Perhaps flameful: Pulling kids out of school for vacay
What is your opinion on this? (given the kid is not behind academically or anything like that)

Re: Perhaps flameful: Pulling kids out of school for vacay
yep.
So Tasty, So Yummy
I agree. Being married to a teacher though, this will never be an issue!
Older grades I would say it would depend on what tests, finals, etc. were coming up.
Pre-K, Kindergarten, 1st grade, etc. I have no problem.
We pulled Abbie out of Kindergarten to go to Disney World in 2009 because they were doing the birthday deal so we had to be there on her b-day.
She missed a Friday in 1st grade this year so she could go to Dallas with DH for the Cotton Bowl.
Both times her teachers said, it's no big deal, it's just a day or 2.

Agreed!
We have a fall trip planned, which will have K missing approx. 15 hours of instruction and we discussed it with the teacher who had no issues whatsoever. She said people often do it and she is glad to provide the work ahead of time so the child stays caught up.
Do it and enjoy your vacation
Oh, I'd have a HUGE problem with that as well. that's ridiculous.
Like Ayers, when the kids are younger, it's one thing....but I would NEVER compromise tests, finals, important project due dates.
I am surprised the district is willing to do that! (the administering of the tests early)
I think they are, though I am not sure what the rule is for kindergarten, as it's not mandated in the state of Texas.
Wow, that seems a bit extreme for elementary school! And for only 1 day?! Geesh! Pulling kids out was never a problem for me when I taught (for 6 yrs). I'd have a kid do it every so often, but it wasn't ever excessive, and if the kids could stay caught up, I was fine with it!
My mom tried to do the same when we were in high school - we were visiting family. Eventually, she just told them that we were sick! lol. She was irritated that she had to lie.
We were rarely pulled out of school, unless it was some sort of family emergency (funeral, etc.). I usually had perfect attendance! We did our trips during SB and summer.
not trying to be a witch or anything- as I told a student to go on a disney cruise for her birthday (the last week of school-- grades were already turned in, etc), but we (schools) get paid by the government based on attendance. i know 15 hours isn't much- and it's "just one student" but if it became a trend, I'm just sayin' the $ from the government now already sucks... we need all we can get.
I have no problem with it, especially with younger/elementary-age kids UNLESS the child is struggling in school. If that were the case I wouldn't pull them out for a vacation. But as long as the kids are caught up on schoolwork I don't think it's a big deal. I doubt that missing a few days of elementary school will really make a big difference.
We're booked on a Disney cruise out of Galveston in 2012. My kids won't be in school yet but my niece will be in 1st grade and my nephew in 4th. My sister already talked to the school about it and it won't be a problem.
Ditto!
This is another good point
Would consider doing it IF:
*it were in the younger grades. Probably not older than 5th.
*it was at least a SOMEWHAT educational vacation...Europe or something. Definiately NOT for a trip like Disney or to play at the beach.
*my child had had good grades, attendance, participation while at school and would not miss anything "major".
Otherwise, I agree...thats what summer/spring break is for.
