How does a grown man not know these things?

Last night, we were making chicken fajitas. I was cutting the peppers, onions, mushrooms and asked Robin to do the chicken. I look over and he's cutting the chicken on a wooden cutting board. Tongue Tied Bless him. How do you make it to 30 and not know that's a no-no? Also, we've lived together for over 3 years. How many times has he done that and I just haven't caught it?

Has your H done anything lately that made you think "how does a grown man not know this?!"

Re: How does a grown man not know these things?

  • When J & his dad were done painting the baby's room, they decided that my kitchen sink was the perfect place to soak/wash the used paint brushes. Tongue Tied I also know that they didn't clean the sink out well enough afterwards b/c I saw a few pink "dots" on my nice stainless steel sink.

I love that J will wash the kitchen floor but I had to explain to him that the best place to dump the used water/lysol from the bucket was the toilet and not the bathroom sink (which has a small drain w/ a stopper). I guess the fact that the sink backed-up when he did it was enough for him to realize that wasn't the best place to empty it.

  • anytime Scott tries to "help" me by sorting laundry.  He tends to think that all like clothing goes in the same loads.  Like any shirt, no matter the color or fabric, goes in one load.  And my underwear has it's own pile (again, no matter the color).  Makes me shake my head every time.  And his arguement is always the same "but all the jeans usually go in a pile together, why not other things?"

Chris does this, and would continue to do so if I allowed him to do laundry...

  • Well...the wood cutting board isn't technically a no-no. The straight dope. But on the other hand, at least he was cutting the chicken - Jimi never cuts/trims meat, except for once and I have no idea what he cut it on, just that he it wasn't on a cutting board.

There been quite a few things that H has done that I'm just like...really? But I can't think of anything specific just yet.

  • I always say how glen is almost helpful. He will load large pots and pans in the dishwasher, on top of a ton of other stuff. The result? The dishes don't get clean! When will be learn to hand wash the very large kitchen items?

Oh, this make me feel better. I've always heard no meat on wood, but I guess the wood they use have improved over the years. In the future, we're sticking with plastic though.

Re: laundry. Robin knows how to sort laundry. He just doen't know how to iron. Surprise He would go to work in wrinkled clothes, if I'd let him.

  • when Andy and i started living together there were two things that i did that FASCINATED him:

    - separated egg whites from egg yolks (you have to do that for recipes?!?!)

    - turning the flat sheet upside down when making a bed so when you fold it over the comforter/duvet the pattern/embroidery is right side up.

    Ironing?  What's ironing? ;p

Confession -- we own an iron, but I don't have an ironing board.  And I can count on one hand how many times I've had to use my iron.  Ooops.

The only reason I own an iron is to make iron on t-shirts...which I've done once.

  • kristen- what about Glen and the cast iron skillet incident? haha.

  • I don't buy clothes that need to be ironed.  I hate it.  The only time my iron getsused is if scott needs to iron his dress shirts (once in a blue moon) or if I need to hem my pants.  That's pretty much it...

Omg! I forgot! Ok, this is a good one! Adding olive oil to. Very, very hot cast iron skillet, having it burn up in flames, then trying to put it in the kitchen sink under water resulting in even bigger flames. *smacks head against wall*
  • Oh Josh has done plenty of things that confuse me! I can't think of specifics right now but most of the strange things he does are because he's trying to do something faster or easier and not necessarily the right way:/
  • imagesteeser03:
kristen- what about Glen and the cast iron skillet incident? haha.

haha. We had one of these too. Rusted my grandmother's iron skillet. ::shakes head:: At least, he was washing dishes. I guess.

  • My husband is pretty good about cooking and cleaning things.  However, today he was weeding and ripped up actual plants he thought were weeds. Sigh.

My bio dad was a bachelor for many years after my parents divorced.  There were many things he did not know.  He thought you did not need to wash towels because you use them when you are clean.  He used dish soap in the washer machine.  His cooking skills were limited to hot dogs and macaroni and cheese.

Oh no!!!! I hope it wasn't ruined. Glen puts my pizza stone in the sink all the time. Drives me crazy.
  • Jay also falls in the category of "almost" helpful. He's loaded the dishwasher with liquid dish soap, he's shrunk more of my shirts in the dryer than I can count, and he never has any idea where anything goes no matter how long we have lived somewhere so he's suck at helping to tidy up or put away dishes.

