BR: My Birth Story

Hi everyone!  Thank you for all the warm wishes on Miles' arrival last week!  We are all doing great and settling in to being a family.  Miles is pretty awesome and I still can't believe he is here and we are parents!

I wanted to share how Miles arrived on June 10.  I can't say enough about how much I love my OB's office and GP Beaumont.  I had a really great pregnancy and delivery experience.  I was sad to leave the hospital because of the great nurses!

Sorry if this gets long...

Due date was June 9th.  I had a regularly scheduled doctor's appointment in the morning to check fluids and NST on the baby.  All was well with both, but my blood pressure was a little higher than it had been.  No surprise there with how much I had been stressing myself out at work for the whole last week prior.

The doctor came in and took my pressure again, checked me out (no progress from the last 3 weeks - 60% effaced and 1 CM) and said, I want you to go to the hospital for some blood work and further testing because of your blood pressure.  It wasn't crazy high by any means, but higher for me, so off we went.

I checked into L&D, and my favorite doctor was on call.  He had talked to the other doctor and said that my cervix was not looking favorable, blood pressure was up a bit...you are 40 weeks today and at the hospital.  How would you like to have the baby this weekend?  DH and I looked at each other and said, sure!  Given the no update progress wise and my blood pressure, they saw no point delaying the inevitable induction by the 16th (which would have been the latest they let me go).  DH then went home, got our bags and I got all hooked up to everything.  My blood pressure went down a few hours later, so that was good that it was nothing to be concerned about.

They started me on Cervidil at 4PM to "make my cervix more favorable".  This stuff is the devil. Literally.  Some people it has no effect, others, they get cramping.  Me, I had 12 hours of full on, non-stop menstrual cramping so bad I could not get comfortable.  I also started developing some awful lower back and butt pain and there was no position I could lay in that gave me any relief.  For 12 hours.  Ugh.  At 5AM they started me on Pitocin to induce contractions and get me dialating...which I did right away.  And let me say, the contractions were easier to deal with than the cramps on the other stuff.

My intense lower back pain did not go away and we were getting ready for many more hours of me literally walking around the room to relieve the pain because that was all that worked.  at around 9:15AM, the doctor came in to check on me and I was dialating and having regular timed contractions.  The doctor then said she was going to break my water and get this moving along given the pain I was having back wise.

This is where the story takes a fast turn!  The doctor broke my water then said, OK, you are bleeding.  This is not normal, but let's wait a minute to see if this stops.  If it doesn't, we will get you in for a c-section.  Ok, great.  This is when the panic started.  The bleeding did not stop at all, and before I knew it, there was about 10 more people in my room and the doctor said, we have to get you in for a c-section immediately.  Then started the tears.  I was freaking out about what was wrong, how the baby was, etc.  DH had went down the hall to grab a coffee while they broke my water and came down the hall to see people running in and out of my room. He came in and briefed and although I know now he was freaking out, he was so strong and the sanity I needed because I was completely bugging out.

From the point the decision  was made to do the c-section from the time of the incision, it was a 13 minute time window.  They literally ran me down the hallway to the OR and I kept hearing, general or epi and I knew that at that point if they were talking about putting me under general vs. timing for getting the epi going, it was pretty serious.  In my head, I kept thinking...this is the crap I see on TV.  How is this my life right now, I am having an emergency c-section.

Luckily, they got me on the table and the "candy man" got the epi in.  Man that thing was awesome...especially given the intense pain I was still having in my back and butt.  DH got into the room and a few minutes later, I heard the best sound ever...Miles' wail.  I was crying and laughing all at the same time and DH was too.  The OR staff kept commenting that this was the loudest baby they had in a long time.  We were so proud!  He is absolutely perfect and very strong.  His legs are forces to be reckoned with and he is already holding his head up when on his stomach.  I am so grateful he was such a strong baby with all the chaos of the delivery...he remained stable the entire time.

After they were done, the doctor explained that I probably would have ended up in a c-section anyways due to a couple of things:  Miles' cord was short and if I would have labored at all, he would have shown signs of distress.  He was also pretty high up due to the cord and would have had a long labor to get him down.  My placenta was small and they think that is what caused all my lower back pain and the eventual rupture when the water broke.

So, it was the scariest 15 minutes of my life, but all worth it.  The doctors and nurses were all so amazing the entire time.  I want to tell everyone to deliver at GP Beaumont!  Everyone was so caring and easy to talk to and helpful.

We are so happy to be home, healthy and happy.  I am loving being a mom and never thought I could love my DH more than I do, but I am truly falling in love with him all over again (sorry for getting sappy).  Seeing him take care of me, Miles and being a dad is so amazing.

We are working on posting pictures.  He is one freaking cute baby if I do say so myself!  He is a little peanut but eating like a linebacker.  I am sure he will chunk up before my eyes!   The furry kids all are doing great and seem to love having the new little one in the house.  The first night was a little rough for everyone, but things are more settled now and going great!

It was the placenta starting to rupture.  Glad I was in the hospital when the water broke, otherwise, it could have been more scary outside those walls!
