy yourself. I've done this trip MANY times (beach house with inlaws) and always manage to have fun. Even when they used to have a TINY house for a krillion people.

    You'll look like a bittch if you insist on a hotel or other accommodations.  There's just no way to do it without coming across as a PITA high maitenance inlaw.