Also, my 4 year old niece and nephew fold clothes better than he does Tongue Tied

  • oooh, and Scott *can't* put away tupperware.  Like he doesn't grasp that the lids stick together.  Or that smaller pieces go inside bigger ones.  We have some tupperware that are the same shape, same like surface area, but some are deeper than others.  He'll put the deeper ones on top of the shallow ones, etc.  Like he really can't understand these complex concepts of tupperware.  When he empties the dishwasher, he just leaves the tupperware on the table because he "can't do it"

Oh this too. We were emptying the dishwasher the other day and he said "where does this (colander) go?" We have lived here for a year and a half.

OMG, J is the same way !! He either just throws/stuffs them in the cabinet (and complains when they all fall out) or just leaves them on the counter for me to "deal with". He tried to tell me that we should just throw them all away since they take up "so much room" but if they were actually organized properly, they wouldn't take up much room at all.

  • all of you people who complain about your husband not knowing where things go....

when we moved in to our house, andy took HOURS to decide what belonged where and designated everything a particular spot. and not just plates go here, cups go there, etc.

he traced EACH plate and cup and different size bowl into the contact paper on the shelf so that i knew where it belonged and wrote a little description.

    mmhmm mmhmm. its annoying.

the contact paper is gone now (thankfully) but everything still has a "spot".

  • Danny also falls into the "almost" helpful category.

~He can't sort laundry and has shrunk my pants/clothes. However, if I sort them he can wash and dry them with no problem....he leaves the pile of clothes that need to line dried alone and NEVER folds clothes or puts them away. I finished the laundry LAST Thursday and his clean clothes are still in baskets on the floor in the bedroom.

~Also doesn't understand the point of tupperware or that dishes can be stacked.

~Has loaded the dishwasher with liquid dish soap.

~Has absolutely NO IDEA what Pledge is used for. With the way his mother is such a clean freak (the lady literally vacuums EVERY.single.day) you'd think he would have picked up some dusting spray in his life.

~He's lived here for 2 years and still doesn't know where things go. So he's no help when it comes time to tidy up. He just puts all the stuff he doesn't know where it goes in a pile at the bottom of the steps.

Not to defend him, but I buy these items for my job and I am food sanitation certified and while they suggest other materials they found that bacteria doesnt grow on wood like they once thought as long as its sanitized properly...

None of the men in our neighborhood do any of their own yard work, lawn mowing or maintenance on their homes. We do all of our own and I feel like every one of them come over for advice... How do you not become curious enough to figure out how to do these things on your own?

  • Clint does the laundry, we agreed on it early on and mostly it works great. But he has no clue what a "knit" is and what "woven" is. My rule is woven cotton never goes in the dryer- because it shrinks, and too often that means I can't wear that shirt anymore because it's too small. He can't figure it out. He's like, "I know knits go in the dryer and woven line dries, but how do you know? There's like no difference."  sigh. One's stretchy, one's not? Even on his own shirts, he thinks they're all the same type of fabric.

  • imagesteeser03:

    - turning the flat sheet upside down when making a bed so when you fold it over the comforter/duvet the pattern/embroidery is right side up.

This confused Clint too. But his mom makes the bed wrong so I think he's never known anything different.

I remember one other thing- he can NOT for the life of him figure out how to load the dishwasher. If there's one bowl on the bottom rack or something that's positioned so he can't fit something larger in there, he says, ok dishwasher's full, and hand washes the larger item. I walk over and move the bowl over, and voila, it fits. It's like a game of tetris, move stuff around and it'll all fit.

I also used to catch him putting wooden cutting boards in the dishwasher. Luckily that didn't last long.

If he empties the dishwasher, he leaves all the tupperware in a pile on the island. There's exactly one cabinet where all the tupperware goes, so I don't get why it's so hard! And our system isn't even very complicated, since we don't have all that much tupperware. I guess at least he puts the other stuff away (usually, sometimes everything's sitting out on the counter and only the flatware gets put away).

    This just made me lol.

I missed most of this, but love the post.  H is the king of putting the empty ice cube tray just laying in the sink.  a) I hate when he puts clean things in the dirty sink, and he doesn't grasp how dirty a sink can be sometimes, and b) just fill the damn tray!  One time he then complained when I filled the ice cube tray with non-filtered, plain old tap water.  Really!?!

He is however anal about how the dishwasher is loaded.  But, after 4 years in this house, he still doesn't know where we keep some things.
