Hello Ladies!
Thank you again for your advice last week. After a weekend of discussing, DH & I have decided to make the move! So we're headed your way! Thought I would officially introduce myself since you will all be seeing a lot more of me on this board.
I'm 32, DH & I have been married almost 2 years. We moved to LA last year from Minneapolis (where I'm from) for DH's job. I'm an avid traveler, am a Pilates instructor, and also teach wine tasting classes - so hopefully I can come in handy on this board ![]()
And now, a fun "Get To Know DFW" questionnaire - tell me what YOU love about where you live!
1. How long have you lived in the area?
2. What's your favorite Date-Night restaurant? (DH & I are adventurous and willing to drive....)
3. Tell me about your favorite place to visit for a day trip!
4. Favorite Brunch place
5. Best place to go shopping (antiques, clothes, whatever)
6. Best hidden secret of DFW that only the locals know about!
7. One thing you would change about DFW if you could.....
Can't wait to see what everyone comes up with!!!
Thanks - and feel free to ask ME any questions too ![]()
Re: Intro & A Fun Questionnaire!
2. What's your favorite Date-Night restaurant? (DH & I are adventurous and willing to drive....) We love Tillman's Roadhouse and Patrizio. Both have locations in the Dallas and the Fort Worth area. We visit the Fort Worth locations.
3. Tell me about your favorite place to visit for a day trip! We like to do different wineries in the area for a less-driving day trip but if we are driving a bit we like to go to Glen Rose and float the river or any of the area lakes. Burgers lake is kind of neat as it is man-made and the water is clear.
4. Favorite Brunch place - Blue Mesa in Fort Worth - there are also locations elsewhere in DFW.
5. Best place to go shopping (antiques, clothes, whatever) - Boutique - Dean Kingston, Mall-type thing - Probably Stonebriar Mall in Frisco
6. Best hidden secret of DFW that only the locals know about! You can drink beer in the streets of the Stockyards. It's the only place it is legal in Fort Worth to do so all the time. You can also ride horses in this area too and you have the right of way. Gotta love Texas.
7. One thing you would change about DFW if you could: I wish it was a little less spread out. Driving an hour or more to go visit a friend sometimes sucks, but then again it is a metro area.
1. How long have you lived in the area? I've lived in the area my entire life.
2. What's your favorite Date-Night restaurant? (DH & I are adventurous and willing to drive....) We really like to go to the Holy Grail in Plano. We like beer and its a fun pub to go to. We also like Urban Crust in downtown Plano.
3. Tell me about your favorite place to visit for a day trip! I like to go to Tyler to see the rose gardens when they bloom.
4. Favorite Brunch place I've never been, but I have heard that Blue Mesa has a really good brunch.
5. Best place to go shopping (antiques, clothes, whatever) I love shopping for antiques in downtown McKinney. They have a lot of cute little shops. For clothes, it just kind of depends on what you are looking for. :-)
6. Best hidden secret of DFW that only the locals know about! Hmm...I can't really think of anything.
7. One thing you would change about DFW if you could..... The terrible traffic. I hate it so much!

