Re: Your Dream Backyard
Probably something like this...
...with the addition of a little outdoor kitchen (fire pit, grill, bar, surface to put out food and drinks) and lots of trees. I might even take away the grass, I'm fine with no lawn in favor of pretty plants and flowers and paver brick patios.
Well...in THAT case....
(Those are cab vines, although zinfandel would work too).
outdoor kitchen for sure
big deck
definitely have to be an area in the yard that is just grass. large expanse of grass. I wouldnt mind a pool (inground pool - not too large)
playground area on the side for kids. (but shouldnt ruin my lovely landscaping)
a vegetable garden.
While we are not in our dream house, that would involve acreage, we are making the most out of this house and yard.
Slowly all of these things will happen:
We'd be happy in this house for a long time once this is all done.
**** Why did I add bullets if they don't show up. Stupid Nest
Infinity pool, jacuzzi, tennis court, and enough space for outdoor parties of 50+ guests
My dream backyard for my house (as opposed to dream backyard anywhere): lawn, a multi-level wood deck and stone/concrete patio with a fire pit, a couple place(s) to sit/eat -- one with canvas or arbor-style shading, and most importantly a seamless indoor/outdoor connection with the back of the house (i.e. lots of doors/windows) A few images:
Citrus trees & roses
Fire pit
Hot tub
BBQ & outdoor dining area
Dog run
Grassy area big enough for a swing set or alternatively, a tree swing
Small herb/veggie garden
Mine:
FLAT, large (1/2 acre lot would be awesome) shade for sitting in, sun for garden, open area for kids to play ball

You want this in someplace other than the DC area though, right? I really wish now that we had bought a house with a screened in porch. We redid our back yard last year and it's great, but from June to September I can't sit out there without being covered in bites.
Our current plans for our backyard are:
A nice deck off the upstairs, that is waterproof underneath for winter BBQing.
Privacy hedges to block our boat from the view of the house
A new fence
Stone lined raised flower beds (ok, we probably will do cedar lined for cost reasons)
A large decorative patio with a firepit
Nice size garden
Shed
Nice, level yard full of grass
Badminton area
If I were rich, I'd add a pool that equation.
You're thinking small. Plant some mature trees! Install some overhead fountains! Knock out some walls!
There is a good chance we'll be getting doors like these, as well as the wood deck.
Ha, well in my dream backyard there are no mosquitoes!
A gardener, so I didn't have to take care of it.
A pool large and deep enough for lap swimming.
A solid, high fence so my dog could run.
A catio.
A veggie/fruit garden I don't have to take care of.
A big grill and outdoor kitchen setup.
A coffee can to shoot at.
No snakes.

LOL. I was varsity in high school.
Yes, we had a badminton team.
And, yes, it was all nerds who didn't make the tennis team.
Our average GPA was above 4.0. LMFAO.
This looks amazing to me:
beach. I don't need a backyard
I will covet them from afar! There's a good chance Mr. Intended would itch from imagined bug bites just looking at the picture. I will still try, though. : )
That's my hobo camp.
I'd spend hours in there with my kindle and eat cherries.
*sigh*
I'd have to leave Southern California to get my backyard dreams fulfilled because my hobo tent would look like this here:
some of these elements:
outdoor living patio/kitchen area
fire pit
rooftop stargazing deck
pool with great mountain views, nice spanish fountain
lots of acreage and privacy fence/secluded, area for dogs to run
garden for veggies
a little of this

My husband would want:
- A basketball court (with lights)
- A pool and hot tub
I would like:
- Patio or deck with lots of room for tables and chairs
- Outdoor kitchen with huge grill and a smoker
- Garden (far away from basketball court) with small romantic sitting area
- Upper deck with stairs leading down to the patio/deck (assuming multi floor home)
Even though SoCal doesn't have the forested goodness of my backyard dreams, it does have minimal mosquitoes. Michigan had some beautiful greenery, but if you were outside near a body of water in the evening, you'd be sorry.
Here are pics of my dream SoCal backyard. lol
I want a fire pit like this
But at a coffee table height...and the fire portion could be covered so when it is summer, and not in use, it is just a table...ahhh...someday...
Oh.
I didn't see the part about assuming the backyard was in SoCal in the OP.
I was just in such a rush to post my backyard movie screen and hobo tent.
