Biker in proper gear (orange/yellow/neon green- basically easy to see,  and a HELMET) biking in road properly= ok

Biker in jeans/dark t-shirt without helmet, leisurely biking in road= not ok

  • I just got word that a friend ( using term losely) just got engaged. I'm happy for both of them but also have the giggles on the inside b/c this is the girl who would never get married, could never have kids or be a mom, never date anyone with a kid. She is now engaged to be married to a man who has a 9-10yr old son which will make her a step mom. Never day never. Right?

WRT bikers on the road:  On Lakeshore Drive south of Grand Haven there is a bike path that runs pretty much all the way to Holland.  I used that path frequently for running while training for Riverbank and often saw bikers using the actual road vs. the path.  It was always the ones on road bikes (and wearing helmets) so I wonder if faster-moving bikers prefer to be on the actual road?

Yes. Road bikers would prefer to stay going at the same rate of speed (usually equal with cars) and don't like having to swerve or slow down to accomodate walkers/joggers/runners/kids.

We're walking the dog up to the park to watch a softball game after work.  I'm strangely excited.

  • On a semi-bike related note, we were in Madison this past weekend and I absolutely loved how bike friendly the city was.  I actually really love that city and it would probably be one I'd consider moving to if it ever worked out.

This particular biker was the only one on the whole road.  In a crowded situation, I get it but this guy... *shrug*.

JuliD, my friend lives in Madison and loves it.  He plays in a Gypsy Jazz band there, (usually at cool bars) and when I saw your FB post that you were Madison-bound, I asked him if they were playing.  They were not.  I can't wait to visit him there.  I imagine it's like the Portland, OR of the midwest.

  • I chipped a tooth yesterday.  I'm feeling personally insulted.

We just road this path for the first time a couple weekends ago. That path has horrible blind spots.  It has little sharp bends throughout length of the path.  A biker traveling at high rates of speed is much better sticking to the road. It is much safer for all path users.

    It's a great path, isn't it?

As a runner, I was appreciative of the bikers using the road.  I also didn't notice any blind spots, but then again running is much slower.  I'm guilty of headphone use and "zoning out" while running.Embarrassed

We loved it.  I packed a picnic lunch for us and then we walked around GH for awhile.  We'll definitely be back.

I think the blind spots were made from the overgrowth of plants right next to the path.  I bet if we rode the path in April or November it would be much better.

  • Wow, today is dragging.  I wish I was still at home...

My liver-back-area is sore.  I don't know if it's because of an actual issue or because I haven't had to sit in this seat for almost a month.

     - - -

I just heard on the radio about a biker who got a ticket for not using the bike lane because he had to go around a car that was parked in his way (in the bike lane.)  I guess he made a video of him crashing into things that were unlawfully in the bike lane.  I haven't seen it, but all this bike talk reminded me of it.

Hahaha - love that he made a video of this.