HI!! I think you will love the DFW area, I hear the vibe and weather is somewhat similar to LA (besides the 100 degree temps haha)
1. How long have you lived in the area? My whole life
2. What's your favorite Date-Night restaurant? (DH & I are adventurous and willing to drive....) Cheap: Spiral Diner; Medium: Gloria's; Expensive: Al Biernat's
3. Tell me about your favorite place to visit for a day trip! IDK, I have never been on a one day trip (if thats what you mean)....maybe my house
!!
4. Favorite Brunch place: Dream Cafe
5. Best place to go shopping (antiques, clothes, whatever): I don't shop much, but I guess Target would be my "go to" place
6. Best hidden secret of DFW that only the locals know about! ??? I dont know, AND IM A LOCAL
7. One thing you would change about DFW if you could.....In my fairy tale we would have a beach closer (and not a gross one like Galveston, think Miami or Key West type beach)
1. How long have you lived in the area? We live in Bedford. I have lived there about 2 years but I have lived in DFW since I was 3.
2. What's your favorite Date-Night restaurant? (DH & I are adventurous and willing to drive....) We don't have a "favorite" but DH and I love trying new Tex-Mex and BBQ places around town. We are learning the the more "hole-in-the-wall" the place is the better it is!
3. Tell me about your favorite place to visit for a day trip! Granbury
4. Favorite Brunch place Paris Coffee Shop
5. Best place to go shopping (antiques, clothes, whatever) not a big shopper so not the person to ask
6. Best hidden secret of DFW that only the locals know about! can't think of anything right now but I'm interested to hear what other's have to say
7. One thing you would change about DFW if you could.....The weather. It gets REALLY hot in the summer and the humidity is horrible some days.
1. How long have you lived in the area? All but three and a half years in Carson City, NV as a kid and my time in College Station at A&M.
2. What's your favorite Date-Night restaurant? (DH & I are adventurous and willing to drive....) My favorite date ever happened at a place called Sambucca. It's in Uptown in Dallas. Great food, and they have live bands most nights. We also love spending date nights in Southlake Town Center (close to the airport). They have a great assortment of restaurants and a great movie theater.
3. Tell me about your favorite place to visit for a day trip!
4. Favorite Brunch place We like the Cheesecake Factory and Blue Mesa. You order off the menu at CF but Blue Mesa has a great buffet. Breakfast items and then regular items (like fajitas and enchiladas).
5. Best place to go shopping (antiques, clothes, whatever) I love North Park for most everything. They have everything from Macy's to Neiman's. Again, I also like Southlake Town Center. It's open air shopping and they have some nice areas just to sit out and people watch.
6. Best hidden secret of DFW that only the locals know about! Hmmmm, well, I love burger joints. There's a small chain called "Burger House", mainly in the Dallas area. Love their fries and burgers. We also have a family hang out called the Dairy-ette. It's in Dallas at the intersection of Ferguson and Oates. They have homemade root beer, hand-dipped corny dogs, and they still use a tool from the 50s to cut the potatoes for their fries. Also, we love a place called Campisi's. The original restaurant is on Mockingbird in Dallas (a Burger House is right down the street). It started out as a little hole in the wall but now is quite big. It's actually called Campisi's Egyptian but they serve Italian.
7. One thing you would change about DFW if you could.....
Just the fact that I don't live in Dallas proper. It wouldn't be very conducive to where we work but I do wish that we lived a little closer. We are actually just south of Denton.
2. DH and I love this place called the Italian Bistro in Roanoke. We don't eat out much though.
3. Hmmmm..... Day trip. We don't really make day trips. But I recommend Austin! You could make it a day trip, but it would be better to stay the night.
4. Drawing a blank on this one. Man, I'm super helpful.
5. Northpark mall for shopping!
6. Hmmm. Again, I feel so super helpful. I have no idea. Which is sad, because I've lived here my whole life.
7. The fact that it's so spread out. It makes mass transit almost impossible. We have it, but it's pretty inefficient in comparison to big cities.
When are you moving? What area have you decided on? Welcome! Glad to have you!
Oh fun I never get to do post since I am usally working on house

Yes, as a new resident of Texas that'll take some getting used to! I don't know any different, though!
MissSpree - I have never heard of Turner Falls, I just tried googling them, but their website is vague...
Could you tell me more about it?
Welcome! I hope everything goes smoothly with the moving process! My name is Lacy. DH and I have been married since September but have dated for 10 1/2 years. We have a house in Haslet (outskirts of Fort Worth), two dogs, and a cat. I am a legal secretary and DH works in North Dakota in Oil & Gas business.
1. How long have you lived in the area?
I've lived here my whole life.

Chris and I really like to go to Salt Grass or Texas Roadhouse.

Hmm...we don't really ever do day trips anywhere. We really enjoy the Fort Worth Zoo though. We try to take our nieces, nephews, and my lil brother when we can.
4. Favorite Brunch place
I am rarely up for brunch. Pour House in Fort Worth has a pretty good brunch though.
5. Best place to go shopping (antiques, clothes, whatever)
I just go to the malls around here. Hulen Mall, Ridgmar Mall, NE Mall, and sometimes to Southlake Town Square.
6. Best hidden secret of DFW that only the locals know about!
No clue. There is McKinzies BBQ/check cashing/liquor store all in one in Fort Worth in a sketchy area that has AMAZING BBQ!
7. One thing you would change about DFW if you could.....
The traffic!
How was Los Vaqueros? Did you go to the one in the Stockyards? We are supposed to go there Friday night for the 1st time.
Oh boy - I don't know if I'm ready for that!!!! Being from Minnesota, I am definitely no stranger to bipolar weather, but I think CA has made me a wimp!
And I'm frightened of the humidity. I have naturally wavy/curly hair that has a tendency to explode in a puffball. LOL.
Good thing DH loves me for me....and not my hair
I LOVE seeing all of these responses!!!!!
We're not sure of exact dates yet, but it's looking like mid-July.
I'm hoping we can head out there beforehand to check out neighborhoods. The only time I've been to DFW was driving through it on a road trip from DC to LA like 10 years ago.
We're looking at Lakewood, Uptown, M Streets. And Grapevine! (I know it's a suburb, but we've heard they have a cute Main Street. And they have wineries, where I could possibly get a job....)
And thank you everyone for the warm welcome!!!
I really don't find it that humid here. I spent a lot of time on business in Arizona and really didn't see much of a difference. We have humid days but it seems most days are not really humid at all.
Well get ready to wear a pony tail pretty much everyday during the summer then
1. How long have you lived in the area? I've lived in Dallas for four years, but in Texas my whole life. I'm from West Texas.
2. What's your favorite Date-Night restaurant? (DH & I are adventurous and willing to drive....) We love La Duni. It's our favorite place to go. DH is half Nicaraguan and many of their dishes remind him of his mom's homemade meals. (Some of Gloria's dishes, too).
3. Tell me about your favorite place to visit for a day trip! We like to go into Dallas and go to the museums, etc.
4. Favorite Brunch place: Breadwinner's. Yum.
5. Best place to go shopping (antiques, clothes, whatever): I love Northpark mall. It's my favorite mall. There's also a place in East Dallas called The Shop. Love that place.
6. Best hidden secret of DFW that only the locals know about! Hmm... apparently I'm not in the know.
7. One thing you would change about DFW if you could..... Definitely the traffic.
I feel your pain regarding the humidity. West Texas is very dry. For the summer I usually wear my hair wavy or pull it up in a bun.
Los Vaqueros is one of our "go-to" places. I have eaten there for years. Love it. The strawberry margaritas are awesome! I also love the fast service and they have the guys that walk around to the tables and sing. They don't stop at every table but it's nice to have the music playing and it's all part of the feel. I just love it there.
And yes in the Stockyards.
1. How long have you lived in the area? In the Metro area, about 8 years. I lived about 1.5 hours North of here my entire life, though.
2. What's your favorite Date-Night restaurant? (DH & I are adventurous and willing to drive....) Hmm well we like LOTS of different things, but I'll pick one for the sake of the survey. We love Grimaldi's Pizza.
3. Tell me about your favorite place to visit for a day trip! Love every ounce of Fort Worth. Stockyards, TCU area, Botanical Gardens, museums, downtown, etc. Also love to go to Lake Texoma. Highport Marina has a cool restaurant on the water and its fun to watch the drunk people launch/load their boats on the weekend. Really, it is highly entertaining and the food/drinks/atmosphere are perfect for summer.
4. Favorite Brunch place: I'm sad to say that the last brunch I had was at least 10 years ago at Tanglewood on Lake Texoma. I need to do brunch, soon!
5. Best place to go shopping (antiques, clothes, whatever): Hrm, well I really like Willow Bend for a mall. It looks like everyone has covered retail/malls pretty well so I will throw in the McKinney trade days, and also a few hour drive to Canton trade days. It's a huge flea market and can be fun.
6. Best hidden secret of DFW that only the locals know about? Hmm..I think we are one big friendly and welcoming city. Not too many secrets!
7. One thing you would change about DFW if you could..... I would add REAL and functional public transportation. We have gotten better, but yeah.
You should try the BBQ place I mentioned below. (McKinzie's BBQ and Cut-Rate Liquor...LOL) It's off 121 and Riverside and sooooo yummy. Plus, because it is also a check cashing place you get quite a show of people that come in there while you eat!
Lakewood is a very nice area. I have a few friends there.
As for the humidity, my hair is wavy/curly too so in the summer I embrace it! Hahah
I work in Grapevine and it's a great town and it's fairly central to everything.

1. How long have you lived in the area? Moved here in 2008, lived in TX my whole life
2. What's your favorite Date-Night restaurant? (DH & I are adventurous and willing to drive....) We really like Mariano's - it's a tex-mex place, and the owner invented the frozen margarita machine. Although I'm not crazy about their ritas.
3. Tell me about your favorite place to visit for a day trip! We're lame and never do day trips... although I'm getting quite a list together from this post!
4. Favorite Brunch place Again, we're lame and don't do brunch.
5. Best place to go shopping (antiques, clothes, whatever) I like antique shopping, but not necessarily antique buying. There are a ton of cool places though... Forestwood Antique Mall, a few out east of town on 80, in Forney (one is called Eastfork Mall I think, and I forget the rest), and I just discovered one up in Plano right off 75.
6. Best hidden secret of DFW that only the locals know about! I'm not in the know....

4. Favorite Brunch place: Breadwinners
5. Best place to go shopping (antiques, clothes, whatever), for finding dicount stuff Horchow Finale, mall shopping would be Northpark but it's kind of far so I don't get to go as often as I like. I like a consignmnet store in north Dallas called Labels, really awesome highend designer stuff at good prices, regular markdowns.
6. Best hidden secret of DFW that only the locals know about! Don't know yet!
7. One thing you would change about DFW if you could..... wished things were a little closer, Austin was so small comparing to DFW so we are not used to this much driving.
YES! I take mine back.
This is what I would change.
My allergies are horrible. I don't know any different though, like I said. But I know a multitude of people who have said "I never had allergies until I moved to Texas."
